Rauner says he talked to Trump

Wednesday, Nov 16, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* I’m told that VP-elect Pence was also on this call…

From what I’ve gathered it was a positive conservation, with Pence asking Rauner about all those Daniel Biss super PAC ads attacking him on Chicago TV that paired him up with Trump.

Considering the “blue” nature of Illinois, they reportedly said they understood Rauner’s predicament during the presidential race.

Well now I can sleep peacefully this evening.

  2. - ILGOV2018 - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 11:24 am:

Maybe his is going to get a Cabinet position? Oh, no, wait, he never mentioned Trump by name, only, ” I support the nominee”. We can only hope he is on a short list for a Cabinet position or Ambassador to somewhere.

  3. - Anon221 - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 11:24 am:

So… Rauner “earns” a patch for his biker vest as a victim of political “meanness”???

  4. - ILGOV2018 - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 11:26 am:

Given VP-Elect Pence’s current situation with “e-mails”, can we really believe Rauner spoke with Trump? After all, he never really spoke to Madigan and Cullerton after he won his race, right?

  5. - doofusguy - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 11:30 am:

please please please say he’s on the shortlist to be the next HHS Secretary!

  6. - Stark - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 11:35 am:

Close allies in the administration? This administration’s transition team is a chaotic joke, and the names floated for cabinet positions are neo-conservative folks whose ideas have failed over and over. Yeah, great company Bruce. /s

  7. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 11:35 am:

I wonder if Governor Rauner is going to support President Trump’s reversal of DACA and get on board with mass deportations, or if he’ll stand with the Mayor of his largest city? I suspect Cardinal Cupich will have something to say to Governor Rauner on this topic too.

The man with no social agenda will soon be forced to choose sides. Maybe we’ll finally see the real Bruce Rauner.

  8. - Deft Wing - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 11:40 am:

Rauner played it perfect by “supporting the party’s nominee” but never mentioning Trump directly. And he wasn’t tagged at all in those dumb ads by Biss. Those were undoubtedly a big #BissMiss

  9. - Anon221 - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 11:44 am:

On 11-09-16, at the White House Press Briefing, Josh Earnest made the statement, “Adversity reveals character.” LOTS of character emerging from Trump Tower (our “new” white house). Rauner wants Illinois to be his version of “red”. He’ll have to play the national game now, and it won’t be “Because Madigan.”

  10. - Arsenal - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 11:45 am:

The “close allies” thing seems like puffery, since no one has any idea who’s going to be in the Trump Administration. Rauner doesn’t seem like Steve Bannon’s kinda guy, y’know?

  11. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 11:46 am:

Rauner can’t avoid the President of the United States…

Considering Clinton, Duckworth, and even Mendoza won statewide, Rauner’s closeness to Donald Trump will be scrutinized even more the next 18-24 months.

  12. - Rabid - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 11:48 am:

Yep they positively told him he wasn’t invited to yesterday’s republican govenors meeting with trump so sad

  13. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 11:51 am:

    ===yesterday’s republican govenors meeting===

Um, didja happen to notice that we’re in session this week?

  14. - A guy - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 12:05 pm:

Oy vey. There’s a lot of reasons Illinois and Chicago are still very important. Transportation, Air and Rail, Finance, we are home to a branch of the Federal Reserve, and Energy (Research facilities second most important to TX) among other things. Pence and Rauner are pals too.

Hope they had a good chat.

  15. - scott aster - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 12:22 pm:

So now we will be the “Blue State” competing for jobs with all the “right to work states” around us once MO & KY get on board with there new govs. Swell spot Mr Madigan for all your union buddies.

  16. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 12:24 pm:

BR: “So, how do you pronounce your name….”

Another one-sided account of Rauner’s famous “conversations.” Like all those Democratic legislators who tell him that they secretly support him.

Out of the national flood of campaign spots, Pence was really tuned into the Biss spots on Illinois TV when he was campaigning non-stop virtually everywhere in the country but Illinois?

Maybe he Tivoed it and is catching up.

  17. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 12:33 pm:

===Pence was really tuned into the Biss spots on Illinois TV when he was campaigning non-stop virtually everywhere in the country but Illinois===

Chicago TV is seen in many parts of Indiana. He was told about them by aides and pals.

    ===yesterday’s republican govenors meeting===

Um, didja happen to notice that we’re in session this week?

UM…did you notice he dedicated about 45 minutes to GA and he could have sent his cardboard cut out while he went to NGA meetin’

  19. - Huh? - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 12:54 pm:

Various news reports are saying that if you aren’t one of the 100%, dyed in the wool faithful, you are nothing to the Trump transition team.

Look at what has happened to Christie and others, pushed out by the family for slights real and imagined.

Trump has a thin skin and takes revenge when and wherever possible. 1.4% may claim they had a nice chat, but I think the tepid support xuring the campaign will backfire.

  20. - Wensicia - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 1:01 pm:

Trump understood Rauner’s inability to endorse him? Sure, and how many times will the future president be contacting Rauner in the next four years regarding anything? Zero.

  21. - A guy - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 1:03 pm:

    Huh, Huh?

Christie had other problems. Loyalty was his most endearing asset. He even left quietly. Given the spotlight on this transition, they don’t need any additional distractions like the ones connected to Christie were beginning to cause. The lobbyists were purged too. Mostly after they got their work done. This has been going on for months.

Defying gravity in so many ways…Christie will land on his feet. Don’t you worry.

  22. - A guy - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 1:05 pm:

    Wens,
You did see that Ted Cruz was interviewed yesterday, yeah? One might suggest his trespasses were greater than most. Illinois has some very strong people for administration openings. Many are from the outside, where Trump likes them. There will be people who make the cut.

  23. - A guy - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 1:06 pm:

    ===yesterday’s republican govenors meeting===

Anyone have an up to date roll call on this soiree?

  24. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 1:36 pm:

===Illinois has some very strong people for administration openings. Many are from the outside, where Trump likes them.===

    Example?

Englander is a tip-in, other than him… Example?

  25. - A guy - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 1:38 pm:

Pay attention to the financial community here.

  26. - Team Sleep - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 1:38 pm:

Wen - how many CURRENT officials (other than Congressmen in super safe districts) openly supported Trump? Not many. In fact quite a few GOP officials wanted him to quit mid-October.

Trump had to know he was going to lose Illinois and lose Illinois badly. Not sure what a full-blown Rauner endorsement and all that entailed would have done.

Trump came to Illinois a handful of times - most of which were just to raise cash and jet set outta here.

  27. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 1:52 pm:

===There will be people who make the cut.===

I sure hope you’re one of them. Trump could use A guy like you.

  28. - Downstate - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 1:57 pm:

VP from Indiana. House Speaker from Wisconsin. Chief of Staff from Wisconsin. Maybe Illinois has some “ins”.

From my perspective, I’m not sure Illinois gained that much from Obama in office. just saying.

  29. - Team Sleep - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 2:03 pm:

Downstate - the Midwest gave Trump the presidency.

  30. - A guy - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 2:20 pm:

==I sure hope you’re one of them. Trump could use A guy like you.==

And yet alas, I’ve not been invited to 5th Ave. to discuss being the undersecretary of anything. Perhaps Ambassador to Chicago.

  31. - Downstate - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 2:49 pm:

    Team Sleep,
Great point. Sure hope Trump’s gratitude bleeds over into Illinois.
From a purely political viewpoint, those states that are traditionally (and strongly) red or blue, don’t hold as much importance to a candidate. ie. Trump would have more interest the the economies of PA, OH, WI & MI before little (traditionally blue) Illinois.

  32. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Nov 16, 16 @ 4:49 pm:

–VP from Indiana. House Speaker from Wisconsin. Chief of Staff from Wisconsin. Maybe Illinois has some “ins”.–

I suspect we’ll continue as we and other Yankee states have for decades, regardless of party or administration: propping up those who can’t or won’t take care of themselves in Dixie and the West.

Here are the Top Ten states most dependent on the national government. Only one didn’t go yooge for Trump.

Maybe we should be more like our neighbors like Kentucky and Tennessee — where’s that welfare line?
