Republicans highlight Democrat’s call for term-limiting Madigan

Friday, Dec 16, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Rep. La Shawn Ford (D-Chicago) told reporters yesterday that he’d “most likely” be for term-limiting Speaker Madigan if that could lead to a compromise with Gov. Rauner on getting a budget

* The ILGOP pounced

Yesterday, Democrat Rep. La Shawn Ford indicated his support for term limits as means of compromising with Gov. Rauner to end the budget impasse.

Rep. Ford told CBS Chicago, “What do you think about term limits for someone like Mike Madigan? I mean, that’s a term limit. I would most likely be for that if we could figure out a way to make some compromises with the Governor to help the people that I represent.”

“It’s encouraging to see Democrats break away from Mike Madigan’s irrational opposition to any form of term limits and his unwillingness to compromise. Democrats and Republicans alike should work together to pass bipartisan reforms that the people of Illinois are demanding.” – Illinois Republican Party Spokesman Steven Yaffe

    I really do think house dems want to see Madigan go. They just don’t want to see him replaced with Drury.

    “I would…..most likely be for that.”

    TFW you know you just stepped in it.

    Man, oh man, term limits are a terrible idea.

    If term limits for leadership are so great, why don’t the minority leaders lead by example? I recall when Tom Cross first became minority leader, he promised a ten-year limit. That was quietly repealed a few years later.

    ==It’s encouraging to see Democrats break away.==

    How did the Party of “No!” become the Party of Hall Monitors?

  6. - Aldyth - Friday, Dec 16, 16 @ 10:18 am:

    How do you retroactively term limit someone? As I recall, if you put a law in place that creates a term limit, the clock starts then. Years already in the position don’t count.

    Given that term limits won’t come into play with Madigan until he’s in his mid-80’s, why not? Lol.

    Instead of commenting here I will call my state rep. and ask her to support Madigan for Speaker and vote NO on term limits.

    oh, wait, I thought Anon at 10:13 meant leaders who are minorities…..

    I suppose the answer is that they shouldn’t have to unilaterally disarm, though that would kinda give away the game in the first place.

    It has begun …

  12. - Come on Man! - Friday, Dec 16, 16 @ 10:50 am:

    And there is your serious candidate for Speaker.

    ===a crack===

    Was the Rauner Christmas party last night? What did they put in the egg nog?

  14. - Anon - Friday, Dec 16, 16 @ 11:50 am:

    How about convicted felons like Ford not be allowed to hold public office?

  15. - Signal and Noise - Friday, Dec 16, 16 @ 11:55 am:

    Ford is not a convicted felon and you’re a coward and an idiot. Get back to your agency job “Anon”

    I sternly support term limits of 12 years for members of the GA.

    However, I do not even know what term limits for Madigan even means. You can not or should not go retroactive. And besides his position as Speaker is a separate issue.

    If the info presented is all there is to this it seems incredibly stupid.

    I imagine a lot of Dems would like to see Madigan go as a Rep and certainly as Speaker but they are afraid to lead the charge.

  17. - Honeybear - Friday, Dec 16, 16 @ 12:26 pm:

    I’m concerned with Rauners efforts to split off members of the black caucus. Big efforts were under way. I realized that when I became confused at the inclusion of Jimmy Odom in the original founders of Intersect Illinois in January. Why? With all due respect Odom is a business lightweight who got the company he founded literally bought out from under him. Why is he so involved? It has become very apparent that he has been very busy making deals and connections. ADME is a shell organization/initiative. They produce great headlines and newsprint but little else. But maybe I’m wrong. I’d love to hear if Rep. Ford is enrolled in the ADME program. He is an “entrepreneur”. Hmmmmmm

    Sigh…I understand that in a post-fact world some think that facts don’t matter. But Ford isn’t a convicted felon:

    Something was in the egg nog somewhere, but it appears to have been at a Dem function. That crack is getting a little wider. Still slight but growing.

    I know you know all. Pretty soon I guess you’ll know this too.

    Uh oh just the start now. Drury 2018
