Question of the day
Friday, Dec 9, 2005 - Posted by Rich Miller NBC-5 may have jumped the gun a little yesterday when they reported that Joe Birkett had agreed to be Judy Baar Topinka’s running mate. The station’s 10 o’clock report was far less definitive about the matter, claiming Birkett was merely considering the idea. Topinka has asked, Birkett has received a lot of calls urging him to do it, he is considering it, and he is leaning towards it. As of last night, however, he hadn’t agreed yet, but the betting is he’ll do it. Expect some sort of announcement next week. Is this a good move for Topinka? Is it a good move for Birkett? How do you see this playing out? What are the advantages and the pitfalls? How would Topinka/Birkett match up with Gidwitz/Rauschenberger? Should Oberweis and Brady choose running mates as well?

Snow report
Friday, Dec 9, 2005 - Posted by Rich Miller I drove from Springfield to Chicago last night. I noticed that just about all of the downstate portion of I-55 was nicely plowed. But when we got to the suburbs, the road was a mess. It improved once inside the city. I don’t know if that means anything or not, but I’m wondering what your experience was yesterday with state and/or local snow removal…

Question of the day
Thursday, Dec 8, 2005 - Posted by Rich Miller Combine the poll numbers of Ron Gidwitz and Steve Rauschenberger and you get about 9.5 percent. Hardcore pro-life Rauschenberger supporters may have a tough time voting for the pro-choice Gidwitz for governor. Quite a few people may find it difficult to vote for Rauschenberger knowing that he will resign the ticket if Topinka wins the nomination. But like I wrote in yesterday’s Capitol Fax, the two men are hoping that the synergy created by their new “all reform, all the time” team will result in a sum greater than its parts. Is “reform” enough of an issue to win a Republican primary in Illinois? Are these the guys to do it, even if Gidwitz spends millions on TV ads?

Marion team strikes out with commission
Thursday, Dec 8, 2005 - Posted by Rich Miller The $3 million the state has spent on a baseball stadium for Marion doesn’t seem to be working out yet.
They can spin this all they like, but this is not a positive development by any means.

And back again…
Thursday, Dec 8, 2005 - Posted by Rich Miller Scott Reeder, the author of the Small Newspaper Group’s The Hidden Cost of Tenure series asked to respond to the Illinois Federation of Teacher’s response. I figured what the heck. Just means I don’t have to come up with my own stuff.
Once again, it’s your turn.
