Morning shorts

Wednesday, Mar 1, 2006 - Posted by Rich Miller

· No more med-mal crisis?

· Daley backs Stroger, but says nice things about Claypool.

· …less than one percent of the respondents could identify the five protected rights [in the 1st Amendment]: freedom of religion, speech, the press, assembly and to petition the government.

· Republican Jewish Coalition wants Farrakhan aide removed from anti-hate panel.

· Gidwitz talks jobs.

· University presidents bought off? And so cheaply, too.

· East St. Louis’ recent history of public corruption.

· Security for federal judges questioned.

· Here’s that Mary Mitchell column I referenced in today’s Capitol Fax.

· Stroger endorsed by Latino leaders.

· Marin on Blagojevich.

· “The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation is taking issue with Republican congressional candidate Kathy Salvi’s use of the former president’s image in a flier this week.”

· I received a Kathy Salvi press release yesterday that was pretty funny. In it, she noted that her opponent David McSweeney had triggered the “millionaire’s amendment” with his “spending spree,” then added that she had loaned her own campaign $450,000.

· More later.

Obviously Carol Marin never gets outside of the precincts of Chicago. Or perhaps she doesn’t believe the numbers polls. What a kiss-up article.

Anon 7:19- you said exactly what I was getting ready to write. If she ever gets out of the Ivory Sun Times Tower- she may get a different slant on things. (Visit a prison- talk to the correctional employees- she definately would get an ear full).

Is there any evidence that political columnists
are any better at predicting the outcome of elections than is the casual observer. I think a book that came out recently by Phillip Tetlock says no (Expert Poltical Judgment).

As I’ve said in the past, this election is probably going to come down to charm and the ability to connect emotionally with voters. If this is true, Blago and JBT are well-matched.

As Marin pointed out, Blago is acting like the primaries are over and he is attacking JBT directly. Nobody has accused him of having incompetent campaign advisers. Oberweis, Gidwitz, Brady are goners. They should take note, ratchet down their ridiculous anti-JBT campaigns, and get out of the way. Otherwise, should there be a Topinka admin, they may not have much of a say in it.

Saw this in another string late last night, but haven’t been able to find anything out on the web about it. Anyone else heard anything about it?

    “- Anonymous - Tuesday, Feb 28, 06 @ 5:35 pm:

Conservative is right to call Bill Brady the real deal. He a man of integrity and honor. In fact, I heard that this past weekend he witnessed a car accident and ran to help, ripped off his shirt and wrapped it around the head a young boy who was injured in the accident. This is a man of honor who would show the same caring and integrity in the role of governor.”

I’d be very interested to know if this story is true.

Who does this Marin work for.The way she was slobbering over Blago it sounded like one of his campaign writers.Have her come down south and just walk thru some of the small towns and ask just one question. What do you think of our governor.

  6. - Establishment Republican - Wednesday, Mar 1, 06 @ 1:25 pm:

Carol Marin is no Steve Neal. That is for sure. His journalism and insight is vastly missed.

And to think that less than a decade ago, Carol Marin and Jerry Springer were engaged in quite a little tiff with each other. Now, they have both evolved into open left-wing shills.

  7. - Establishment Republican - Wednesday, Mar 1, 06 @ 1:27 pm:

I am glad to see the Republican Jewish Coalition (to which I cop to being a proud member) get involved in this matter of the Farrakhan associate appointment controversy.

My State Rep., Sid Mathias, also has called upon Blagojevich to answer for this appointment but the Governor remains mysteriously silent.

This has the potential of being one of those stories for him that does not go away, no matter what he does.
