Poshard gets more

Monday, Mar 6, 2006 - Posted by Rich Miller

Hard to argue with success.

Two months after taking the reins of Southern Illinois University, clout-heavy Glenn Poshard has the school in position for the greatest increase in state funding for 2007.

That puts Northern Illinois University and the state’s seven other public universities at a financial disadvantage in a year when the state is prepared to give them relatively few dollars.

Lawmakers who have NIU in their district are crying foul, alleging that all the university presidents agreed to a flat 1.5 percent increase in general funding for all schools. They say it was politics that put SIU ahead of everybody with a 1.9 percent bump..

Yes, if your definition of a successfull university is one which gets more tax payer money than its peers.

And what will the univeristy do with this money? I guess that really isn’t important….

SIU has a plan in place and has suffered more cuts than many of it’s counterparts in the last few rounds of budget cuts from the state. Maintaince on many of its structures is suffering because the University has worked so hard to keep the cost of attending there as low as possible. I can’t speak to other schools in this state, but I know SIU deserves every dime of an increase it can get.

Let’s face it, Poshard has more experience with the political process than the other university presidents. He was one of them for a number of years. Also, the fact that he was a former candidate for gov. for the Dems has got to help.

  4. - Anonymous - Monday, Mar 6, 06 @ 7:18 am:

Let’s face it: Poshard is a democrat insider and the gov needs help, a lot of help, in southern Illinois.

So this gov will mindlessly, aimlessly, throw money around and wait to count the votes.

Sorry, Rod, but it won’t take long to count your southern Illinois votes this year.

He simply got his reward for putting the muzzle on Mike Lawrence. The press tries to liken Poshard as if he were Paul Simon Jr. The fact is, he is just another politician greasing the system. Complete with shutting up the (governor’s) opposition.

Dad gumit boys, ol Glenn has been walking on water for years. You ain’t seen nothin yet so you Yankees up at NIU just watch him and RGod take money away from you and give it to him. And you amatuers think you can outwit Elvis and Glenn? Ha!

  7. - SalukiDog - Monday, Mar 6, 06 @ 8:36 am:

Roy Slade has it right - took the words out of my mouth…Poshard managed to put the clamp on Mike Lawrence and his columns…Glenny Boy gets an A+ (plus a huge increase in state funding) for shutting down free speech and dissent on GRod…

    Go Dawgs!
About time SIU gets its share…..Pols have been dumping cash on the Illini Nation for way too long.
Wonder when Glendall will recognize the potent beachhead he has in SPI and the make the most of it? Right now he seems focused on the Edwardsville campus to appease MetroEast pols.

How about some night law school classes held at the Med School facility. Talk about fun

It would have been nice if Mr. Poshard had won the Democratic nomination in 2002. That way, if the Democrats won the governorship, we would have a pro-life individual in that spot, rather than Rod.

  11. - Cat - Monday, Mar 6, 06 @ 8:39 pm:

What will the additional money be spent on? Rewarding Dems in the Edwardsville/Metro East area; surely a pol as inside as Poshard understands that there are strings to the money…..

  12. - These are our choices? - Monday, Mar 6, 06 @ 10:43 pm:

Reddbyrd, I agree! It has been far too long that this state has wasted its precious dollars on providing moderate funding to its flagship university. How dare those corrupt pols spend more money on a college with the largest public university library system in the world, a college with a top 5 national engineering program, a college with the #1 accounting program in the nation, etc. We need our politicians to end the wasteful spending on the excellent University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign so that it too can be a mediocre institution of higher learning like SIU.

  13. - Anon - Tuesday, Mar 7, 06 @ 1:53 am:

SIU? SIU? You mean there is another University in Illinois? From what all of my co-workers and neighbors tell me there is only one school in the state. You know the one that won’t give up the outdated mascot. It is about time somebody else got some money. At least the SJ-R pays them lip service each spring when they get invited to the dance. Go Glenn, Go Dawgs!

  14. - Saluki - Tuesday, Mar 7, 06 @ 12:56 pm:

Can’t Rauschenberger make sure NIU gets overfunded any more?
SIU has been underfunded for years. If you look at the number of new capital projects at NIU compared to SIUC, its obvious that funding increases for SIU are long overdue. Besides, SIU is a research institution with a national reputation while NIU is an oversized suburban commuter college.

  15. - Establishment Republican - Tuesday, Mar 7, 06 @ 1:26 pm:

NIU is a far superior institution than SIU, where one simply has to be able to count to 12, give or take a couple numbers, in order to be accepted.
