Senate cancels Friday… and some afternoon shorts

Thursday, Mar 30, 2006 - Posted by Rich Miller

Senate President Emil Jones just announced that the Senate will reconvene on Tuesday.

Here are some more updates, since session is just about finished for the day and I have some time while I’m waiting on some return calls.

· Chutzpah award, from Bernie’s column today:

[Alexi] Giannoulias told me he thought his financial background was the key to his win. I said some people thought his TV ads featuring U.S. Sen. BARACK OBAMA, D-Ill., had a lot of effect.

“That’s for the political people, the insiders,” Giannoulias said. “I mean, it didn’t hurt, I’ll say that much. And he helped me get my message out. But I think at the end of the day, the message was, let’s get someone with financial experience for a financial position.”

· Ryan jury seeks transcripts

· Sweeny slams Rep. Winters. Greg strongly disagrees.

· A ten-million-dollar plan to reduce public school class sizes in Illinois won House approval today and goes to the governor for his signature. But even supporters question whether there’s money to fund the plan and whether the money wouldn’t be better spent in other education areas.

· Gov. Blagojevich’s “Less Red Tape” bill wins House approval, heads to Governor’s desk for his signature

· State employees would help fund new Amtrak routes, supporters say

· Rep. Reitz joins Century Club

· Roskam interview

· Precinct committeemen — don’t give away your vote in 17

· Homeschooling Freedom– Is it ebbing away in Illinois?

· Cheap Trick will name their new album ‘Rockford’ after their home town of Rockford, Illinois.

· Who will be the Kingmaker?

· State may add 2 daily train trips to Chicago

· Lawmakers close to letting prostitutes sue pimps

I would like to sue Mayor Daley, He’s been pimping the city of Chicago for years.

  2. - The Flame - Thursday, Mar 30, 06 @ 3:37 pm:

Red Tape? how about a Red INK reduction bill, Governor?

Cheap Trick is one of those amazing bands that still sounds the way you remember them. Since the Beach Boys washed away, Cheap Trick needs to be adopted as the new perennial concert band for the State Fair Grandstand.

  3. - Wumpus - Thursday, Mar 30, 06 @ 3:39 pm:

Is this intentional Rich, Cheap Trick in the same brief as the prostitutes v Pimps story?

I thought you could not sue for something that is illegal? Also, is this another redundant law? Could this not be handled as assault, etc?

  4. - Winters of our discontent - Thursday, Mar 30, 06 @ 3:46 pm:

Rep. Winters is my new hero this week, for telling it like it is. Sweeney is out of line on this issue: the very obvious campaign speeches Blago makes his directors do for him at every opportunity, have every right to be challenged, and “politeness” has nothing to do with it.

It wasn’t polite to go to Winter’s district and bad-mouth his party with outright lies about THEIR lack of cooperation, when the governor refuses to meet with them, and won’t even come down to Springfield to listen to their input.

When the guys in charge are a bunch of liars trying to foist untruths on the public, it’s every citizen’s duty to speak up and question them.

Man, now it’s gonna be enen harder out there for a pimp.

  6. - SenorAnon. - Thursday, Mar 30, 06 @ 4:09 pm:

    that should read “even.”

  7. - DOWNSTATE - Thursday, Mar 30, 06 @ 4:11 pm:

Just goes to show you that Pimps don’t vote.If they did Blago would be wanting to give them a tax credit instead of lawmakers wanting them to be sued.

  8. - Team Sleep - Thursday, Mar 30, 06 @ 4:54 pm:

What would you call the pimp’s PAC? PIMPAC? Would it really be a good idea for PIMPAC to donate to a candidate or another PAC? I can imagine the possibilities. Perhaps PIMPAC could get together with the Beer Distributors and a group that represents cigar companies.

  9. - Scott Cisek - Thursday, Mar 30, 06 @ 5:21 pm:

    -DOWNSTATE
A good friend of mine from university became an English professor at a city college in Chicago. One day, he assigned his freshman a theme asking them to describe who they were voting for in 2004 and why.

One essay – and I saw this paper with my own eyes – consisted of only three (ahem) sentences. I reproduce them here verbatim:

I a pimp. Pimp don’t vote. Pimp HATE vote! (sic)

My buddy was unable to even attempt to grade the work, but he did consider making up “Pimp Don’t Vote” bumper stickers. His girlfriend, also a teacher, convinced that such a sticker would send the wrong message to our youth.

So, you are correct, pimp don’t vote.

  10. - HeKnowsBarack - Thursday, Mar 30, 06 @ 5:24 pm:

Funny you would mention pimps and Alexander in the same section. Glad to see he appreciates the work of Sen. Obama. Wonder how “Jaws” is doing these days.

  11. - Anonymous - Thursday, Mar 30, 06 @ 5:58 pm:

RICH….Thanks for bringing Cheap Trick to mind. You made my middle-aged day! And how cool of them to give their home town an album!

  12. - Lovie's Leather - Thursday, Mar 30, 06 @ 8:34 pm:

Yeah. Less red tape. This looks like a ploy to make public schools very private… except when it comes to funding. Get rid of all the reports that the public should know about and try to turn the school system into Chicago city government. Great grand wonderful. Man Illinois sucks.

  13. - Beowulf - Thursday, Mar 30, 06 @ 9:51 pm:

Mr. Giannoulias is hilarious, a real riot. You can tell he is a kid with a lot to learn. Barack Obamma’s endorsement of Larry, Curly, and Moe would have put them into the White House.
Oh well, Alexi has much to learn as he grows into his political office.

  14. - NotALipinskiFan - Thursday, Mar 30, 06 @ 10:31 pm:

As someone who actually inquired about having a wedding at the Abraham Lincoln Museum, I think it is ridiculous that people like “blowhard Black” refused to recognize that certain state historical sites, like the Abe Museum, could pull in a lot of cash by permitting people to rent the facilities and serve liquor. Prohibiting this does nothing to help anyone.

As for the century club…trust me when I say this bill will receive reconsideration and PASS during this session.

  15. - Why not ride amtrak? - Thursday, Mar 30, 06 @ 10:34 pm:

I’ve taken advantage of the $17 special from Chicago to Springfield, and I can report that the ride is amazing and definitely worth leaving the car in Chicago. I only wish there were more opportunities to ride the train. Every time I attempt to take it, its sold out bcuz so many people are using it! What’s with that!! GET MORE SERVICE AND RECEIVE more money ILLINOIS!!
