Question of the day

Monday, Dec 18, 2006 - Posted by Rich Miller

It’s a holiday week and I’m expecting comments will be pretty light for the next several days (before I shut down the blog for a week or so). Let’s have a little fun today.

This has been done by others, but I don’t think we’ve ever touched on it here. Our current state slogan is, of course, “Land of Lincoln.” Come up with a new one.

Land of Corruption is OK by Us (we keep voting them in anyway!)…maybe a little long for the license plate. Happy holidays to all!

“Where’s My Piece of the Action?” This would make a good two liner, top and bottom of license plates, wrap around coins, seals, flags, etc. I suggest a nice 3/4 profile showing the good side of Al Capone, a bottle of booze and a Tommy Gun. An alternative would be a full size outline of a convicted governor, (your choice of individual) holding a citizen upside down by the ankle with change, dollar bills, contracts and other loot streaming from the citizen pockets.

  13. - capitol view - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 11:20 am:

hey, “just a thought” - did you know that the State of Illinois was created for the specific purpose of going into debt? Everytime Congress createdd another state, it diminishes the power and influence of the current states already in it - adds two more Senators and at least one more House member. But Congress wanted to link the Mississippi River with Lake Michigan, for trade and commerce to circle the entire nation at that time. And the Congress did not want to pay for it with east coast generated tax revenues. So the residents of the NW territories were told that if they agreed to issue state bonds to pay for an Illinois(River) - (Lake) Michigan canal, then Congress would not look too closely at their statehood application. (The Illinois River links to the Mississippi, for those of you geographically challenged.)

The State’s founders said okay - but then they saw the proposed boundaries of the new state that Congress intended for them. It was all of Illinois up to just south of Joliet! The Illinois area settlers said - wait, if we are going to put up the bonds for the canal, then we want the economic benefit of it at Lake Michigan terminus. So the northern boundaries were shifted up to the current ones. And the State of Illinois was created - with what would emerge as Chicago as part of it. Two years later, the State founders kept their word and issued bonds for the Illinois-Michigan canal.

Before the canal even opened, though, a new phenominum emerged across America. The railroads! So the canal was obsolete even before it opened, and the lack of use almost bankrupted the State.

The conclusion can only be that being heavily in debt is a proud Illinois state government tradition. Putting up the current Capitol almost did us in, too. Maybe not license plate logo material, but a fact…
