Congressional and Cook County results *** Lipinski wins big *** Sauerberg, Seals declared winners *** Tribune loses *** Schock wins huge *** Alvarez wins ***
Tuesday, Feb 5, 2008 - Posted by Rich Miller * 8:41 pm - With 36% of the vote counted, Congressman Dan Lipinski has 53 percent, to 24 percent for his closest challenger Mark Pera. * 8:45 pm - The Republicans were more than a bit worried by the spectacular number of undecideds in their poll of the US Senate primary, but with 13 percent of the vote counted, their anointed candidate Steve Sauerberg has 56 percent of the vote. *** 9:30 pm *** The AP has called the race for Congressman Dan Lipinski. He’s got 53 percent of the vote with 77 percent counted. Also, Dan Seals has a gigantic lead over Jay Footllik in the 10th. And with just 31 percent counted, Rep. Aaron Schock is trouncing his opponents. He has 74 percent. That should more than hold up. *** 9:34 pm *** With 80 percent of the vote in, Anita Alvarez has a slim one-point lead over Tom Allen in the Cook County State’s Attorney race. Larry Suffredin is further back and Howard Brookins is 9 points behind Alvarez. Also, slated candidate Gene Moore is whomping on Daley-backed Ed Smith 61-39 with 81 percent counted. And Justice Alan Greiman lost big. *** 9:47 pm *** The AP declares Sauerberg the winner. Dan Seals was given the nod by the AP in the 10th Congressional. *** 10:22 pm *** It appears that incumbent Board of Review member and county party chairman Joe Berrios has stomped “reform” candidate Jay Paul Deratany in the city and even carried the county. I guess this means that Cook County wants a tax hike? Well, wasn’t that the Tribune’s take?
Moore won, too. Big. *** 10:25 pm *** The Associated Press has declared Rep. Aaron Schock the winner. No surprise there, but he has 72 percent of the vote in a three-way primary. Wow. *** 11:17 pm *** Zorn reports that Tom Allen has conceded the Cook County State’s Attorney race to Anita Alvarez.

I’ve just arrived home from my day as a judge. The entire election was a farce. In the middle of the day one of the judges cancelled out all of the paper ballots on the scanner. (Sheer incompetence and stubborness. And yes we rescanned the ballots but who knows what happens while the ballots are roaming around the room during the confusion.)
We also found a ballot that had been partially voted stuck in the middle of a shrink-wrapped batch that came from the Election Board. There could have been more that voters didn’t notice because the races being voted were the ones few people care about.
Plus people were being refused a legit ballot because the stubborn judges don’t understand what they are doing. It is a power trip for them.

Ouch to Ed Smith and Alvarez, I didn’t see her coming.

Not necessarily good for Obama, from Williamson County with nearly all in:
BARACK OBAMA 4,076 47.93
HILLARY CLINTON 3,928 46.19
Obama isn’t the most popular of guys in the deep south.

I did.
Looks like Suffredin has lost.

Amazing how Forrest Claypool endorsed so many losing candidates - Jay Deratany, Mark Pera,Dean Maragos, Ed Smith, Eddie Winters in the 10th HD,John Moynihan in the 56th HD, Kenny Johnson in the 26th HD plus at least half of his judicial candidates lost - is Forrest’s endorsement a kiss of death for a candidate?
- Radical Moderate - Tuesday, Feb 5, 08 @ 10:24 pm:
The shocker in the 3rd CD is that Bennett did so poorly - less than 10%. Not as surprised that Lipinski got over 50%… but maybe this will remind many that, like his father, Lipinski knows how to work the halls of Congress to bring home projects for his district. Plus, there are still a lot of pro-life Democratic voters in the 3rd CD.

What I find amusing is that all of the candidates the Governor put up against the Madigan incumbents lost. Wow, Blago’s coat tails are really powerful these days.
What’s going on with Eddie Washington’s race? Looks like he’s only up by 100 or so votes.

I like Alvarez a lot, and think she will be a force for good change — but some of the TV folks are saying “she had no political background, she had no money” — the first part is true, but her family self-funded $600K, which is why she had the most TV on the air.
- Six Degrees of Separation - Tuesday, Feb 5, 08 @ 11:00 pm:
Giving Milk Dud 2 high profile victories in less than a year, after an entire political career of losing. See, there is always a chance for those who hang around.
Speaking of which- Andy Martin will likely end the night with the endorsement of 200,000 Illinoisans.
- ZC - Tuesday, Feb 5, 08 @ 11:03 pm:
It’s not just Alvarez. If you look through the judicial races on the Chicago elections website, the women candidates tend to be whomping the men. To stand a chance against a female judicial candidate, a man needs a last name like “Burke” or “Byrne.”
Something else that doesn’t get talked about as much with the much-heralded “youth vote” is how girl-heavy it is. I had a pollwatcher friend email me earlier, “Do any men under the age of 25 vote in Chicago anymore? All the younger voters coming into my precinct are women.” Women outvote men in general now, but it’s especially pronounced now in the under-thirties.
- A 9th CD Democrat - Tuesday, Feb 5, 08 @ 11:06 pm:
Add Jan Schakowsky to the list of those whose endorsements are the kiss of death - her candidates for State’s Atty, Water Reclamation, Recorder of Deeds and Board of Review. She couldn’t even carry the 9th CD for her hand-picked candidate for Board of Review.

Centrino-
Yeah, I kinda liked the guy. But let’s see how long he sticks around Utica.
Baldermann will have a tough race as Deb Halvorson has built up a good following in the east part of the 11th.
And how about Joe Serra, who didn’t really campaign, edging out Jotham Stein, an attorney who put in a good bit of $, for 3rd place in the 14th D primary?

State’s Attorney race is wide open. But, Alvarez will get womens vote and appears to have some momentum. With that said, here is my prediction.
Alvarez will pull off a Giant type of upset.
Alvarez- 26%
Allen- 23%
Larry- 22%
Brookins 21%
Milan 6%
Brewer 2%

I knew Illinois was considered a “blue” state, but to hear Illinoise (sp on purpose) went about 2.5 to 1 presidential is incredible to me. I really hope it’s not just Chicago — Because I want to believe that he can transcend race, class and, ultimately parry.
I pray, that the awful bigots out there, that when they show their faces, that they show the majority of America, that the color of this country is different shades of gray, not just black & white.
