Kevin,
Your Birkett drug bust link doesn’t work. Try this link to the Sun-Times: http://tinyurl.com/6qxcee
From the Sun-Times: ‘Joe Birkett, a tireless prosecutor of drug-related crimes, said his son was “a guest in someone’s home” and did not own or possess any of the alleged contraband in the apartment.’
So it seems that “I don’t live here and that stuff ain’t mine” is now a meritorious defense against narcotics charges in DuPage County.

That Childres win should have the GOP and McCain rethinking their strategy. time for another contract with America

Sigh. Why are we arresting anybody for pot possession. Sure, some tell us it’s a gateway drug, but eating too much is a gateway to diabetes. Is the role of law enforcement to save people from themselves? It does sound like Birkett is a little creduous re the excuse but he’s right, it IS a family problem.
Of course it’s a lot easier for our, well, thinking-challenged police to do pot busts than to
go after drug dealers. That takes brains and planning. It’s easier to just bust kids for pot.

People say it’s a gateway drug, but my own experience says it’s not. I know dozens of people who smoked pot when they were younger (I don’t think many of them do now, but it’s none of my business). I would be shocked if one of them ever tried heroin.

The state buying Wrigley is a horrible idea. I wish Big Jim would just give up and do something else with his time.
I have a question for the young U of I grad. I am planning on attending the White Sox Caucus this evening, but am confused as to which Cubs shirt to wear. Should I go with Theriot or Lee?
I would ask Mr. Miller, but I’m afraid of his answer.

Perhaps we should hire a bouncer.

The pot of today, is nothing like that of a few years ago. It is closer to cocaine. It is highly addictive and one of the harder drugs to kick.

That is just ridiculous. Where did you read such propaganda?
- Ghost - Wednesday, May 14, 08 @ 10:09 am:
There was an article floating around that the pot of today has been genetically enhanced to increase the THC content to roughly 4-5 times what it used to be. BUT this is a bit misleading, because it also appears the amount being used by individual is less.
i.e. its more concentrated (like say laundry detergent), so people use less of it (like laundry dtergent). Thus the amount actually being consumed is the same, yah just need less
Now the stuff laced with other drugs is a different story.
- Michelle Flaherty - Wednesday, May 14, 08 @ 10:10 am:
guess I better start smoking pot again.

Big Jim wants the state to buy Wrigley so Blogo can privitize it to fund his legal bills.
- Anonymous45 - Wednesday, May 14, 08 @ 12:36 pm:
I think Big Jim is very trying lately…Why in the name of God is Winston and Strawn so intent on defending the Gov? What’s in it for them? Somebody please offer a reason why a money grubbing, high falutin’ politically connected, Republican leaning law firm would do this…Thank you…sorry to be clueless but I am what I am…

Whoo boy, Cassandra, I couldn’t agree with you more. This is another one of those important issues on which the Green Party has a significantly different position from that of the Democratic and Republican parties. To quote the national platform, “…Law enforcement is placing too much emphasis on drug-related and petty street crimes, and not enough on prosecution of corporate, white collar, and environmental crimes…Prisons should be the sentence of last resort, reserved for violent criminals. Those convicted of non-violent offenses should be handled by other programs including halfway houses, electronic monitoring, work-furlough, community service and restitution programs. Substance abuse should be addressed as a medical problem requiring treatment, not imprisonment, and a failed drug test should not result in revocation of parole. Incarcerated prisoners of the drug war should be released to the above programs…We call for decriminalization of victimless crimes. For example, the possession of small amounts of marijuana…We call for an end to the ‘war on drugs.’ We support expanded drug counseling and treatment.”
