If you haven’t voted early, then vote often

Wednesday, Jul 2, 2008 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Voting ends tonight for the All Star teams. Jermaine Dye has been playing like a dream, but he really needs your votes. Yes, I said “votes.” You can vote up to 25 times, so head over there now and get on with it. It’s legal ballot box stuffing, so Illinoisans ought to shine at this. If that link doesn’t work, try this one.

Tell us who you picked and why in comments. Also, did you write anybody in? Just for fun, I wrote in Alexei Ramirez, the Cuban Missile. The kid can play, and the pitchers can’t figure him out yet.

Rich, your hyperlink to the ballot doesn’t work.

  2. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 9:09 am:

Works on both my browsers. Not sure why it won’t for you. I’ll post a different link in a second.

  3. - Rep. Ed Sullivan - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 9:13 am:

Come on Rich, the Cubs Fukudome need’s a little help too. If the Cubs and Sox fans can come together and put their animosity aside maybe it will spill over into the Capitol!

    Rep. Ed Sullivan

  4. - Ben - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 9:23 am:

Lee better than Pujols…Soto leading Molina? You can tell that enough Chicago fans have already polluted the entire process. Go Cards!

  5. - The Doc - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 9:24 am:

He’ll be overlooked since the likes of 2B Chase Utley and Dan Uggla are having monster years, but Mark DeRosa is worthy of a spot, somewhere. Solid defense at 5 different positions thus far, coupled with an OPS around 900.

  6. - Anon - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 9:30 am:

Write in Carlos Quentin, he’s earned it.

  7. - Ultra50k - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 9:32 am:

Jermaine Dye…C’mon Rich there are a lot of better outfielders in the American League. The most overlooked is probably Jose Guillen.

  8. - Wumpus - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 9:32 am:

Yes, Soto leading Molina. Molina has a better arm, but these All Star games are all about offense. Soto dwarfs Molina’s offensive production.

I have always been a Dye fan…I remember some idiots chirping when they gave him his recent contract

  9. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 9:35 am:

Ultra50k, have you watched Dye play this year? He’s been outstanding. A true professional. No flash, just awesome offense and defense every day.

  10. - Joe Schmoe - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 9:47 am:

Hate to say it, Rich, but I skipped the AL ballot for the NL good guys ballot…..

  11. - Wumpus - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 9:48 am:

Now Rich, can you say anything nice about the Cubs players? For a pretty non-partisan political guy, can some of that rub off on your baseball fandom?

  12. - Old Shepherd - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 9:52 am:

It will be a crime if Albert Pujols is not a starter in the All Star game.

  13. - Wumpus - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 9:53 am:

I picked AJ, CQ, Dye, Lee, A Ram (Chipper is a lock if he is healthy), Derosa, SOto. Also picked McClouth from Pit, Arod and Jeter (although I hate the Yankees).

  14. - Greg Tuite - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 9:57 am:

Rich - can’t believe Sox players are so far behind in the balloting despite being a first place team. After the weekend I didn’t think it could get much better, but last night’s win was great. This will all play into Ozzie’s “we don’t get no respect” shtick.

  15. - Been There - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 10:03 am:

I wrote in Carlos Quentin. Pretty sneaky of MLB. They fill in the form from the previous vote submitted except they re-check the boxes that ask if you want to receive information. I kept unchecking the boxes but then screwed up and forgot on one of my last votes. Looks like more junk mail coming my way.

  16. - Truthful James - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 10:19 am:

The Sox have turned around their batting averages and winning percentages over the past 40 days. before that the heart of the order was close to the Mendoza line. CQ carried them during those dog days.

People in Chicago and elsewhere weren’t aware that the Cubs and Sox were so good. This is becoming an amazing year.

I am a Sox fan, but we can now hope for a chance to beat them in the World not the City series. That will settle the tree and three rhubabrd.

Perhaps this the year we can put to bed the old “September Salary Drive” canard and the transfer of the Wrigleys to the Philipines where their name would be changed to the “Manila Folders.”

  17. - Reality Check - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 12:01 pm:

Leaving emotion out of it - cuz I hate the Sox - Dye and Quentin are deserving. There’s a case to be made for Danks and Linebrink though neither will make it.

  18. - Reality Check - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 12:09 pm:

BTW there are a good 7 or 8 AL 2Bs at least as deserving as Alexei Ramirez and four - Pedroia, Upton, Kinsler, Roberts - vastly better qualified.

  19. - YNM - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 12:33 pm:

Pujols has always been and always will be under-appreciated. He’s the picture of consistency, but flash in the pan years for guys like Ryan Howard will always get more attention. Seriously, who has ever done more in their first 8 years?

Wumpus, Soto is dwarfing Molina’s offensive production? Sure, his power numbers are better, but he also has 71 strikeouts to Molina’s 12. And Molina is hitting for higher average. Dwarfing might be an overstatement. Unless of course you are the type who likes to give a gold glove to the guy who has more home runs.

I think Soto is deserving actually, but a valid argument could be made for Molina, and not just on his arm alone.

  20. - Vote Quimby! - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 12:36 pm:

If I were a Cardinals fan I would want Pujols to get a 3-day break!

  21. - Reality Check - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 1:31 pm:

Yes, Soto is dwarfing Molina’s offensive production - he’s got him by 150 points of OPS. That’s the same difference as Pujols had last year over, say, Ryan Garko. I hope you agree that qualifies as “dwarfing” but if you would like to have Garko and Molina, I will take Soto and Pujols and we’ll see who wins more games.

  22. - Leigh - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 2:20 pm:

I think it is high time to bring back Sox blogging on Fridays! Last nights game was awesome. You gotta love those boys. Quentin is my write in. I have been doing my best to stuff the ballot boxes at the stadium, I have perfected voting on several ballots at one time. Maybe I can move to Chicago now?

  23. - jwscott72 - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 7:30 pm:

To answer Rich’s question, I voted for:

AL: Konerko, Grudzielanek, Crede, Eckstein, Cye, Markakis, Matthews Jr and Thome as the DH.

Why? I’ve heard of these people and they are neither Red Sox or Yankees.

NL: Derek Lee, DeRosa, Ramirez, Theriot, Soto, Edmonds and Fukudome. I wrote in Reed Johnson.

Why? I don’t like Soriano and you can figure out the rest.

I supported the White Sox like Rich said to do. LOL

  24. - Wumpus - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 9:32 pm:

RC, I like Soto. By dwarfing, I meant HR, RBI, runs, slugging. Molina has a better arm and avg, as well as strikeout numbers..that is all.

  25. - Reality Check - Wednesday, Jul 2, 08 @ 9:53 pm:

And I was agreeing with you. Soto is far and away the more valuable and productive hitter.
