* More Tribune poll numbers were released today

A quarter of respondents to a Tribune poll say they or a relative lost a job in the last year, and half fear it could happen to them or a family member in the next 12 months.

Among poll respondents, unemployment is the chief economic concern (36 percent), followed by stock market values and general price increases (each with 20 percent).

* More

Two in five say they are worse off than a year ago. Half say they will cut back on holiday spending this year—and only 1 in 100 say they will spend more on gifts.

* Drill down and there are some more depressing results. Here are the results for respondents who named the economy as the most or next most thing they were worried about…

* The fear of losing their job or of someone in their immediate family losing a job…

* Family financial situation vs. a year ago…

Check out the response from suburbanites and you can see why the Illinois Republicans are starting to freak out right now.

Has anyone done the early voting? I am going today.

  2. - Levois - Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 10:26 am:

Huh? Are the people more willing to trust Democrats in this current environment. Nationally things might be different, but in the state I’m not seeing it. Nothing suggests to me that Democrats can be trusted to revitalize the state economy. In a perfect world we shouldn’t rely on either party for this kind of deal.

You know, say what you will about Gov Rod, but he did things for HIS voters.

Really, at the National and even state level a lot of times R’s DON’T do much for those who vote for them.

Not much for stay at home Moms. Worse, they try to pump up H1-B quotas who compete for jobs with their voters.

    Things happen for a reason.

  4. - Phil Collins - Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 10:44 am:

    I’ll vote tomorrow.

Levois, I agree that I don’t trust Democrats to improve anything. Sen. Obama says that this election should cause change, and I agree. We can change the government by electing more Republicans. Democrats control the U.S. Senate, U.S. House, IL Senate, and IL House. If IL voters want to change the government, they’ll ensure that Republicans regain control of those four houses. If that happens, they’ll cut tax rates, cut spending, defend us from terrorists, and discourage illegal aliens.

Best of luck to whoever wins.

  6. - Six Degrees of Separation - Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 10:50 am:

If that happens, they’ll cut tax rates

    For the upper brackets especially.

    cut spending,

Not on GWB’s watch they didn’t. And where were the spending bill vetoes when he had a Congress of D’s OR R’s?

    defend us from terrorists,

    Good job here.

    and discourage illegal aliens.

Neither party does more than lip service on this issue, as there are vested interests in both parties to leave things the way they are now.

Is there any research on who the early voters are? I haven’t seen any.

To each his own, but I’d never consider it. I’d be worried about something happening between my vote and election day that would change my mind.

Plus, I take great comfort and joy in ritual. Walking the three blocks to my polling place early on a cool autumn morning is something I look forward to it every time. My poll watchers, extraordinarily pleasant and civil Dems and GOPers, have been a constant since the Lincoln/Douglas race, I believe. They have fresh-baked cookies for the early birds, too.

  8. - Louis G. Atsaves - Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 11:10 am:

When I early voted there was a Seals supporter/volunteer/paid person handing voters literature near the door and demanding that we all vote for Dan Seals and “put our racism aside and end the Bush monarchy!” He was a youngish, college aged white type of person.

That certainly didn’t go over too well with the small group I walked in with.

  9. - Pat Collins - Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 11:14 am:

person handing voters literature near the door

If it’s 150 feet or less to the voting area, (maybe 500) that’s only slightly ILLEGAL.

  10. - Deeda - Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 11:26 am:

I voted today any the election judge told me that they have had over 3,000 voters, and today there was a long line of people. There were no political signs or people handing out literature.

  11. - Deeda - Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 11:32 am:

I have a silly question!!! Unemployment is high, so why is it when I look in the employment section of the newspaper I see 3-4 pages of jobs that are out there? That just confuses me.

  12. - jimbo - Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 12:15 pm:

I voted two days ago in Springfield & there was a long line. My wife voted yesterday & said there was a long line then. Noticed people of all ages. 70+ couple behind me said they were voting for Obama. Heard the same kind of comments from others in line. IT’S ALWAYS THE ECONOMY.

I experienced the same thing last weekend, only the young gentleman was handing out Kirk literature, but he wasn’t demanding anything. He was reading a sci-fi book, actually.

When I voted on Saturday, I arrived 30 minutes after the polls opened and waited for about an hour. It was uncomfortably hot and the hallway we waited in was dark.

  14. - VanillaMan - Wednesday, Oct 22, 08 @ 2:24 pm:

For the past two years we’ve been told by one party that we’re in a recession. Thanks to their poor handling of Fannie May and Freddie Mac, we now are.

So it is no surprise that poll show a grumpy pessimistic mood.

Will may be a bubble or it may be a long term recession. It will depend on who is elected next month.

Don’t leave us in suspense, VMan, tell us which one. Since you’re not a hardcore partisan, we have no way of knowing who is the economic savior.

We don’t know. Neither do I.
