Election results open thread

Tuesday, Apr 7, 2009 - Posted by Rich Miller

* This will probably be my last post until Thursday. My intern Mike Murray will do a large Morning Shorts tomorrow with everything from all categories. I’m having a wisdom tooth removed in the morning and will likely be out of commission most of the day. Hope nothing big happens.

Anyway, enough of that. This is an open thread to discuss tonight’s local election and special congressional election results.

Have fun.

* 8:19 pm - OK, just one update: Jeff Clarke has been elected mayor of Pawnee. God help us all.

Also, some guy named Mike Quigley has all but won a congressional seat.

I completely forgot about the election until I saw a blurb in this blog earlier today and then proceeded to forget about it again until I saw this post. I don’t even remember seeing it mentioned in the Trib or Sun Times.

  2. - Scooby - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 4:42 pm:

Slightly off topic, but the White Sox are on pace to go 162-0.

  3. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 4:46 pm:

And we’re gonna stay on that pace, Scooby. :)

    Go Sox.

  4. - Boone Logan Square - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 4:47 pm:

    Jim Thome for Congress.

Rich, may the drugs they give you for the tooth work well.

  5. - Bill - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 5:02 pm:

You are in for it, Dude! make sure you take the gas.

  6. - Pat Collins - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 5:04 pm:

    having a wisdom tooth removed

Be sure to follow VERY carefully their instructions on how to avoid “dry socket”. You will be VERY sorry if you don’t.

    I sure was :(

  7. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 5:06 pm:

Let’s stick to the elections, please. I don’t wanna see any more horror stories or warnings. lol

  8. - anon64863 - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 5:19 pm:

@Objective Dem - Election blurb was on pg 8 (eight!) of the Trib today

  9. - 32nd Ward Roscoe Village - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 6:14 pm:

Just voted, was #80 in my precinct! No one hanging around outside and no signs, The place, which also has two other precincts, was deserted.

  10. - Wumpus - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 7:32 pm:

I was number 1 voter at 7:30 am. Rich, My wisdom teet were a dream to get out. Best of luck. The pain killers did have me backed up like the Eisenhower in a snow storm

  11. - Pat Collins - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 7:43 pm:

My precinct had 30 voters around 9 am or so. Heavy turn out? 300 or so would be 30%…..

  12. - Bob Myers - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 8:28 pm:

Congrats to Jeff Clarke. Now I know why my Dad sold our house when I was 18 and we moved out of Pawnee. :)

  13. - Third Generation Chicago Native - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 8:30 pm:

Ya some guy named Mike Quigley, shock cough, coug
Now to see the games begin on his open Cook Couty Commisioner’s seat.

  14. - Bob Myers - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 8:32 pm:

Rich - By the way, you do realize that Jeff is now the Liquor Control Commissioner of Pawnee.

  15. - Six Degrees of Separation - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 9:42 pm:

Lake County “Build 53″ referendum overwhelmingly passes - 75.7% to 24.3%, higher than I thought it would go.

  16. - USA Patriot - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 9:43 pm:

Mayor Richard Hyde of Waukegan goes down in an upset! One factor was the large number of Latino voters who turned against him for his anti-immigrant policies.

  17. - Pat Collins - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 9:48 pm:

15% turnout in my area of McHenry - this time vs Nov.

  18. - David - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 9:53 pm:

It seems as if Democrats are losing in some democratic strongholds that are not in/around cook county

  19. - Pot calling kettle - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 9:55 pm:

My people smoked!!! God, I love election night!

BTW, Rich, I had all my wisdom teeth pulled in one shot. My advice: Sit in a comfy chair with your feet up and eat French Silk Pie or chocolate mousse for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Just rinse with a little liquour when you finish. If anyone questions your actions, you just tell them you had your wisdom teeth pulled! It works for at least a week, then they make you go back to work.

  20. - Pat Collins - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 10:00 pm:

Mayor Richard Hyde of Waukegan goes down in an upset!

To a guy who is a county board member, and whose father was a long time Mayor of Waukegan. How is that an upset??

  21. - Curious Joe - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 10:06 pm:

Does anybody out there know what the reinstatement status of Illinois Historic Preservation Agency employees is. Latest I heard is it is eminent and pending, possible executive order by Quinn.

  22. - Honest Abe - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 10:06 pm:

    A new mayor for Berwyn.

  23. - Heartless Libertarian - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 10:11 pm:

In a close race for the heart of Lake Zurich… CARE sweeps. All LZCARE candidates have won.

  24. - icephisher - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 10:11 pm:

Todd Scalzo wins in Wheaton. A hard worker gets his due.Congrats Todd

  25. - Anon - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 10:18 pm:

The guy who is winning for Niles mayor has a guy on his ticket with seven felony convictions, including setting off a pipe bomb at a restaurant. He is barred by state law from serving as a trustee unless the Governor gives him clemency.

  26. - Six Degrees of Separation - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 10:23 pm:

Oh, and those township “Disconnect from Cook County” advisories in Palatine, Hanover, and one other township all passed, too.

  27. - Been There - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 10:29 pm:

Rep Bob Rita’s mother just won her Cal Township super seat. Great women who has been a hard working alderman in Blue Island. Some help from the speaker helped put her over the top.

Kim Biederman could have used some more help from the Madigan clan though. She lost her bid for Niles mayor even with support from the local democrats and Madigan minions.

Jerry Hurkes, Lipinski’s former chief of staff, went down in flames in his bid for Oak Lawn mayor. Thank God. What a jerk.

Paul O’Grady, one of Mike Sheahan’s top guys won his Orland township supervisor spot pretty handily over the incumbent Maher. Dan McLaughlin easily won re-election as Orland mayor over the other Maher (cousins).

Don Tabor lost big for re-election in Stickney. His local senator may not be unhappy.

Rep. Yarbourgh’s father won re-election as mayor of Maywood. Putting the nail in the coffin (again) for Gene Moore’s home team. Somehow he can win county wide but not at home.

  28. - Pale Rider - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 10:31 pm:

    Beware of dry sockets!

  29. - Excessively rabid - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 10:37 pm:

Leland Grove turned down the IMRF referendum again. Village employees are not covered by any pension system, not even Social Security. I think it’s wrong that municipalities in Illinois can refuse to provide even a minimal pension system to their employees. Of course the employees can go elsewhere, which they do. If there are pension changes in Illinois, the municipal pension system should be included. Illinois is the only state that has thousands of municipal entities each deciding pension coverage for itself.

  30. - They march... they vote!!! - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 10:50 pm:

Well maybe Mayor Hyde in Waukegan is now sorry he decided to spend the last four years harassing Latinos! The Latino precincts went for Sarbonjian 55% to 45%. The Illinois Coalition for Immigrants has registered over 1,000 voters up there during the last two elections and they were working Latino precincts hard today.

Not good to get those Latinos mad!!!!

  31. - Pot calling kettle - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 11:04 pm:

I think frequent alcohol washes are key to preventing dry socket. (In more ways than one!)

  32. - Six Degrees of Separation - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 11:09 pm:

O’Hare’s most entrenched opponent, Bensenville Mayor John Geils, got tossed. Looks like this closes the chapter on a losing crusade.

  33. - Carbon Deforestation - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 11:18 pm:

Maybe Geils lost since he didn’t have the Finkl Steel / Blago “machine” to help him out this time around.

  34. - heet101 - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 11:25 pm:

    Congratulations Jeff Clarke!

  35. - Honest Abe - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 11:38 pm:

Ugly charges and name calling continues in Berwyn. Lovero and O’Connor insult each other during concession call! Details in the Berwyn Life.

  36. - Lake Voter - Tuesday, Apr 7, 09 @ 11:45 pm:

Sen. Bond and Sen. Link got smoked in Round Lake were they backed idiot Gentes. The local state republicans Duffy & Sullivan came in and won that proxi war. Link got burned in Waukegan were a dem defector won over Links shlep.

Some one ask Link if it was “an up day”.

  37. - beagle - Wednesday, Apr 8, 09 @ 12:05 am:

Dane Placko beats David Visk in Lyons. Guess it doesn’t pay to be racist, sexist, and a jerk at the Mickey D’s drive thru.

  38. - Carbon Deforestation - Wednesday, Apr 8, 09 @ 12:06 am:

Lake Voter - I have always thought that Sen. Link took too much credit for Dem wins up there and he probably gets too much blame accordingly for their losses.

  39. - Carbon Deforestation - Wednesday, Apr 8, 09 @ 12:11 am:

Jerry Hurkes was unable to defeat the incumbent mayor in EP

  40. - Levois - Wednesday, Apr 8, 09 @ 12:12 am:

Perhaps it’s a good thing I’ve never heard of this Clarke character.

  41. - Lake Voter - Wednesday, Apr 8, 09 @ 12:19 am:

    Carbon D.

You are probably right. He acts so high and mighty that I hope he gets a good ribbing for the loses.

  42. - Quinn T. Sential F/K/A Blago Sphere "TM" - Wednesday, Apr 8, 09 @ 12:36 am:

How about Hurkes getting completely trounced? Where were the Lipinski foot soldiers to carry him to victory?

  43. - Sprfld - Wednesday, Apr 8, 09 @ 6:56 am:

Congrats to the Rita Clan. Rep. Bob Rita’s mom is now the Supervisor of Calument Township and everyone of his trustees won. NOt to menttion the rest of his slate. They took out every single incumbent. Good Job Bob.

  44. - Keepin' it Real - Wednesday, Apr 8, 09 @ 7:23 am:

Excessively rabid: a little more info should have been forthcoming in your diatribe against Leland Grove. The truth is that voters turned down the IMRF proposition before, and the program was quietly implemented anyway. And, in fact, this new system is a DEFINED BENEFIT program. Who in their right mind would implement a defined-benefit program in this day & age?

It was discovered by most LG voters a couple days before the election that the plan had been implemented despite voter opinion, and I think we’re seeing some backlash.
