Question of the day
Friday, Apr 24, 2009 - Posted by Rich Miller * What music video would you like posted when comments are closed for the weekend later today? I’ll make my decision based on the intensity of your nominations, not the number of nominations, so please explain fully.

- VanillaMan - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 10:18 am:
“The First Cut Is The Deepest” - Sheryl Crow.
I nominate this video in honor of our current budget predicament, and our political leader’s refusal to cut anyone except state workers.
- Wumpus - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 10:20 am:
I remember hearing a song with a bunch of friends riding in the car with Wumpus Sr. I remember us laughing as the song was hillarious to a bumch of kids. This song is perfect for this state and this country (soon to be). What do I win as this thread is ova!
Either version, I’m Busted by Johnny Cash or Ray Charles. I am thinking I heard the Ray version.
- Vote Quimby! - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 10:22 am:
What every Illinois citizen would wish Blago would do: “Jump” by Van Halen.
“I get up and nothing gets me down. You’ve got it tough, I’ve seen the toughest soul around…you got to roll with the punches to get to what’s real.”
- IrishPirate - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 10:25 am:
You Light Up My Life by Debby Boone. Because it is possibly the worst hit song ever.
- Some Guy - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 10:26 am:
Song, schmong - play the Victory Auto Wreckers commercial. It’s a Chicagoland classic.
- Johnbtes - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 10:27 am:
I would have go along the same lines and say “Money” by Pink Floyd, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_anbEJsr6s&feature=related
It completely embodies the financial situation and what got us there.
- phocion - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 10:28 am:
“Money” as performed by John Lennon in the early 70’s. Here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gzr1jhlcNc&feature=related
In honor of all of the special interest groups who are booing or cheering the Governor and the Legislature as this year’s session begins to percolate.
- Rod sez I'm pork - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 10:34 am:
Timebomb by Old 97’s.
Joyfully tapping to the rhythm of the Apocalypse of your choice.
- Captain Flume - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 10:39 am:
Is there a video of “Taxman” by the Beatles? I don’t get around a computer much on weekends, but think it would be a good tune, given the current situation and time of year.
- Third Generation Chicago Native - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 10:41 am:
Let’s think White Sox! It’s baseball time in the City!
White Sox
- Little Egypt - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 10:44 am:
There are several “Taxman” videos on Youtube. I second that nomination.
- Anonish - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 10:44 am:
Land of Confusion
Between Stroger and Blago I think a puppet Ronnie Regan wearing a Superman outfit actually seems sane.
- Hipster doofus - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 10:45 am:
Big Time…Peter Gabriel. “I’m on my way I’m making it. So much larger than life.”

Two Hangmen by Mason Proffit

Friend of the Devil by the Dead in honor of that rat, Lon Monk. I wish you the worst, dude.

Gnarls Barkley - Crazy - OMG it’s perfect

- Vote Quimby! - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 11:13 am:
I like “Big Time” but a different lyric:
My parties have all the big names
And I greet them with the widest smile
Tell them how my life is one big adventure…
With a snow-white pillow for my big fat head
And my heaven will be a big hell, and
I will walk through the front door.
- Saluki Way - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 11:15 am:
In honor of Rod’s failed attempt to get on the reality show and his trip to LA…
Buck Owens: Act Naturally
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7ks3hoE58U
- Fan of the Game - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 11:16 am:
“10538 Overture” by the Electric Light Orchestra. The lyrics exude the pain of people who find life tough to handle in “these times” and ask how can we sit back and just watch.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PC02EnshI5U
But if we need a positive song (and many do), the you can’t go wrong with Triumph’s “Fght the Good Fight”.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrLB5xaj3jM
Of course, I like Del McCoury Band’s “All Aboard for its fast-paced bluegrass and high lonesome sound.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgLIo0eTc8Q
Or, for just some good funked-out fun, Vinegar Joe’s Never Met a Dog is a sweet listen with Robert Palmer laying down the smooth vocals and Miss Elkie Brooks on background.

- Jimmy87 - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 11:19 am:
Warren Zevon - Lawyers, Guns and Money
Seems more than appropriate these days.
- Curious - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 11:26 am:
Led Zepplin’s “Dazed and Confused” - more for the title than the lyrics.
- Antimachus - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 11:29 am:
I ahve to second Jimmy87. Lawyers, Guns and Money is a great theme song for the circus our former Governor is Ringleading.
- anon - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 11:32 am:
Casino Queen
Well the money’s pouring down
And the people all look down
And it’s floatin’ out of town
Let’s go to ESTL and gamble. The budget man, the budget.
- Matt Dietrich - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 11:33 am:
Max Roach playing a drum solo using only the hi-hat. Amazing! Either that or that cat flushing the toilet.
- Sap - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 11:33 am:
The Who “We Won’t Get Fooled Again”. We probably will get fooled again, but we are supposedly more circumspect and ethical and what have you. I’d like to think that the new boss isn’t the same as the old boss.
- wordslinger - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 11:33 am:
Anxiety, unemployment, deficits, Pakistan, taxes, bailouts, Iraq, fraud, corruption, Afghanistan, foreclosures, anger, fear, Iran, torture, division…
To hell with it. It’s Friday, the sun’s shining, and it’s 80 degrees. Let’s put our differences aside — Cubs, Sox and Cardinal fans — and join in with one we can all call our own, Harry Caray, for “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”
All right, let me hear ya, a one, a two, a three…
- I'mTellingYou - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 11:35 am:

- The Old Bobby - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 11:41 am:
Most of us have serious concerns about the state we live in. In some cases, fear and worry play a huge role in everyday life. The conditions seem to be out of our control. People need something to make the quality of their lives better, and something to make us all feel happy.
Dear Mr. Fantasy by Traffic and the 19 year old Steve Winwood.
- 47th Ward - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 11:43 am:
Beat me to it Jimmy87:
“I was gambling in (Costa Rica), I took a little risk. Send lawyers guns and money. Dad, get me out of this. Hey!”
- Speaking at Will - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 11:46 am:
I am going to nominate Booby McFerrin and “Dont Worry Be Happy”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9K4BKkLaCI
Its going to be a beautiful weekend, and for all of Blago’s crazy talk and the state budget mess I am going to forget it all this weekend. Saluki baseball is at home against Illinois State and I am dragging out the grill and the cooler for some college baseball relaxing.
Plus I met a really hot girl the other day and we are getting along great. Needless to say, all this politcal banter will be gone from my mind. Whistle on Bobby!
- Stuck with Sen. CPA - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 11:47 am:
Power pop for a lovely spring day? Check.
Treadmills for those of us shedding layers? Check.
Chicago boys done good? Check.
Title ripe for political snark? Check.
OK Go - Here It Goes Again

Hair - Aquarius
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9oq_IskRIg
- Old Shepherd - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 12:01 pm:
Howse about the Budweiser Clydesdales trotting to the King of Beers song in honor of the impending weekend of baseball between the Cards and Scrubs? It’s similar to the video they play on the Busch Stadium jumbotron at every game. Plus it’s a catchy tune. It’s one thing that 1/2 of Chicagoans and 90% of us downstaters can agree on!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aWzuQ1ufGs
- Reddbyrd - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 12:03 pm:
How about the will i am version of yes we can to celebrate first 100 days!
- L.S. - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 12:03 pm:
Jimmy87 beat me to it. Send Lawyers, Guns and Money.
- Jacksonville - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 12:15 pm:
Ozzy. Crazy Train
- Phineas J. Whoopee - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 12:15 pm:
I would nominate Free Fallin’ by Tom Petty in tribute to the moron swingin’ in the wind in California and also analogizing his future.
- rich winston - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 12:18 pm:
Scissor Sisters - I Don’t Feel Like Dancing
- Heartless Libertarian - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 12:19 pm:
It is a beautiful day… almost summer. Cubs and Cards tonight… How about we go into the weekend with “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”, played by internet piano player and Illinoisan Allen Dale…. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBD1hcp6hSA&feature=channel_page
- South Side Mike - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 12:21 pm:
For all of us little people who can’t siphon off cash to fund all of our desires, Jerry Reed’s “She Got the Goldmine (I Got the Shaft)” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04RJyFCg7ks
Or, for a special Blago treasure, especially with the news about Lou Monk, Johnny Cash at San Quentin prison singing Folsom Prison Blues:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5Ts4M3irWM
Actually, just the Man in Black. He’s the way to go.
- fedup dem - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 12:22 pm:
Any bunch of five-year-olds singing “Happy Birthday to You,” this being the 67th birthday of Chicago Mayor richard “the Lesser” Daley, as well as the 20th anniversary of that tragic event in Chicago history, his first inauguration as Mayor. At least with 5-year-olds you might get a group that would believe the nonsense coming out of Daley’s mouth as being in the best interest of the people of Chicago!
- You Go Boy - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 12:24 pm:
“I Drove All Night” by Roy Orbison. A masterful musician that probably never got the props he fully deserved.
- Boscobud - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 12:33 pm:
We have to get VM to make a video with one of his creative songs.
If not than I suggest “Pretty Woman” is a song that reminds me of Balgo.
- Speaking at Will - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 12:34 pm:
Here is one that you wont be able to look away from. Absolutely fantastic. It features Rich Miller on the Conga drums.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UP0okDKLR2k
- Amy - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 12:36 pm:
Steam’s Na Na Hey Hey Kiss ‘Em Goodbye.
it’s the end of winter, finally, so we can send winter off, and it’s a classic baseball song, at least on my side of town!!!!
- Boscobud - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 12:36 pm:
Speaking At Will,
I think Blago is the man on the keyboard.
- fan - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 12:49 pm:
As we begin the last leg of this Session’s journey, what about ‘Follow the Yellow Brick Road’…we know that the wicked witch (Blago) is dead and obviously we have the Wizard in control(MJM), Quinn is Dorothy looking for the answers, the ‘mushrooms’ would be the Cowardly Lion who is afraid of (taxes), the other Leaders are the Scare Crow and the Tin Man depending on your perspective (Cullerton, Radogno & Cross)and the public would be Toto…the little dog along for the ride. It’s an amusing thought.
- Pot calling kettle - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 12:57 pm:
I think Foggy Mountain Breakdown by Earl Scruggs is the way to go. We need to cheer up. The economy is in the tank, the budget is a mess, everybody who works for the state is ticked off. As Steve Martin says, you can’t be depressed when you’re listening to the banjo. And Foggy Mountain Breakdown is the best.
My second choice is U.S. Blues by the Grateful Dead. It’s a fun song and with lines like: “Gimme five, I’m still alive, ain’t no luck, I learned to duck” and “I’ll drink your health, share your wealth, run your life, steal your wife.” and “We’re all confused, what’s to lose?” it seems appropriate. And, it’s the Dead, so how can you lose?
- Pot calling kettle - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 1:04 pm:
Actually, “Goin’ Down the Road Feelin’ Bad” by the Dead might be more appropriate given the reaction everyone seems to be having to Quinn’s proposals (and the threat some are making to move to Texas).
Plus it always comes with a great jam.
- He Makes Ryan Look Like a Saint - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 1:05 pm:
The Rolling Stones….You Can’t always get what you want.
Dedicated to our Ex-Gov.
- Reality Check - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 1:08 pm:
“The Weight.”
Because on a Friday night after a long session week, we all need to take a load off.
Because it’s The Band, with a definitive cover by Chicago soul icons the Staple Singers.
Because a lot of people have a lot of weight on them right now. (The weight of this budget hole. Or the weight of federal felony charges.)
Because there is a fine version by Gillian Welch with Old Crow Medicine Show at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXf-SuBbJa0.
Because we all know who is Crazy Chester in this scenario. (Or maybe he and the foul-mouthed missus are Carmen and the Devil?)
- Lefty Lefty - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 1:08 pm:
I’d second anon’s “Casino Queen,” but I don’t want to appear to be condoning the spread of gambling.
Something more non-specific yet timeless. Something to make us think and rock out at the same time. Something that represents both the desperation of the day and our species’ ability to rise above through music.
Ball of Confusion by the Temptations:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gy_aahkIdEI
Best line for today: “Vote for me, I’ll set you free!”
Turn it up!
- Old Shepherd - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 1:12 pm:
One more good point about the Clydesdales and the “King of Beers”…Could there be a better song for “Beer Blogging”?
- thelastwaltz - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 1:15 pm:
I 100% agree with the weight being the song of choice. It will also help celebrate the fact that levon helm will be coming to chicago in June.
- Obamas' Puppy - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 1:30 pm:
Paradise City - Guns and Roses. Because we are headed to where the grass is green and the girls are pretty!
- Dog the Bounty Hunter - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 1:32 pm:
I’m gonna have to go with Lawyers Guns and Money, also. Good song, great intro, and very appropriate.
Lawyers and money work for obvious reasons, but several other references work as well:
1) “Went home with the waitress…” - Tony Cole was a busboy;
2) “Gambling in Havana…” - gaming is still on the table, I believe;
3) “The s%#$ has hit the fan…” - speaks for itself.
- Truth - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 1:37 pm:
Free Fallin’ by Tom Petty.
Perfect title. Some lines in the song,
“She’s a good girl, crazy bout Elvis”
“I’m a bad boy for breaking her heart”
“all the bad boys are standing in the shadows”
“I’m going to leave this world for awhile”
- whizbang - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 1:40 pm:
Don Henley’s “End of the Innocence” “And lawyers draw up small details since Daddy had to lie”
- Dan S, a Voter and Cubs fan - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 1:42 pm:
“Magic Carpet Ride” by Steppenwolf because that’s the way it seems our elected officials are takeing us on. MAGIC CARPET RIDE
From the 1968 release “The Second”
Words and music by John Kay and Rushton Moreve
I like to dream yes, yes, right between my sound machine
On a cloud of sound I drift in the night
Any place it goes is right
Goes far, flies near, to the stars away from here
Well, you don’t know what we can find
Why don’t you come with me little girl
On a magic carpet ride
You don’t know what we can see
Why don’t you tell your dreams to me
Fantasy will set you free
Close your eyes girl
Look inside girl
Let the sound take you away
Last night I held Aladdin’s lamp
And so I wished that I could stay
Before the thing could answer me
Well, someone came and took the lamp away
I looked around, a lousy candle’s all I found
Well, you don’t know what we can find
Why don’t you come with me little girl
On a magic carpet ride
Well, you don’t know what we can see
Why don’t you tell your dreams to me
Fantasy will set you free
Close your eyes girl
Look inside girl
Let the sound take you away
- Lamballe - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 1:44 pm:
I second for Free Fallin’. Either the Tom Petty original of the John Mayer cover. Both are great.
- Dog the Bounty Hunter - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 1:45 pm:
Oh, and I forgot to add that “Guns’ are applicable because Mark Kirk talked about people getting shot for raising taxes.
- Vote Quimby! - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 1:54 pm:
“Been Down So Long (That It Seems Like Up To Me)” By Jim Morrison and The Doors. PMRC RATINGS ALERT: Adult lyrics in this nomination; may not be appropriate for a family blog.
I’ve been down so very damm long
That it seems like up to me
Warden, warden, warden,
Won’t you break your lock and key
Why don’t one you people
Come on, and set me free!
Always an “up day” when The Doors are involved!
- Buehrlemon - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 1:55 pm:
Kings Of Convenience - I’D Rather Dance With You
Perfect for a sunny day after one of the coldest springs on record. And as fun to watch as to listen.
ttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9r9sQ6PHOM
- LN - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 1:56 pm:
My first suggestion was Steve Goodman’s “Go Cubs Go”, but there’s too much Cubs hating on this blog for that. So instead, I offer another Goodman tune I think all the baseball fans can appreciate. “A Dying Cubs Fan’s Last Request”.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xBxZGQ1dJk
- Wumpus - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 1:56 pm:
Well dog, look what they are doing in Jamaca. The army has been called out prior to raising taxes.
- White Rabbit - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 1:58 pm:
In honor of our ex-gov, Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’”.
“Gonna free fall out into nothin
Gonna leave this world for a while
And I’m free, free fallin”
- Just My Opinion - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 2:01 pm:
Meet Me In St. Louis sung by anyone in honor of the Cubs/Cards. I’m predicting a great ballgame weekend, for the Cards that is.
- Masters Phil - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 2:02 pm:
This video is for “Apache” by the shadows. First brought to my attention by the Sports Guy a few years back, it is ridiculously entertaining. Like a train-wreck, impossible to look away. And the fact that the song “Magnificent” from the new U2 album reminds me of it has me doubting my uber-U2 fandom.

Lon Monk to Rod Blagojevich
“These Boots Are Made for Walkin”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEEeF5Hc8n8&feature=player_embedded
Now, you keep playing where you shouldn’t be playing
And you keep thinking that you’ll never get burned
Ha! I just found me a brand new box of matches…
- needing the nuge - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 2:09 pm:
With Monk in the game, Fitz has Blago in a stranglehold. It’s been that kind of week, Rich. We need Stranglehold by the Motor City Madman, the Nuge, Uncle Ted…
- 47th Ward - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 2:12 pm:
More Zevon:
“An innocent bystander, but somehow I got stuck
Between a rock and a hard place
And I’m down on my luck
Yes I’m down on my luck.”
Pretty much describes Rod and Todd’s current denial tour and the fate of us ordinary citizens.
- 312 - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 2:16 pm:
If Jimmy87’s “Lawyers Guns & Money” doesn’t win, I nominate “I want to be sedated” by the Ramones. It reminds me of how I feel sitting around the capitol…
Just get me to the airport, put me on a plane
Hurry hurry hurry, before I go insane
I can’t control my fingers, I can’t control my brain
Oh no, oh oh oh oh!
Twenty twenty twenty four hours to go
I want to be sedated.
- 47th Ward - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 2:18 pm:
With apologies to VMan,
“I went home with John Wyma
The way I often do.
How was I to know
He was with the G Man too.”
At least it’s a good song to be stuck in my head all day.

In honor of Blago, the Kink’s “Superman”
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3987972620450314950
Superman
Woke up this morning, started to sneeze
I had a cigarette and a cup of tea
I looked in the mirror what did I see
A nine stone weakling with knobbly knees
I did my knees bend press ups touch my toes
I had another sneeze and I blew my nose
I looked in the mirror at my pigeon chest
I had to put on my clothes because it made me depressed
Surely there must be a way
For me to change the shape I’m in
Dissatisfied is what I am
I want to be a better man
Superman superman wish I could fly like superman
Superman superman I want to be like superman
I want to be like superman
Superman superman wish I could fly like superman
Woke up this morning, what did I see
A big black cloud hanging over me
I switched on the radio and nearly dropped dead
The news was so bad that I fell out of bed
There was a gas strike, oil strike, lorry strike, bread strike
Got to be a superman to survive
Gas bills, rent bills, tax bills, phone bills
I’m such a wreck but I’m staying alive
[look in the paper, what do I see,
Robbery, violence, insanity.]
Hey girl we’ve got to get out of this place
There’s got to be something better than this
I need you, but I hate to see you this way
If I were superman then we’d fly away
I’d really like to change the world
And save it from the mess it’s in
I’m too weak, I’m so thin
I’d like to fly but I can’t even swim
Superman superman I want to fly like superman
Superman superman wish I could fly like superman
Superman superman wish I could fly like superman
Superman superman I want to be like superman
Superman superman I want to fly like superman

Speaking at Will, that was a brutal video. All that is missing is Zamphir with his pan flute. I watched it twice.
- ExPress - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 2:57 pm:
The late Stevie Ray Vaughan, playing “Lenny” live, sweat dripping from his face, ash dripping from his cigarette, and utterly amazing tones dripping from his Stratocaster.

- Speaking at Will - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 3:12 pm:
Glad you enjoyed it Jake. Its a real classic piece of cinema. Still trying to confirm that it really is Rich Miller on the congas in that video.
- OLD TIMER - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 3:30 pm:
Billy Joel’s “It’s a matter of trust” and Peter Wolf’s “Come as you are”
- anon - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 3:32 pm:

“We’ve gotta get out of this place”
It’s good wherever you are or whatever you’re caught up in.
- Fan of the Game - Friday, Apr 24, 09 @ 3:32 pm:
I would also recommendLiving on a Thin Line by The Kinks>. yes, it’s about England, but the lyrics describe the world as it is today:
Now another leader says,
“Break their hearts and break some heads.”
Is there nothing we can say or do?
Blame the future on the past,
Always lost in blood and guts.
And when they’re gone, it’s me and you.
Living on a thin line,
Tell me now, what are we supposed to do?

Glad there are some other Kinks fans here. “Low Budget” seems most appropriate. Times are hard, but we’ll all survive. We’ve just got to learn to economize.

Anyone for the old classic “I fought the Law?”
Breakin’ Rocks in the hot sun
I fought the law and the Law won
I fought the law and the Law won
I needed money ’cause I had none
I fought the law and the Law won
I fought the law and the Law won
Take your pick of Bobby Fuller, The Clash, or Green Day.

Mercedes Marxist by the St. Louis band the Living Things in honor of my Democratic friends. There is a you tube video from SXSW that I would link to if I was not on my blackberry

Metallica - …And Justice For All. The lyrics just say it all too well.
Halls of justice painted green
Money talking
Power wolves beset your door
Hear them stalking
Soon you’ll please their appetite
They devour
Hammer of justice crushes you
Overpower
The ultimate in vanity
Exploiting their supremacy
I can’t believe the things you say
I can’t believe, I can’t believe the price you pay
Nothing can save you………
