Question of the day
Tuesday, Sep 1, 2009 - Posted by Rich Miller * I thought about trying to come up with a comparison of this video to Illinois politics or a specific Illinois politician, but I think I’ll just leave it up to you instead… * The Question: Who (or what) does that bumbling karate chopper most remind you of in Illinois politics? Explain. ![]()

Andy Martin, hands down.
- A Moderate's Moderate - Tuesday, Sep 1, 09 @ 12:50 pm:
Jim Oberwiess - He just cant seem to crack into any office he tries.
- Rich Miller - Tuesday, Sep 1, 09 @ 12:52 pm:
You took the easy way out, Tom. And you didn’t explain.
My vote goes to the Tribune editorial board. So many of their whacks miss the mark, and the ones that do don’t seem to crack the… um… nevermind.

Quinn - he keeps swinging and he keeps missing
- Pot calling kettle - Tuesday, Sep 1, 09 @ 12:58 pm:
The voters.
Each coconut is a politician that claims they will provide open government.
- ChampaignDweller - Tuesday, Sep 1, 09 @ 1:25 pm:
Blago–he keeps taking shots at people and missing by a mile.
- Skeeter - Tuesday, Sep 1, 09 @ 1:30 pm:
I also go with Quinn. He seems like he’s trying, and he seems to think that he’s capable, but he just can’t do anything right.
- Dan S, a voter and Cubs Fan - Tuesday, Sep 1, 09 @ 1:31 pm:
Hands down Blago, nuff said.
- Irish - Tuesday, Sep 1, 09 @ 1:41 pm:
The coconut heads have to represent the GA. They sit their oblivious to the pain they are causing, uncaring, and keep the sweet milk to themselves.
The karate guy could be the Illinois taxpayers and voters who try to get the politicians to open up but of course they won’t.
Or the karate guy could be Quinn who brought the wrong tools to control the GA. He brought his soft hands instead of a big hammer.
- Downstate weed chewing hick - Tuesday, Sep 1, 09 @ 1:42 pm:
According to his new book, Rod Blagojevich would have chopped open all of those coconuts if it were not for the Madigans refusing to support his “softer coconuts for Illinois” program.
- You Go Boy - Tuesday, Sep 1, 09 @ 1:43 pm:
Deficit Hawks…”CUT THE BUDGET”…”CUT THE BUDGET”….”CUT THE BUDGET”…..(Damn!..)
- 47th Ward - Tuesday, Sep 1, 09 @ 1:53 pm:
The Illinois GOP in the 21st Century. They keep trying to bust my coconuts and only end up hurting their hands.
- Captain Flume - Tuesday, Sep 1, 09 @ 2:05 pm:
The chopper reminds me of Dan Hynes trying to crack open a reputation as a viable gubernatorial candidate. So far, he’s only bleeding the media for attention.
- Commonsense in Illinois - Tuesday, Sep 1, 09 @ 2:13 pm:
no, no, no…It’s got to be the Cook County Board trying to undue Stroger’s tax increases…WHAM missed…WHAM, Damnit missed again…WHAM, Hey third time’s the charm, right?…WHAM #$*#!!!
- Malcolm - Tuesday, Sep 1, 09 @ 2:24 pm:
Deborah Sims — Just when she thinks she’s come up with a good plan for the county, WHACK she misses again.
- dupage dan - Tuesday, Sep 1, 09 @ 2:48 pm:
Pat Paulsen, I mean Quinn. Takes a flippin and keeps on floppin.
- wordslinger - Tuesday, Sep 1, 09 @ 2:58 pm:
Simple-answer politicians and citizens. Really it’s easy, all I have to do is….
If it were easy, it would be done by now.
- MrJM - Tuesday, Sep 1, 09 @ 3:01 pm:
Rich,
More than any one person, this karateka reminds me of the Illinois Green Party.
He claims to be able to do it, shows extreme confidence that he really can do it, and, just for a moment, you think he just might do it.
But when he gets his shot he steps up and fails and fails and fails and fails…
And when it’s over, this guy is probably complaining to the reporter that the press doesn’t take his candidates seriously enough.

Oberweis - swings hard, misses hard
alternatively:
Blagojevich - I think the coconut chopper just said in Russian “yeah, that was basically an up day”

Study of a little-known ritual between the politican and the media. It seems to consist of two major steps that are repeated over and over again, as in a dance:
Getting–and suffering the consequences of–press attention for the things one does, or doesn’t do; and
Then having to do, or not do, something even siller to get press attention after *losing*.

(Sorry for the typos; something’s up with my keyboard.)
- Levois - Tuesday, Sep 1, 09 @ 4:14 pm:
No one can crack Blago’s skull!
- 22Skidoo - Tuesday, Sep 1, 09 @ 5:42 pm:
Now that Blago’s out, it’s Quinn, hands down. Everyone else is a wannabe compared to him–he set the bar higher, talked bigger, and had more riding on him than anyone else did.

siriusly, great translation. I think people could hear me laughing outside.
