And, if so, what amount? I am not asking this to be critical but rather it is just something that I have always wondered about. Kristen McQueary of the Daily Southtown newspaper had an excellent article a few days ago about our elected state representatives and state senators having the ability to grant individuals “tuition waivers” to any of our state of Illinois colleges and universities. The recipients of these “free tuition waivers” do not have to prove a need for these lucrative gifts (tuition waivers)to qualify for them (courtesy of the state of Illinois taxpayer). I decided to look up the list of students that had been given these lucrative “freebies” by my own local state representative and senator. Perhaps it was just coincidental but I noticed that many of the names of these local students who got these “freebies” courtesy of Illinois taxpayers just happened to be family members of some of our local politicians or, they were from families that were active in helping in the campaigns of the same political party that these state elected representatives and senators were from. Quite a coincidence? Many of these students came from families that do not appear to have a dire financial need for this assistance (courtesy of the taxpayers). How many kids from non-politically active families would be thrilled to have this dog bone tossed their way as their family struggles to make ends meet? It appeared (at least, on the surface) that it was more like tossing a “doggie treat” to someone who helped you or one of your fellow party members in their campaign efforts. Maybe this is just a normal “perk” for our elected officials to be able to give out to their Party faithful? And, it is perhaps something that both Democrats and Republicans have been doing for decades? However, as a taxpayer, I would say that Governor Quinn should revisit and “end” this lucrative perk that we have been allowing our elected state representatives and state senators to be handing out to those that they wish to reward. The miserable financial situation that our state elected officials have allowed Illinois to descend into makes this ongoing political practice seem “outrageous” to the average Illinois taxpayer. It may be perfectly legal but it certainly seems to be “ethically” questionable.
