–Ryan, for instance, called it hypocritical of Brady to question his ethics and judgment after repeatedly asking for his endorsement before Ryan decided to enter the race himself.–

    Good point.

  2. - Chathamite - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 10:53 am:

Sad that the headlines say “Gay” candidate when referring to Mesiter. They don’t say African American for Jackson or Greek American for Alexi…

  3. - OdysseusVL - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 10:58 am:

Great to see the Chicago Tribune back Dave Schroeder. That will be an interesting race. Schroeder has picked up some other high profile support recently too.

  4. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 11:25 am:

Re: Chuck Goudie’s ABC-7 I-Team report about Comptroller’s Office employee David Pippy

“That’s illegal. It’s stock manipulation,” said Stephen Macklem, chief financial officer of Chicago-based Veltex Corp. “I’m shocked the comptroller’s office has done nothing else.”

That has yet to be determined…
It’s not for Steven Macklem or Dan Hynes to decide that a crime has been committed here. The matter has been sent to state and federal investigators. So some higher authority is going to have to make the legality call on this. Comptroller Office spokeswoman is on record saying that pending the outcome of state/federal investigations Pippy still faces further discipline, which can include termination presumably.

While it is possible that Governor Quinn may be hoping to draw a parallel between Mike Randal of the IDOC issue and this, I think this David Pippy issue is more like the Carolyn Brown Hodge matter. David Pippy was not representing the Comprtroller’s office or state of Illinois or the Hynes administration. He was acting on his own, ill-advisedly on state time and state equipment. Likewise, Carolyn brown hodge was alleged to have done political work on state time using state equipement. The governor’s office elected to have the Inspector General’s Office investigate the matter, which under the circumstances was proper protocol. Ms. Brown Hodge elected to resign and the matter was closed to the public at the time. Quinn elected not to discuss the full circumstances surrounding Brown Hodge’s hasty departure.

  5. - Niles Township - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 11:30 am:

    A couple of notes:

    1. David Hoffman was shaking hands this morning at the Ogilve Station downtown.
    2. I heard the Stevenson radio ad for Justin Oberman. Not bad, but I think I heard as much about Stevenson as I did about Oberman. But that is not a surprise.

  6. - Obamarama - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 11:32 am:

    Re: Chicago Tonight Candidate Forum

Hoffman: The most impressive and articulate as usual. He clearly understands the issues, presents his qualifications and “job performance,” and doesn’t have the annoying Obama cadence that Alexi does.

Alexi: He is getting better on his feet as the campaign rolls along but he frankly just doesn’t come across as smart as Hoffman. Enough with those spread collars and the frat boy haircut by the way.

Cheryle: Couldn’t possibly be in any further over her head. There was absolutely no reason for her to be there and I can’t remember a single statement of substance that she made. Go away.

  7. - Disagree - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 11:36 am:

As much as I like Hynes, I disagree with his argument that all state employees should feel free to talk to the media. I assume most state agencies have a policy that all media questions and requests for information be filtered through the communications department or agency spokesperson, for the very reason mentioned in the article; I know that’s the way it works at my agency at least.

I also suspect that in his own office, media calls are expected to be handled by the Comptroller’s press folks. I’m sure he wouldn’t have appreciated it if all of his employees outside of the press office were spouting off to reporters about Burr Oak.

Again, I like Hynes, but the fact that DOC is requesting that all media outlets be directed to the communications department seems totally appropriate and should be a non-issue.

  8. - Anon - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 11:41 am:

–They don’t say African American for Jackson or Greek American for Alexi…–

That because African Americans and Greeks Americans have equal rights in our society. They can serve in the military, get married, adopt children and still be African Americans and Greeks Americans.

Here is what Jay Smith, the supervising producer of Chicago Tonight told the Windy City Times, “In addition to that statement, I’d also say that charges that Mr. Meister is being excluded from our forum because he is gay are ridiculous. WTTW and Chicago Tonight have a long history of coverage of and outreach to the LGBT community, and there are members of the community on our staff.”

Substitute African American and Greek American into that statement. I’m sure some of his best friends are LGBT too.

No Meister has been dissed by the media because he’s gay. Did anyone cover his Bear Packer game buy — the largest one day single buy in this race? The other candidates sneeze and it’s covered.

  9. - Downstate weed chewing hick - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 11:47 am:

What Brady said was not hypocritical. He didnt call Ryan a crook after seeking his endorsement. He said that the problems with his association with Levine and his judgment in the Cruz case make him unelectable. In other words, you can accept Jim Ryan’s position that he didnt know Levine was a crook and Cruz was innocent, but these issues will cause him to lose the general election (again). Brady is trying to point out he is more electable than Ryan, not more honest.

  10. - Responsa - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 11:49 am:

I’m amazed at the huge anounts of money and effort being spent on the LT. Gov. race. What’s going on? Are they planning on another governor being impeached/jailed as a path toward their career move to the next higher office?

  11. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 11:51 am:

LOL @ obamarama wrote, especially the “frat boy” part. If i weren’t for Mark Kirk, i’d be inclined to support hoffman.

the only things that i do not like about hoffman are his stances on gitmo cuba and trying enemy combatants in u.s. courts. his positions on national/homeland security are way too liberal.

  12. - Anon - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 11:52 am:

You know what speaks the loudest about the coverage of Meister? The best article Rich could find was out of St. Louis.

  13. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 12:39 pm:

if there is a God, she will see that Ricky Hendon and Dorothy Brown are elected on feb 2nd. these two are hoots and will keep things very entertaining.

  14. - Bill - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 12:44 pm:

Quit whining, Meister! You didn’t get on the show because you are a fringe candidate who is polling in single digits and doesn’t have a chance to win. It is a pet peeve of mine that some in protected classes use it as an excuse for lack of achievement.

  15. - The Truth shall Set you free - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 12:52 pm:

Does anyone have a link to the new Hynes Ad with Washington?

  16. - wordslinger - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 1:06 pm:

Tax Me More, you blame Madigan for high unemployment and the loss of manufacturing jobs? Then he really is powerful because that is happening all over the country. Did the Trib list China and Lehman Brothers as clients?

  17. - Highland, IL - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 2:39 pm:

RE: Candidate for Congress defends ‘cougar’ column bid

Jerry Costello must be feeling pretty good about his chances between these two. Highland isn’t even in his district.

  18. - OBEYMELL - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 2:53 pm:

I wonder if Commissioner Reyes will pay back the $22,000 worth of tax payer dollars he spent on a political mailer. Yeesh

  19. - Anon - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 4:15 pm:

After watching the GOP debate last night, I have to say that if Jim Ryan is nominated, you can chalk up another win for the Democrats in November. He looked disinterested, unprepared, and his entire campaign has chugged along at a pace that says he really doesn’t want to be doing this. That’s not a winning formula.

  20. - Dunkin "Doh"nuts - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 4:59 pm:

Went home yesterday to find not 1 not 2 but THREE

  21. - Dunkin "Doh"nuts - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 5:01 pm:

sorry–3 mailers from Dunkin in the same day. Even more funny, it has the same superimposed photo of him in a pinstripe suit in each flier. One gave him credit for practically every park, school and open space in the district. Unreal.

  22. - Quinn T. Sential - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 5:09 pm:

Jim Ryan’s entry into the race may be the songle best thing that has happened to Brady’s campaign. The three way split of the DuPage R-vote, as opposed to the two way split without Ryan, further helps Brady.

This non-sense of Ryan’s faux indignance is all for show.

  23. - Wumpus - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 7:14 pm:

Good criticism of Blowhard by Brady. i bet Proft is upset he didn’t come up with that first. Why no coverage of Adam Awgiefski?

  24. - Chicago Cynic - Thursday, Jan 21, 10 @ 11:11 pm:

Charging Channel 11 with being anti-gay is like saying Barack Obama hates black people. It’s just silly. Jacob Meister was excluded from the debate because he polls at about 1-2% in polls.

Lately, all he’s done is show up to do Alexi’s dirty work anyway. I can’t wait to see what he gets from Alexi when this election is over because according to every journalist I’ve talked with, he sure looks like he’s on Alexi’s payroll.

  25. - LouisXIV - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 2:45 am:

I’m also in the 5th District and think Dunkin’s mailers are a joke. Schroeder’s mailings have been very thoughtful and well designed and have been mailed more regularly. Schroeder was endorsed by the Tribune and will probably get the Suntimes’ nod tomorrow, as Dunkin did not answer their questionnaire. Also Schroeder outraised Dunkin 4-1 in the second half of 2009. This is definitely one of the state rep. races to watch on election night.
