New negative ad from Giannoulias uses old headline
Friday, Sep 10, 2010 - Posted by Rich Miller * Mark Kirk isn’t the only one who said he’d go positive and then ran a negative ad. Alexi Giannoulias is doing the same thing. Rate it… This is mostly a remake of an earlier ad, but with a new twist. At the end of the ad, the announcer says: “Now Mark Kirk is lying about Alexi Giannoulias in ads denounced as smears.” You may think they’re referring to Kirk’s latest hit, but they use a Sun-Times editorial headline from July. That editorial was about Kirk’s attempt to claim one of Alexi’s advisors was a BP lobbyist. * Roundup…

At a basic level the ad says only “don’t listen to Kirk’s ad.”
Where’s the part where they’re not supposed to vote for Kirk?

Not as effective as many of the other attack pieces because AG is unable to lock in current issues of jobs, economy and taxes.
Of the four top of the ballot attack ads, this is the weakest.

Regarding Burris’ Supreme Court petition, the Politico article says:
“While the implications of electing a senator for only a few weeks might appear to be small, the consequences of Grady’s decision are huge for Giannoulias and Kirk. Both candidates can now raise more money under federal election guidelines because they are technically raising funds for a completely different contest.
However, all of that will be nullified if one of Burris’ petitions is successful…”
How would the petition impact the double-fundraising decision? I would think that it would only add him to the ballot (possibly bumping Alexi as the Democratic nominee I suppose) but not affect the fact that there are two races with separate fundraising limits?

this continues to be the worst senate race of all time. say what you want about the fiasco in 04, but at least jack ryan and alan keyes attempted to talk about issues however nutty they were and that says something. An attack ad lying about a candidate that lied. This is a new level of patheticness.

Alan Keyes tried to talk about the issues?!?!? What race were you watching. Wow, talk about revisionist history.
Also, other than the constant “mob banker” references, this has been a pretty typical and benign race in terms of negativity.

Kirk the Liar is Alexi’s best negative opportunity. Kirk certainly gave him a lot of material. The buildup of misrememberings leads to a conclusion that you can’t believe anything Kirk says, especially when he talks trash about Alexi.
I give it a B+. I’d like to know who the voices are calling Kirk a liar, though.

I have several Kirk and Brady ad’s on TV. I have only come across the recent Quinn and Alexi ad’s on the blog.
Alexi and the Gov are being out campaigned.

Oh, Alexi, with that ad you’ve screwed the pooch. Who exactly is the ad supposed to be targeted to beyond your base? And what possible good outcome do you expect to get from it when it serves to make you seem like a petulant, defensive, name calling child. Then, to boot, it offers no reason to vote for you, nor even asks for a vote. When that ad is aired I don’t think the character you will have assassinated is the one you had intended.
Regardless of one’s political proclivities, on its merits this ad has to be viewed as one of the most ill-conceived so far of the current campaigns, because it breaks so many time-tested rules of successful advertising but doesn’t make up for that with any fresh note of creativity or zing. C-.

I like Giannoulias. But I hate this lying ad. It is disrespectful and tasteless. Shame on him for looking so desperate.

Production - A. Typical good guy bad guy ad with the CSPAN clips. Effective the use of actual clips from newspaper articles.
Liked the bold black lettering on white background (LIED). There was one clip that I thought went to fast - “I simply Misremembered it wrong” went too fast for me. I think that should have stayed on the screen for one more second. It doesn’t give the audience time to read it. I think that, to me, should be the thing that will make voters think twice about this guy.
The last statement should have been bolder or brighter. To hit that statement home. Especially with the anti-incumbent mood out there. While he isn’t an anti-incumbent to this office, he has been in Washington.
I also like that Alexi’s photo is in color against the black and white backdrop - unlike in Quinn’s ad where he’s B & W along with the rest. Having the candidate in color sets them apart from the negative.
Content: A+. I think this ad is effective in using the newspaper articles about how he has “Misrepresented the truth” and “LIED”. I think it makes the voter think this guy is going to represent me and he lies? Can I trust this guy. I do say that there should be something about voting for Giannoulias like someone else said.

Oh whole ad is an A. I guess I am alone in liking it. I’m not an Alexi fan but I think it should make the voter think about who they are hiring to be their senator.

Wordslinger the only problem with Alexi saying Kirk is a liar is that Alexi is a bigger liar. Lied about his dealings with organized crime figures. Lied about his position at the bank. Has lied about his charitable fund. Lied about Brightstart losses. This race sucks but Alexi is the bigger liar

This back and forth is mutually assured destruction for these candidates. They will force out any enthusiasm for the race beyond those hyperpartisans who will always vote for a party and not the candidate. The one who goes and sustains a positive approach first will win the independents…this back n forth school yard stuff won’t work for either of them.

This is Alexi’s worst ad by far. I tend to stick to the theory that you never want to cross the line and call your opponent a “liar”. It’s too negative and sours most people. Instead of “liar” or “lying”, they should’ve used “misleading”, “dishonest”, “untruthful”, etc. I’d give this one a C-

not sure who’s going to win the statewide races in 2010 but Illinois is definitely the loser. at least Daley made this interesting again.
