Question of the day

Friday, Jan 14, 2011 - Posted by Rich Miller

* The Statehouse press room was evacuated today. A water pipe may have burst or a fire sprinkler turned itself on, but whatever happened, the place is flooded. The office that I share with the Daily Herald wasn’t touched, but others got drenched and there’s now a strong moldy smell permeating the whole place, which will be empty until Tuesday at the earliest.

* The Question: Analogies?

We had so much fun with yesterday’s QOTD that I couldn’t resist doing it again today.

  1. - Rep. John Fritchey - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 12:30 pm:

That’s what the press corps gets for not paying more attention to Dan Hynes’ call for a Rainy Day fund.

  2. - been there - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 12:31 pm:

After you send out a dove and it comes back with an olive branch in its mouth, it may be safe to return. But probably you should leave all of those animals outside.

  3. - Hon. John Fritchey - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 12:31 pm:

And I apparently still have to get used to changing how I put my name :)

  4. - walkinfool - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 12:34 pm:

Well at least the two best kept their powder … oh wait, wrong metaphor.

  5. - Boone Logan Square - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 12:34 pm:

Did Pat Quinn see Flushed Away after the inaugural gala?

  6. - Davey Boy Smithe - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 12:34 pm:

Wisconsin may steal our businesses, but we’ll steal their water park crowds.

  7. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 12:37 pm:

State Government Soaks Someone Besides Taxpayers for a Change

  8. - Rob - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 12:37 pm:

We’ve always known the Statehouse is not a source for leaks…its a sieve.

  9. - The Captain - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 12:37 pm:

“Don’t **** on my leg and tell me it’s raining!”

  10. - Statewide - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 12:43 pm:

The Quinn administration said it inherited the faulty pipe from previous Governors and called in the clean-up crew, while Sen. Matt “Moses” Murphy called for legislation to repeal the flood.

  11. - OneMan - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 12:44 pm:

Springfield: A pipe burst in the statehouse press room, however since virtually all media has abandoned Springfield it was not noticed in days.

    or

The ’stink’ you smell reporters is not the deals that were done but water damage, yeah that’s the ticket.

  12. - Commonsense in Illinois - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 12:46 pm:

What many originally perceived as a flood in the State Capitol press room turned out to be just another deluge of press releases from the Governor’s Office detailing every breathing moment of Governor Pat Quinn.

  13. - Sine Die 10 - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 12:51 pm:

If you think it’s leaking now, just wait until the snow starts to melt….

  14. - Dooley Dudright - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 12:53 pm:

“Our house was burning,” said Illinois governor Pat Quinn after passage of the 67% tax increase. “Our fiscal house was burning.”

“We have an emergency, a fiscal emergency,” Quinn continued. “Our state was careening toward bankruptcy, fiscal insolvency. Even in the last couple of months, the situation got seriously more dire.”

“So the governor has to act at the moment. And that’s what I did. I ordered that the sprinkler system in the Capitol be selectively tested. In the press room. And I’m very proud to say that it works.”

  15. - Dooley Dudright - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 12:53 pm:

Uhmmmm……I guess this means………..the press corps is all wet? :)

  16. - Sine Die 10 - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 12:56 pm:

Another watershed moment at the Statehouse. Hopefully, all the Budweisers were resecued without harm!

  17. - wordslinger - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 1:01 pm:

–The office that I share with the Daily Herald wasn’t touched, but others got drenched…–

    Awfully fortuitous. Suspiciously fortuitous…–

–and there’s now a strong moldy smell permeating the whole place,–

Paul Lis back smoking cigars in the Trib bureau?

  18. - Closest To The Quinn - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 1:04 pm:

That’s what you #$$#*%^s get for making fun of my $2,000 coat with the fake fur trim that was stolen at the inaugural party.

  19. - RightGirl - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 1:05 pm:

“Water pipe? No, honey that’s God’s tears falling over the Democrat’s control over the statehouse”

  20. - South Side Mike - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 1:05 pm:

Hmm, a little warning to the media that if the criticism about taxpayers getting soaked by the tax increase isn’t curtailed, newspapers will find themselves swimming in legislation that repeals the newsprint loophole.

  21. - Irish - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 1:06 pm:

Headlines - “Tax Increase Passes Just Hours Before Predicted Flood Gates Open!”

In small print - Inundation was not creditors but water leak.

  22. - South Side Mike - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 1:10 pm:

It’s not so much an analogy, but perhaps a rather belated demonstration of how much water Blago needed to rinse the “product” out of his hair, and thus his need to live in Chicago where he could get unlimited free water from Lake Michigan?

  23. - Humm - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 1:10 pm:

    Rich,
I knew those other reporters were wet behind the ears!!

  24. - Rod Blagojevich - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 1:12 pm:

    Après moi, le deluge.

  25. - vole - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 1:12 pm:

Quinn, the miracle worker, who turned 3% into 5% by making the 1% disappear without a trace, attempts to sway the press corp by calling it wine. The un baptised and unsaved wait for the whiskey.

  26. - Irish - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 1:12 pm:

Attempts to wash stink out of State House are unsuccessful.

Madigan claims pipe that failed was a Red Pipe. Brady contends it was Blue.

Rod Blagojevich goes on Don and Roma show to contend that the pipe in question would have been fixed by his Capital Bill if it had been allowed to pass.

Gov. Christie says NJ will take water Illinois does not want. They are used to things floating in their drinking water.

  27. - Ron Burgundy - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 1:14 pm:

So now the Capitol is taking on water literally?

During the evacuation was the Capitol band playing “Nearer My Wallet to Thee” by any chance?

  28. - Irish - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 1:22 pm:

Gov. Quinn comments that criticism of tax increase from News outlets is just water under the table.

“Bighead Carp Found In State House Press Corps Area!! Film at 11:00!!”………….. Sorry, turns out to be floundering reporters.

  29. - WRMNpolitics - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 1:28 pm:

Shortly after the flooding began, Gov. Quinn was seen rushing to the statehouse and he attempted to use his skills to part the waters and lead his people out of the building.

  30. - Anon - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 1:35 pm:

That moldy smell is coming from the politicians that have been in Springfield for too long.

  31. - LisleMike - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 1:40 pm:

Hmmm..could it be a misunderstood prelude to Governor Quinn showing the press he can walk on water? No wait, that would be Speaker Madigan.

  32. - zatoichi - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 1:49 pm:

I love a strong moldy smell in the morning after a gentle rain. The smell, you know that smell, the whole office… Smelled like [sniffing, pondering]
victory. Someday this war’s gonna end…

  33. - Irish - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 1:57 pm:

Castastrophere averted!! Apples damaged in Statehouse flood were reporter’s laptops, not Speaker’s secret stash.

  34. - Bluefish - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 2:00 pm:

We’re just drowning in bad news out of the Capitol this week.

  35. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 2:01 pm:

Flush twice, its a long way to the Press Room.

  36. - Responsa - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 2:08 pm:

  40. - Rahm's Parking Meter - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 3:22 pm:

This is the first effects of the tax hike. A real life case of needed infrastructure improvements.

  41. - RFR - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 3:22 pm:

Despite budget cuts, annual Bathe the Reporter day proceeds as planned.

  42. - in Paris - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 3:29 pm:

I hate to throw cold water on the subject, BUT……………..

  43. - Rich Miller - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 3:31 pm:

    RFR wins.

  44. - Just The Way It Is One - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 3:49 pm:

I guess sometimes the “the last shall be first and the First..” (as in Amendment) “shall be last!” (or at least the paper or computer or phone-like gadgets they communicate on end up wet and nasty-smellin’)!!!

  45. - CircularFiringSquad - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 4:09 pm:

    RightGirl
The “tears” only fell on GOP offices…Senate House and Treasurer….maybe there is time for the to switch votes
Nice pix of Luke on the SJR website

  46. - vole - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 4:11 pm:

The medicinal cannabis advocates were passing the sensi calumet around the press room, set off the smoke detector and sprinkler system, and beat a paranoid retreat.

  47. - Wensicia - Friday, Jan 14, 11 @ 4:12 pm:

Taxpayers, in reaction to getting ‘hosed’ by state government, decided to return the favor.
