Take me out to the ball game

Wednesday, Mar 23, 2011 - Posted by Rich Miller

* I’m outta here for a few days, and, apparently, just in the nick of time. But my former intern Barton Lorimor will be handling blog duties starting tomorrow. He may do some work today. Go easy on him and stay reasonable in comments, please.

My wife asked me what I wanted for my birthday and I said that for as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to go to spring training. Since the GA is not in session this week, we’re doing it. My wife is not a baseball fan, but she does love her some Ozzie, so I promised that in exchange for tolerating six baseball games in five days I’d somehow find a way for us to meet the guy. The stalking begins tonight.

I leave you with this

Broke all the rules, played all the fools

Go Sox.

* This is a 2011 Chicago White Sox open thread.

Enjoy yourself Rich. You deserve some fun in the sun.

  11. - that's what the 13 is for - Wednesday, Mar 23, 11 @ 12:19 pm:

    Rich
crazy suggestion on finding Oswaldo-find out what bar he hangs out at-get there and buy him a drink-don’t buy him tequilla since I’ve seen him go ballistic with that one. he spent a good 1/2 hour bsing with my wife and Joey then signed her picture of them together from another event-great guy. Enjoy the start of this years WS winner’s season

    10th Ward,

This may interest you and others.

See how many miles Adam Dunn can hit a fastball in the thin Glendale air.

  18. - Anna - Wednesday, Mar 23, 11 @ 12:54 pm:

  20. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Mar 23, 11 @ 1:17 pm:

–See how many miles Adam Dunn can hit a fastball in the thin Glendale air.–

So far, he can’t hit the ball at all in Glendale.

    .208, 11 for 53, 1 dinger, 3 ribbies, 22 strikeouts.

That’s what spring training’s for, thankfully.

  21. - Because I say so - Wednesday, Mar 23, 11 @ 1:33 pm:

Our season tickets came in the mail yesterday, SO excited!

Ozzie tip, if you want a photo, get him outsied the bar. He said he doesn’t take pictures in the bar. Apparently he is protecting his image, ha!

  22. - Elmhurst - Wednesday, Mar 23, 11 @ 1:42 pm:

Be sure to head out to the facility in the morning, see if you can catch any of the non-game workouts. Maybe see the minor league camp. Really soke it in.

    Enjoy.

This is a 2011 Chicago White Sox open thread.

They’re doing baseball again this year? I thought all the cool kids were going on strike…

  24. - MJMspksman - Wednesday, Mar 23, 11 @ 2:57 pm:

Sunscreen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! dont want to see you red as an apple in the dome next week. As far as the Sox, Ozzie will find a way to kill Peavy and burn the bull pen>> Twins by 4 games>>>>>>>>>

  25. - Cincinnatus - Wednesday, Mar 23, 11 @ 3:38 pm:

The beauty of the upcoming football strike will be that we can follow the drive to the pennant.

  26. - prairiestatedem - Wednesday, Mar 23, 11 @ 4:13 pm:

Have a great time watching the games! As an official delegate of the Sox Caucus I fully expect an autographed Ozzie ball for a charitable auction the next time we meet!

  27. - BartonFanClub - Wednesday, Mar 23, 11 @ 4:17 pm:

    Happy to have Barton back!

  28. - Wensicia - Wednesday, Mar 23, 11 @ 4:42 pm:

Up here in Northern Lake County, I’d settle for Spring, forget about baseball. Have a good time, let me know what the sun looks like…

    Go Cubs!

  29. - x ace - Wednesday, Mar 23, 11 @ 4:46 pm:

Ozzie is off the wall and entertaining, but in that department he is far behind baseball’s most legendary , unique, and blunt broadcast duo who did the White Sox games from 77 thru 81. Harry Carey and Jimmie Piersall took no prisoners.

  30. - Barton Lorimor - Wednesday, Mar 23, 11 @ 5:01 pm:

Looks like there’s a new sheriff in town…

  31. - Walter Mitty - Wednesday, Mar 23, 11 @ 5:02 pm:

good for you, rich. can’t wait to get to the ballpark next month. A hotdog, burned on the side, extra onions…and no waiting three innings to use the bathroom. Comiskey is the best!

  32. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Mar 23, 11 @ 6:16 pm:

–The beauty of the upcoming football strike will be that we can follow the drive to the pennant.–

Cincy, we can always count on you to ignore facts and give it the old reactionary spin.

    It’s not a strike.

The football owners, in 2008, opted out of the collective bargaining agreement with the players that expired this month. It’s a lockout. You can look it up.

Ask any baseball player in the world, and they’ll tell you that the football players have the worst deal in professional team sports. I was at a function one time with Fergie Jenkins, Kenny Holtzman and Ron Santo and they couldn’t believe these entertainers, in a $9 billion industry, didn’t get more guarantees for risking their lifes, brains and limbs in their business.

As entertainers, I imagine SAG and AFTRA members would tell you the same thing.

  33. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Mar 23, 11 @ 9:22 pm:

Camelback is a great park. Just make sure you can get a seat on the first base side. The sun kills you if you’re sitting on the thrid base side. Or just sprawl out in the grass or under the umbrellas on either side. Enjoy.

  34. - Just saying.. - Wednesday, Mar 23, 11 @ 9:39 pm:

That song always gets me psyched, I cant sleep now.

  35. - Cincinnatus - Wednesday, Mar 23, 11 @ 11:31 pm:

You’re right, wordslinger. Since the union has been decertified, there really cannot be a strike.

  36. - Old Guard - Thursday, Mar 24, 11 @ 1:09 am:

Ozzy has no class what so ever. I would fire him in a min. No beef with sox, but Ozzy is a clown.

    Go Cards.

  37. - Bitterman - Thursday, Mar 24, 11 @ 9:13 am:

You ruined Thunder Struck for me.
