This just in… House remap posted
Friday, May 20, 2011 - Posted by Rich Miller * 10:11 am - The House Democrats have posted their new maps. * 10:20 am - Well, the Google Maps program was up when I did this post, but it’s down now. And I couldn’t figure out how to get the data before they took it down. Check back. * 10:22 am - * 10:27 am - OK, it disappeared again. It appears that we’re playing a little game of cat and mouse. I’ll just back off for a bit. Please post anything you see in comments. Go here for the announcement. Clear your cache every so often, however. * 10:55 am - A reader was able to download the HDems’ Google Earth file before it disappeared. I’ve now posted it. Click here for the file. One big caution: We’re not 100 percent sure yet whether this is the map they’ll formally release. Speaker Madigan’s spokesman denied knowing anything about the map release time. * According to this map (thanks to a commenter), it appears that GOP Reps. Ron Stephens and John Cavaletto are in the same district. * From a commenter…
* According to the map I have, GOP Reps. Dan Brady and Keith Sommer are both in the same district. * Again, according to the map I have, GOP Reps. Bill Mitchell and Chapin Rose are paired in the same district. * Another non-Google Earth workaround from a commenter…
* 11:49 am - Daily Herald…
* From the AP…
It’s most certainly a gigantic distraction. * 12:01 pm - Via a commenter and double-checked with the Google Earth map I have, GOP Reps. Randy Ramey and Franco Coladipietro have been put into the same House district. * 12:04 pm - Again, via a commenter and double-checked, the map I have puts GOP Rep. Tim Schmitz and Mike Fortner together. * Two good points from a friend…
* Posted in comments by Yellow Dog Democrat…
* 12:30 pm - I’m told (can’t say by whom) that this map we have is “99.9 percent accurate.” The district pairings we have so far are right. The only differences between this map and the “real” map are extremely minor and don’t impact things like which member is in what district. But, keep in mind, this is not a legal copy. * 12:38 pm - Drew Veeneman at PrecinctMaps.com told us in comments that he’s created some pdf files with county and township outlines… * 1:18 pm - Daily Herald…
* 1:57 pm - I’ve been told that the map we have almost perfectly matches up with the Senate district map.

- Emanuel Collective - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:17 am:
I seem to get a map of the state, but nothing else. Anyone else having this problem?
- Nikoli - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:17 am:
Rich, do you know if the House Dems plan on releasing a Google Earth version as well? Their site is loading painfully slow, I assume because of all of the traffic it’s getting.
- GrundyCounty - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:18 am:
I’m having the same problem maybe they are waiting till the committee gets out to put the layer on it?
- Nikoli - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:19 am:
@Emanuel: I’m not seeing any district boundaries either.
- Mark Buerhle - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:19 am:
it worked right away and then it stopped…
- Rahm's Parking Meter - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:20 am:
Yes, I am not seeing anything either.
- Kyle HIllman - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:20 am:
Yeah.. not showing a map..
Error establishing a database connection
Must be all of the IL GOP Reps.. logging in to see.
- Cincinnatus - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:22 am:
“We’re sorry, that page was not found - Error 404″
Rich, did you manage any screen grabs before the map was taken down?
- Kyle HIllman - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:22 am:
Also whoever is manning their website should change their permalinks to something more SEO friendly than ?page_id=470
- Cincinnatus - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:24 am:

- Apple - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:25 am:
The original link is working. Just very sluggish.
- Jasper - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:26 am:
I was able to take a look. The City lakefront districts are really pathetic. Long skinny districts that make petitions a pain (there is really no central area where all the people live in the same district). And my area on the north side is a tiny spec in a southside district.
Winners draw the maps, but this one even offends people on the side of the winners. I may vote Dem, but I’m tired of voting for Dems that ignore my neighhborhood.
- Solomon - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:26 am:
What is this, Geocities? They hit their bandwidth cap in 10 minutes…
- Apple - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:27 am:
Must be because I opened it right away and didn’t close the window. I can’t open it a new tab, but have it in the original one.
- Rich Miller - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:28 am:
Apple, is there any way you can save it to your hard drive?
- Rich Miller - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:28 am:
apple, see if you can do some screen grabs. email them to me at capitolfax@aol.com. Thanks
- Solomon - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:29 am:
Yeah, stick it in a Dropbox or something.
- former forgottonian - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:30 am:
Looks like Tracy and Hammond are in the same district, the 93rd, leaving the 94th open.
- TD - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:30 am:
Didn’t work on my PC, but I have it up on my iPad. It’s like doing a puzzle figuring out which two House districts go together for comparison to yesterday’s map.
- Cincinnatus - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:32 am:
It’s taking a bit longer than expected for the stonecutters to carve the map into granite. I love technology.
- Realist - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:33 am:
It looks like McCarthy and Kosel have been lumped together.
- Solomon - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:34 am:
@former forgottonian
Tracy has two homes. She’s moving to Quincy. They won’t be in the same district.
- former forgottonian - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:35 am:
Ahh, my mistake. Thanks.
- JD - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:35 am:
Not sure if this is the final proposal, but they have a few kmz files at this directory: http://ilhousedems.com/redistricting/2011-maps/House_Bill_3760_Proposed_Districtsx/
There’s one named 526 and one named 530 …
- JD - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:36 am:
They also have a 518 version saved here: http://ilhousedems.com/redistricting/2011-maps/House_Bill_3760x/
- Realist - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:36 am:
Scratch that last remark. Looks like McCarthy will be in dist. 35 and Kosel in Dist. 37
- Realist - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:38 am:
The kmz files work for my google earth, looks like the same map as online
- Cincinnatus - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:46 am:
Can one of the people who have managed to get the map open determine what the filename of the Google Earth map is? Might be able to find an alternate path to see the maps.
- Realist - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:47 am:
It’s the one named “ab9Plan0530.kmz”

Just saying…..
- Cincinnatus - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:56 am:
To bad this is a Friday. I don’t think these servers will allow us to look at these maps today. See you on Monday, I guess.
How did the Senate manage to do the same thing as the House and allow us all to see things right away? Maybe the House guru should walk a couple of hundred feet and ask a pointed question…
- Kyle HIllman - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 10:57 am:
Using that file, I don’t see anything different in the 7th Senate drawing from the House Combined 13 14
- Rich Miller - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 11:01 am:
Cincinnatus, refresh this page.
- Tamale - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 11:02 am:

ah HA - right click save to desktop open in google earth.. don’t click it.
- TD - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 11:09 am:
Here’s a strange workaround, but a way to view that Google Earth file without a download.
1) Go to http://maps.google.com
2) In the “Search Maps” box paste this crazy URL: “http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=211224011660062925886.0004a3b72e644ab4953c3&start=1&num=20000&ll=41.389173,-89.165039&spn=2.299578,4.224243&z=8&output=kml” and hit Search Maps
- John Galt - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 11:10 am:
Do they have corresponding PDF files too like the Senate?
- 47th Ward - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 11:11 am:
I thought at first this was another bedsheet ballot, just one big statewide district and 118 seats up for grabs.
- John Galt - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 11:15 am:
Thanks TD.
FWIW, from a quick & dirty look at the map, it seems like it’s corresponding w/ the map the Senate released. i.e., simply nested the House districts within the proposed Senate map, rather than offer a totally unique map w/ different Senate & House districts….
If that’s the case, it’d boost the likelyhood that this is the official release & that there’s buy-in from Democratic leaders in both chambers.
- someonehastosayit - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 11:18 am:
If I am not mistaken, this map puts Roger Eddy and David Reis in the same district.

Scratch that about Eddy and Reis…they appear to be separate.
- OneMan - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 11:24 am:

- 60611 - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 11:25 am:
As Jasper noted above, downtown Chicago (Near North, West Loop, and South Loop) easily has enough population for at least 1 House district — and that’s the part of the city that’s actually growing. Assuming that Google link is the correct map (and the Senate maps yesterday already showed this was going to happen), the downtown/42nd ward is again divided into 4 districts. That’s disappointing. This allows Reps. Dunkin, DuBuclet, and Currie — who live within 2 miles of one another on the south side to each have their own district.
- Meier's Half Full Glass - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 11:25 am:
No, Reis is in Jasper and Eddy in Crawford County. They will have their own with a new Senator (Righter).
- Chris Wetterich - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 11:29 am:
Seems like there’s no House district numbers on this map. Anyone else having that problem? I see Senate district numbers, but not House.
- Tamale - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 11:31 am:
Excellent stuff, Rich! Thanks so much for finding this for us, and the teamwork of everyone on here. Nice work.
- Meier's Half Full Glass - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 11:33 am:
Mine is the same; no House numbers. Also appears that Keith Sommer and Dan Brady are in the same District, not to mention Bill Mitchell and Chapin Rose being drawn together(sans a Senator) with Jason Barickman getting a new, much more southern district…
- TD - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 11:34 am:
Ela: good find, that link is much easier
- Rolln' - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 11:42 am:
I know it was posted yesterday that it looks like the remap will be tough for Sam McCann, but what do you think about Wayne Rosenthal in the 95th? He wouldn’t have Springfield and Decatur, which I assumed were the more liberal parts of McCann’s new district.
- IN THE KNOW - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 11:47 am:
Meier’s Half. No Sommer should be in with Brauer and Brady is by himself.
- Tamale - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 11:50 am:

New, empty district in Kane County. Looks like they pushed Schmitz and Fortner together.
- Tamale - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 11:55 am:
Sorry to ask a noob question, but do Congressional Districts typically follow House District lines? Do they have to? Or are they decoupled?
- The fightin 55th - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 11:56 am:
Ramey and Franco have been drawn together
- Meier's Half Full Glass - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 12:02 pm:
In the Know: I have Sommer living in Morton, which includes Dan Brady’s part of Bloomington. Of course, either one could move over to Cultra’s Senate District, which has no reps.
- Nearly Normal - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 12:02 pm:
Based on present home addresses Sommer would be in the new 88 (Morton) and Dan Brady in the new 105 since he lives on the far east side of Bloomington. Brauer would be in the new 87th.
- Yellow Dog Democrat - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 12:07 pm:
The 112th District got a nice haircut that will benefit Jay Hoffman, if he decides to run again.
Dunlap Lake, Holiday Shores, and Prairietown have been shaved off. Those were republican-leaning precincts in Kay’s base.
If Jay was only thinking about running before, he’s in now.
- Nearly Normal - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 12:08 pm:
Meier’s is right Dan Brady is in the same district as Sommer. Move Dan, we want you in the 105th.
- Team Sleep - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 12:10 pm:
Rollin’, I wouldn’t say Springfield and Decatur are “more liberal” by any stretch of the imagination. Decatur especially trended very hard R in the last election cycle. Bobby Schilling cleaned Phil Hare’s clock in Decatur, and Kyle McCarter outperformed expectations after pundits initially predicted Tim Dudley would win Decatur.

Interesting China Town gets lumped into a slightly more South focused Acevedo District 2.
- Will - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 12:18 pm:
Looking at central and western IL, this appears to be a map designed to limit the number of downstate Democrats. It creates super Democratic districts that will be easy to defend in places where they easily could have created two winnable Democratic-leaning districts instead of one.
Ex. Springfield - Decatur. Rock Island/Moline. Champaign/Urbana.
This is a good map for downstate Republicans.
- anon - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 12:26 pm:

Similar to what 60611 said, it could very well be that next year, someone driving from a Bears game at Soldier Field back to the suburbs would go through 4 (yes, four) different House Districts by the time they passed the old post office!!!!
- Meier's Half Full Glass - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 12:42 pm:
Will: I totally agree. I had heard that Madigan wanted to focus on the larger cities, and this map seems to prove that out.

Hoffman has said publicly he fully intends to run again. No doubt that district was shaped up to bring him back.

- Chicago Bars - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 12:50 pm:
Hey 60611,
Can’t have all that population growth in the Loop/River North lumped into one district. A district that cohesive and affluent could end up a stronghold/fundraising powerhouse for an ambitious dem.
Or maybe based on the average Rush & Division Viagra Triangle resident it would go republican.
Horrifying prospect either way.
- phocion - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 12:53 pm:
Looks like they put a hit on Saviano. Might be tough for him to win in his new “home” district that includes big chunks of Oak Park and Austin. Or it could be Camille Lilly might have the tough race on her hands - still a lot of Elmwood Park , River Grove and Franklin Park in the new 78th. Hope I’m reading this right.
- John Galt - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 1:01 pm:
What’s the likelyhood that these are just totally bogus maps to create voting leverage over the GOP for the next few weeks?
- Oswego Willy - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 1:01 pm:
phocion -
I agree on the Saviano observation. Saviano will need big numbers in River Grove and Franklin Park (FP has been leaning Dem for a while, but always went well for Saviano), and he needs “turnout” in EP … as for the Oak Park and city side, those are not “Good” precincts for Saviano, they are very heavy Dem … right now is a wash… tough road, but this might be the first time since Geoff Obrzut that Saviano will have to really hump in that district.
On a side note, Harmon and Saviano have worked very close together, so it would not suprise me to see a “Harmon/Saviano” palm card, and Harmon helping Saviano in areas in Oak Park. Just a thought.
- phocion - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 1:04 pm:
oswego willy-
Harmon/Saviano? I’d vote for both of ‘em!
- Oswego Willy - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 1:09 pm:
phicion -
I had heard they have done similar in the past, their “district/s” like the two of them, and it has been no secret thay have worked together, the rub in this “love fest” will be the pressure MJM might put on Harmon if the HDEMs run a credible candidate in that district to take Saviano out.
Just an intersting map with the Saviano/MJM/Harmon connection. A “Ground Game” race in that House Seat for sure!
- Yellow Dog Democrat - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 1:18 pm:
In some ways, this is a good map for Tom Cross.
First, his district appears to have been spared.
Secondly, he was always going to be in the minority, but redrawing the map with fewer downstate GOP districts ensures he remains minority LEADER.
- 10th ward - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 1:18 pm:
No INCUMBENT in the “new” 65th? Ramey may move west?

And, I’ll add, ensures the winners of those seats are loyal to him.
- Yellow Dog Democrat - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 1:21 pm:
@Oswego -
Saviano is Cross’s money man. MJM doesn’t have to beat him to beat him, just keep him sufficiently busy.
PLUS, all these GOP primaries have a tendency to drain the coffers for a cycle or two.
- Yellow Dog Democrat - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 1:22 pm:
Saviano and Mathias should just switch parties.
- Oswego Willy - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 1:25 pm:
YDD,
You are right about that, thus the dynamic of the Harmon/MJM situation. If Madigan wants to keep Saviano busy, MJM is not going to be too pleased if out in the open and early on Saviano can feel comfortable east of Harlem Avenue and into Oak Park. I agree with you YDD, i just didn’t get into why I the trio make it interesting in all its ways.

Chicago Bars — that’s a good idea I hadn’t considered (the fundraising powerhouse point). We’re not voting Republican though, I promise.

60611 is quite correct. Yes, living downtown I can feel the squeeze, but there is no way anyone could get a Republicon district via any manipulation of these lines there. Think upper middle class progressives.
Sure, maybe 15 to 25% (in a very good year) GOP votes in 2nd and 42nd (throw in 27th also) wards that comprise these areas. No more than that.
- Rich Miller - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 2:31 pm:
===Sure, maybe 15 to 25% (in a very good year) GOP votes in 2nd and 42nd===
Mark Kirk got 43 percent in the 42nd ward.
- LouisXIV - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 2:36 pm:
Loop and South Loop are totally screwed by this map. What about keeping communities together?
- Jasper - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 2:39 pm:
Squeezed out: There is a lot of money in 42. In an off year, a Republican definitely could have a chance.
But the real impact is not Dem/GOP. Even with the affluence, it probably still is Dem.
What matters is that a heck of a lot of people in that area who vote Dem would prefer a Dem like Brendan Reilly — a Dem who cares about the budget. Think Ken Dunkin cares about whether people in River North have to pay higher taxes? And whoever ends up in Will Burns’s district (yeah, I know somebody was appointed by anybody can win next year) will not give the north end of that district (or the taxes people in that area pay) much thought either.
- Pot calling kettle - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 2:41 pm:
==Sure, maybe 15 to 25% (in a very good year) GOP votes in 2nd and 42nd==

Pot you need to look at a map of the 42nd Ward. Cabrini Green is gone. There are few places where housing is even moderately priced. The vast majority is upscale condos and luxury apartments. A ton of turnover too to go along with the money of the residents. If the GOP cannot do well in the 42nd Ward, they can’t do it anywhere. Saying Kirk did well in 42 is not saying he’s a Dem by any means.
- Rich Miller - Friday, May 20, 11 @ 2:57 pm:
===Therefore, Mark Kirk is a Democrat. ===

–Looking at central and western IL, this appears to be a map designed to limit the number of downstate Democrats. It creates super Democratic districts that will be easy to defend in places where they easily could have created two winnable Democratic-leaning districts instead of one.–
The ISRA is going to love that.
Skip might have to work harder in Oak Park precincts, but there’s a lot of cross-pollination across North Avenue already. I’m sure he’ll have the St. Giles crowd pounding doors for him — and you don’t see anyone pounding doors for Republicans in Oak Park right now.

A Republican state rep for Oak Park! Love it!! It’ll do that town good.

People, Saviano represented Oak Park in the 1990s.

Yep, Saviano had 4 precints in that 1992 Map … he is not “new” to Oak Park …
