Question of the day

Tuesday, Oct 11, 2011 - Posted by Rich Miller

* The Sox and Cubs had miserable seasons. The Bears were horrible last night. The NBA has canceled the first two weeks of the season. The Blackhawks ain’t what they used to be.

* The Question: Now what, sports fans?

  1. - Searching for Otto Kerner - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 1:23 pm:

The University of Illinois football team is 6-0 for the first time since 1951. Play Hard, Fighting Illini!

  2. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 1:24 pm:

The Illini are undefeated so far. So there’s that. But yeah, the sports scene looks especially bleak these days.

Wait, I think the Bears just got hit with another false start.

  3. - Answer - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 1:26 pm:

Time to book a bandwagon ticket. Now available on Expedia, Travelocity, and all websites that offer fan destinations that do not include sports teams in this state.

  4. - Ahoy - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 1:27 pm:

    Go Cardinals!

  5. - 10th ward - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 1:30 pm:

    GO PACK!!

  6. - vise77 - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 1:30 pm:

Glad I wasn’t raised here in Chicago, as my wife and I are having a wonderful October, one of the best in memory even though we back different teams (Cards, Brewers and Pack).

  7. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 1:30 pm:

    10th, that’s NOT an option.

  8. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 1:33 pm:

That Wisconsin-Illinois game in Champaign is looking pretty big right now.

You can’t go wrong with college football at any level, but Big Ten games are a blast. The bands, the kids, the fans, and the games are pretty good, too. Make a day of it in Evanston or Champaign and it’s well worth your while.

However, I think the consulting firm that billed the Big Ten $250,000 for the “Leaders” and “Legends” names should be taxed out of existence.

  9. - bored now - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 1:36 pm:

i don’t know, i think it’s hard for midwesterners to complain atm. st louis, milwaukee and detroit are all in the LCS and detroit and green bay are playing exceptional football, and so is wisconsin and the fightin’ illini! we’ve always known that the bears o-line was suspect (but, for some reason, we like to blame the quarterback!).

the bears ain’t the dolphins. i’m licking my wounds, here. you’ve won a game, so…

  10. - cover - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 1:36 pm:

The Blackhawks still made the playoffs last season, albeit barely, and pushed the eventual conference champs to an overtime game 7. They should be a bit better than 8th in the conference this season, and I think they have a legitimate chance of advancing past the first round of the playoffs. That said, I don’t expect them to win the Stanley Cup, or even the Clarence Campbell Trophy.

I think the Bears will be an 8-8 team this year. It’s a decent team that is currently outclassed by two other teams in the division. They had better draft another offensive lineman in the first round of next year’s draft, neither Cutler nor Forte will ever put up decent stats until the O-line improves.

  12. - I'm Just Saying - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 1:37 pm:

Rich, I think with some of the changes, the Blackhawks may be better, and I wouldnt’ surprised to see them int eh Conference Finals, they finally have folks who can protect Sharpie, Kaner and Toews, i’m very optimistic about this season…..

  13. - Thoughts... - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 1:40 pm:

-That Wisconsin-Illinois game in Champaign is looking pretty big right now.-

Word - I’d be careful looking past OSU this weekend. They may be 3-3, but this is still the Illini were talking about…and I say that as an alum

  14. - walkinfool - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 1:41 pm:

The Hawks should be substantially better than last year. It’s awfully early to write them off.

  15. - CircularFiringSquad - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 1:42 pm:

Focus like a laser on the StL Cardinals
    Nice try.
Capt Fax tries to water down Cardinal by preetending that anyone real cares that the Bears sux and the NBA is canceled.
Besides PQ is likely to sign th gaming bill and IL will become the permanent home for Breeders Cup and Hamiltonian
    GO CARDS

  16. - Ben - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 1:44 pm:

    Go Cards, Go Illini!

  17. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 1:50 pm:

Cricket? Curling? Polo on miniature ponies? Squash? Professional Jai Alai?

  18. - Cubs - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 1:52 pm:

Obviously, it’s time to drink…it must be 5 o’clock somewhere!

  19. - PaGo - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 1:53 pm:

At this point, Illinois isn’t looking past anyone. They are better than THE OSU. Zook better have a good plan. And don’t write the Bears off. Hawks will be fine. Isn’t it a 24 month season? Who cares about basketball? I did until all this crud.

What now you ask? College football, baby. It’s the best product out there. Gambling makes it even more fun!

  20. - Louis G. Atsaves - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 1:54 pm:

    Bowling!

  21. - just sayin' - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 1:55 pm:

The Illini will tank now that they are in the difficult part of their schedule. The Blackhawks will return to being an elite member of the NHL and help get us thru the winter months.Sox fans will have a dificult post season as they watch Kenny Williams dismantle this team one by one. Say goodbye to Buehrle, then Quentin, then Pierre, then Danks….

  22. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 2:00 pm:

    GO CARDS! GO BLUES!

  23. - View from the Cheap Seats - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 2:08 pm:

It was painful watching the Bears last night. The offensive line was pitiful, they were just standing there not even blocking. And the false start’s…C’mon Man.

  24. - Ron Burgundy - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 2:09 pm:

As a Cards fan and an Illini alum, things are looking pretty good right now. What’s next? Hopefully a World Series and a New Year’s bowl game.

  25. - Stones - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 2:12 pm:

I think the Hawks and Bulls have potential albeit a shortened season for the latter. For the most part I am hoping that Boardwalk Empire has an exciting season.

  26. - dupage dan - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 2:13 pm:

I’m with 10th ward - it seems as tho the only thing the Packers have to fear is the Detroit Lions - amazing.

Up in the northern part of Illinois I am no longer surprised at seeing the number of cars w/Illinois plates sportin’ the Green & Gold.

    GoPackGo!

  32. - Stan - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 2:43 pm:

If you think the Blackhawks aren’t what they used to be (one season removed from the stanley cup) then you clearly don’t follow hockey. They’re the favorites this year.

  33. - siriusly - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 2:49 pm:

College basketball starts in a few weeks.

  34. - Baines 4 Prez - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 2:50 pm:

Yeah, you’re very ignorant on the Blackhawks here Rich, they should be very good & entertaining to watch this year. After the Cup they had to cut loose a lot of salary, but they had a ton of young guys in the pipeline…they just weren’t ready to come up yet. Now those players are going to be slowly filtering in, and with the core that we have all under contract, should be very good.

Stan, I’ll believe it when I see it. Do you know how many pre-season “favorites” ultimately end up winning in any sport?

  39. - John Etheredge - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 3:09 pm:

Is anyone concerned about the NBA regular season being canceled? The regular season is like the pre-season in football. Yick.

  40. - Ghost - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 3:17 pm:

its time to recognize the Dodgeball legaue as the last real true great american sport. No million dollar babies in that game :)

    Illinois….Chicago’s Big Ten Team.

  43. - Thoughts... - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 3:41 pm:

-Zook better have a good plan-

Yep, and that’s exactly why I’m worried about OSU…and anyone who thinks the Illini actually has more talent than them is fooling themselves. I’m cautiously optimistic but more inclined to agree with just sayin’. They’ve broken my heart too many times to really believe.

  44. - sal-says - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 3:44 pm:

    “Now what, sports fans?”

Quit being sports fans of every Chicago sports team?

  54. - titan - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 4:56 pm:

The Blackhawks will be back in the hunt this season. No one can ever say with certainty that any hockey is a lock for the Cup, but the Hawks will be a strong contender this season.

  55. - Tough Guy - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 5:19 pm:

All things are good here in Central Illinois with the Cardinals and Fighting Illini. But then again we Cardinal fans are used to it.

  56. - Just Asking - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 5:42 pm:

Doesn’t it seem like the W’Sox are 4 sale?

  57. - Norseman - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 6:11 pm:

The latest news has it that the NFL ok’d the sale of Packer stock. Get yourself a share and be a proud owner of a quality football team. Go Pack Go!

  58. - zatoichi - Tuesday, Oct 11, 11 @ 7:59 pm:

The 7th and 8th grade football teams I coach just finished a combined 11-3 season. Far more fun on the sidelines than in the seats watching. Pro sports - yawn. Now time for some serious weight loss over the winter.

–Doesn’t it seem like the W’Sox are 4 sale?–

Only if Reinsdorf can hit the Wayback Button to about 1950 and buy the Brooklyn Dodgers and Ebbets Field. That would make for one happy Erasmus High grad.

Speaking of Erasmus High grads, Al Davis, RIP. Just win, baby.
