* Oy…
Rep. Bobby Schilling is being asked to “lay low’’ after an online threat that offered a $75,000 reward for his assassination exploded across the Internet, a Quad Cities TV station reported late Wednesday.
The Colona Republican learned about the threat via a Google alert Tuesday night. It’s being investigated by Capitol police and the FBI, WQAD-TV reported.
“I’m supposed to kind of lay low, not really go out in public,” Schilling told the station.
The email states: ‘’I will pay $75,000 for ASSASSINATING Illinois Congresswoman (sic) Bobby Schilling and any US Congressman, US Senator and FBI, CIA and NSA DIRECTORS and their FAMILY MEMBERS regardless of their age.’’
Schilling said he’s been told that the California man making the threat has a history of this type of behavior.
‘’I’m pretty concerned. My wife is very concerned. It’s a general threat to all members of Congress, but they specifically called my name out in the threat,” he told the station.
By using that quote in the article, I was able to find similar online threats made by this nutball. The Schilling threat appears to have been deleted [UPDATE: Here it is], but there are others, including one against Congressman Joe Walsh, which has also been taken down.
* Most of the state’s Republican delegation has been threatened by this guy, using the same, exact message…
I will pay $75,000 for ASSASSINATING Illinois Congresswoman Donald Manzullo
and any US Congressman, any US Senator and FBI, CIA and NSA
DIRECTORS and their FAMILY MEMBERS regardless of their age.

Congressmen Aaron Schock, John Shimkus and Tim Johnson have also been threatened the same way.
I doubt that any of the congressmen have much to worry about, but it’s unnerving that somebody like this is walking around free. Let’s be careful out there.
…Adding… More searches have turned up additional threats against the rest of the state’s GOP delegation. He’s also threatened lots of others.

Why hasn’t this guy been arrested? He may be a nut, but sometimes nuts follow through.
- Lil' Enchilada - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 9:12 am:
What bothered me on about the WQAD report was that Congressman Schilling was at a restaurant, having breakfast with his friends and being interviewed about “staying low”. Something seemed very wrong with the picture. The restaurant had big glass windows everywhere. If I was going to lay low I would not be out for pancakes.
- Downstate Illinois - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 9:19 am:
Back in the 90s some crazy nutjob showed up at various public meetings in Williamson County handing out flyers showing his “proof” of a conspiracy involving the Masons and other various persons.
He apparently seemed harmless. No one had him arrested.
A week or so later on Election Day he started shooting up a Herrin polling place that was in the Masonic Hall, then went to Herrin City Hall, then on his way to Marion, shot up another polling place at the Shriners, before finally ending up at the courthouse.
Unless he’s dead, he’s still at the mental health facility for the criminally insane that Quinn wants to close.
- just sayin' - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 9:20 am:
Ridiculous. For starters you know the guy doesn’t even have 75 grand. But in light of history, no nutjob can be ignored I suppose.
Note though how R officials here love to play the victim.

{I doubt that any of the congressmen have much to worry about}
That’s what Gabrielle Giffords thought too.
Perhaps a conceal and carry permit for Congressman Schilling would be in order
- Aldyth - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 9:33 am:
Jared Loughner is a nutjob and look what he did. I’d take the FBI’s advice seriously.
- Secret Square - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 9:37 am:
Does this nutcase target ONLY Republicans or is he a bipartisan nutcase?
- wordslinger - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 9:41 am:
–Perhaps a conceal and carry permit for Congressman Schilling would be in order–
Under Arizona law, Jared Loughner did not need a conceal-and-carry permit. He purchased his Glock 19 with extended 30-round magazine, legally. He carried his Glock 19, legally. He shot Rep. Gifford and 17 others, killing six, including a federal judge and a 9-year-old girl.

I’m always amused by the extraordinary governmental competence and efficiency that is the foundation of goofy conspiracy theories.

(some emphasis added)
At the risk of parsing the ravings of a madman, doesn’t the word “any” mean that this was a threat against the entire Illinois delegation regardless of party and the entire Congress regardless of state?

- JL - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 10:02 am:
During the 2010 campaign, a militia group sent a letter threatening our candidate and his staff if he did not immediately resign. This was before the Giffords shooting and it was still very unnerving.I think all of these have to be taken very seriously no matter what.
- Rich Miller - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 10:03 am:
MrJM, you are correct. While he named Republicans, he put out a hit on everybody. Those who attempt to make this some sort of a partisan issue would not only be wrong, but silly.
- Bemused - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 10:15 am:
I have to go with wordslinger on this one. This is not someone riding thru the streets yelling ” The King is a Fink”. The guy is really unhinged.
Now if one of us were to post such rantings I suspect within hours of hitting the send button a few nice guys would be at our doorstep. How is he not in some institution.
I won’t go into the gun aspect of this as it has been beat to death.
- Rich Miller - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 10:19 am:
===Now if one of us were to post such rantings I suspect within hours of hitting the send button a few nice guys would be at our doorstep.===
You are correct. I’ve called the coppers about a tiny handful of threats left in comments. I don’t mess around.
- Loop Lady - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 10:19 am:
Ok Rich, here’s different way of saying what you deleted…a healthy political discourse is bedrock for a free and civil society…the notion that “if you don’t agree with me you’re not worth talking to” is throwing our entire political and economic system in the crapper…more of this to come if political leadership on both sides of the aisle don’t step up and/or the electorate demands it…
- dupage dan - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 10:26 am:
If someone is seriously disturbed and wants to harm another person it is very hard to stop that action. Doesn’t matter what type of weapon, bombs are not hard to make and can be more devestating than a firearm. A threat such as this should be taken seriously and should be investigated quickly and the madman caught and prosecuted, or otherwise dealt with. People in the public eye, politicians being in that group, are more likely to be targeted and we must make sure these threats are investigated quickly.

**–Perhaps a conceal and carry permit for Congressman Schilling would be in order–

Perhaps avoiding making silly gun control talking points over this would be in order.
- Cincinnatus - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 10:33 am:
Somehow, this is the Tea Party’s fault. Or maybe Sarah Palin.
Find this nut and toss him in the clink.
- Wensicia - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 10:40 am:
It’s not just this guy, it’s the other angry lunatics out there who will pick up on this kind of message and possibly do great harm. I’m against censorship, but there should be a way to stop this kind of messaging and prosecute the instigators.
- Bill F. - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 11:20 am:
It’s unclear to me why this guy is not institutionalized — either in prison or a high-security mental institution. The threat level is probably low, but any threat against an elected official should be treated seriously.
- 47th Ward - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 11:29 am:
===Somehow, this is the Tea Party’s fault. Or maybe Sarah Palin.===
What’s that supposed to mean? I think you’re the only one making that very large leap Cinci. Lunatics come in all shapes and sizes and from all political spectrums. It’s just as likely this nutjob is a LaRouche follower.
He offered a bounty for both Dick Cheney and Sasha Obama. Hard to tell what his political views are other than he’s batsh*t crazy.
- wordslinger - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 11:33 am:

I don’t see that anyone, anywhere, made such a suggestion. Don’t be a Professional Victim, dude.

I’m be willing to bet that the poster doesn’t have $75k - but there is still a danger from the other nuts who might see the posting and act on it.
- soccermom - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 11:55 am:
I don’t see that this threat is partisan in nature, and I don’t see any value in trying to make partisan hay from a very disturbed individual.
- Stones - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 12:38 pm:
This kind of stuff happens more often than people think. It sounds like this guy needs to be committed.
- Greg Anderstein - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 1:02 pm:
And no one notices the hundreds of other ones not taken down yet?

He made threats against Bush and Cheney a couple months ago–I’m mostly surprised he’s not been put in the nice padded cell already. But my sympathy to Schilling and his family. While it may not be likely, these sorts of things are very unnerving especially when they involve you kids.
- Ghost of John Brown - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 2:00 pm:
Rich,
You are right about this not being a partisan issue. If you look at his profile, he’s been talking about killing people for years. Bush, Obama, Cheney, M. Obama, Biden, etc., etc., etc. His posts go back to at least 2006, mostly screaming about killing politicians and the CIA. I don’t have any idea why someone hasn’t found this nut since he’s been doing this for at least five years.
- Holdingontomywallet - Thursday, Oct 20, 11 @ 7:21 pm:
Just saying - “Note though how R officials here love to play the victim.
Take your partisan goggles off for a change. You don’t need to find a reason to bash the GOP on every subject…take a breath. We get it, you can’t stand the GOP, duely noted.
