Friday, Feb 17, 2012 - Posted by Rich Miller

* It’s Friday before yet another three-day weekend. My back hurts for the first time in years. [Pain now gone.] Gov. Pat Quinn is in California, so we won’t have much news from him. The Chicago Tribune editorial page hat-tipped me this morning and I’ve got mixed emotions about it. Plus, I overslept and I have something in my eye that I can’t seem to rinse out.

But Nicky Hopkins’ piano work and Charlie Watts’ magnificent drumming on this tune can cheer any mood

I’m the man that brings you roses when you ain’t got none

Needless to say, we’re gonna have a light posting schedule today. I’ll have something of substance up in a bit. Until then, consider this a Friday open thread.

The Trib hat tip was nice, but don’t you own the trademark on Quinncidence?

  2. - Rich Miller - Friday, Feb 17, 12 @ 8:47 am:

    No, that’s theirs I think.

Did some pushups and some stretching and the back pain has disappeared. But thanks.

  7. - largemammal - Friday, Feb 17, 12 @ 9:07 am:

Rich, you need to hear “Bad Luck is All I Have” by Eddie Harris, but I don’t have a link handy.

  12. - wordslinger - Friday, Feb 17, 12 @ 9:25 am:

On top of paying Ron Zook $2.6 million not to coach football the next couple of years, looks like U of I soon will be paying Bruce Weber $3.9 million not to coach basketball the next three years.

You knew Weber had trouble locking down top Illinois high school players when his top prospect, Illinois Mr. Basketball Jon Scheyer of Glenbrook North, announced he was going to Duke — despite the facts that the Illini were playing in the national championship that week and Weber’s brother was Scheyer’s high school coach. Ouch.

Watch for another Illinois player who passed on the Illini, Oak Park River Forest High School’s Iman Shumpert, in next week’s NBA Slam-Dunk contest. The first round draft choice of the Knicks, Shumpert will be assisted by international phenom Jeremy Lin.

How many Weber recruits have made the NBA, by the way?

  13. - Leroy - Friday, Feb 17, 12 @ 9:26 am:

Amber Ale at Obed and Isaac has been known to be a preventative measure for back pain.

  14. - Rich Miller - Friday, Feb 17, 12 @ 9:32 am:

Leroy, haven’t tried it yet. How is the place?

  15. - Leroy - Friday, Feb 17, 12 @ 9:35 am:

They’ve done great with the interior. The beer is good, haven’t dabbled much with the menu.

  16. - TCB - Friday, Feb 17, 12 @ 9:39 am:

    Wordslinger-

The days of griping about Weber’s recruiting abilities should be in the past. Ever since the Eric Gordon fiasco (and the hiring of Jerrance Howard as his recruiting assistant) Weber has done a fine job recruiting. Weber went out & got solid Illinois recruits in Richmond, Richardson, Paul, Leonard, Abrams & Mike Shaw in the last few years. Sure he missed out on some Illinois studs like Sam Thompson & Shumpert, but recruiting has not been Weber’s problem of late. His problem is maximizing the talents of his players & getting them to perform at the level of which they are capable.

All of these guys are solid recruits, yet none of them play to their potential & none of them seem to be getting any better (hell, Richardson seems to be getting worse by the year). Just look at his post-game interview Wednesday night, it was spot on. He was very honest with the media (maybe too honest) about what the problem with this team is & he was exactly right. I like Weber, he seems like a nice guy, but I think it’s become brutally obvious that he is nothing more than a mid-major coach.

“A tip of the hat to Rich Miller’s Capitolfax.com and to Illinois Republicans for the first two items.”
OMG Capt Fax all they did was credit you with holding on to a press release….don’t get carried away that the bankrupt Tribbies think you really did something worthwhile.
We are guessing you got your head stuck in a barrel of silly sauce last night to ease the back attack
If necessary we would be happy to guest you at the downtown Y next week to further treat teh condition. Steam room can help.

  18. - things that make you go hmm - Friday, Feb 17, 12 @ 9:53 am:

Strange, both you and Detective Shaved have a music break on your blog on the same day. I’m just saying…….

  19. - PublicServant - Friday, Feb 17, 12 @ 10:17 am:

Yeah, push-ups and stretching help me with my back pain, mainly by making other parts of my body hurt so badly that the new pain obscures the back pain. Ya can’t win.

  20. - Stones - Friday, Feb 17, 12 @ 10:25 am:

I love that you post Stones Vid’s often Rich but can we get a little “Waiting on a Friend” one of these days. Maybe not their best or most popular work but something about that song reminds me of warm weather and summertime.

  21. - dupage dan - Friday, Feb 17, 12 @ 10:29 am:

ChiTrib reports CPS union will ask for 30% raise over 2 years - not specifically linked to but likely in response to the 90 minute addition to the school day. While the “math” might work out in raw terms, seems unlikely the proposal will be met with much support from the citizens of cash strapped Chicago. Let the battle begin.

  22. - vole - Friday, Feb 17, 12 @ 10:30 am:

I’ll have some substance up in a bit. Ahhh, the good old California prescription works every time.

  23. - dupage dan - Friday, Feb 17, 12 @ 10:31 am:

Also noted the Trib has no comments open on the story. Cowardice?

  24. - Rich Miller - Friday, Feb 17, 12 @ 10:33 am:

===but something about that song reminds me of warm weather and summertime. ===

Me too. Probably the video. If it ever gets cold, maybe I can post it.

  25. - Old Shepherd - Friday, Feb 17, 12 @ 10:44 am:

I think I speak for Saluki Nation when I say that Bruce Weber is welcome back in Carbondale any time.

  26. - Todd - Friday, Feb 17, 12 @ 10:57 am:

    Face it, your getting old

  27. - Senator Clay Davis - Friday, Feb 17, 12 @ 11:43 am:

Great call on the Loving Cup, Rich. Not a well-known Stones song that doesn’t get enough love. Being a young guy, I was introduced to the tune not by the original but because it’s a frequent cover in Phish’ repertoire.

Speaking of which, here’s a vid of their version from Halloween 2009, when they played the entire “Exile on Main St” album (with Sharon Jones on backup vocals). Amazing stuff:

  28. - Pot calling kettle - Friday, Feb 17, 12 @ 12:36 pm:

Anytime a coach makes more than the university president, there is a problem.

One wonders why they don’t pay the top professors as much as a top coaches. Top professors recruit the top intellectual talent for the grad schools. They also produce the research that gives a university a professional reputation that attracts good students and faculty, and they bring in research dollars. Of course, a grad school hires its top prospective students and pays them, athletic programs don’t do that…

  29. - Give Me A Break - Friday, Feb 17, 12 @ 12:44 pm:

Pot: The reason is 16,500 people don’t pay to watch a prof. give a lecture and ESPN and CBS don’t pay for the right to broadcast those lectures.

  30. - Shore - Friday, Feb 17, 12 @ 12:59 pm:

“anytime a coach makes more than the university president”.

The top university presidents pull $1,000,000 maybe a bit more. The new coach at osu makes $5 million including summer camps, shoe endorsements, booster stuff ect. We passed the college president/governor making less than the major college football coach/mens basketball coach thing 25-30 years ago. Even the mens coach at bradley makes more than quinn.

To give me a break-tuition income is $100-$200 million for moderately sized private universities, I think the football programs at the best schools bring in maybe $60-70 million including tv money.
