World Series trophy brought to the Statehouse

Thursday, Apr 26, 2012 - Posted by Rich Miller

* The trophy came to Springfield yesterday, but no players or coaches showed up

The St. Louis Cardinals’ 2011 World Series trophy made a stop at the Illinois Capitol Wednesday.

Members of the House and Senate – as well as aides and other Redbird fans — lined up to take pictures of the trophy, which is traveling around Cardinal territory.

None of the actual World Series players accompanied the trophy, which was brought into the building by handlers wearing special gloves. It’s not the first time a championship trophy has been paraded around the House and Senate chambers.

Ozzie showed up to town when the Sox won the World Series and spoke to both chambers.

Anyway, out of respect for the trophy, this will be a very rare St. Louis Cardinals open thread. Have at it.

The Cardinals were too busy beating the Cubs yesterday and just couldn’t make it to Springfield. If you really want to see them, their next home game is at 7:15 tomorrow evening. Milwaukee will be in town.

Got a picture to share, Rich?

We Cub fans dunno what the trophy looks like. Is it pretty? Is it a Loving Cup, or a big ole mitt?

  3. - Magoo - Thursday, Apr 26, 12 @ 10:00 am:

Since 1909 what is the biggest difference between the Cubs and the Cards? Answer– 11 World Series Trophies.

  4. - Bill - Thursday, Apr 26, 12 @ 10:06 am:

    I thought Texas won.

  5. - Jechislo - Thursday, Apr 26, 12 @ 10:13 am:

Maybe we could charge Cub fans to touch the trophy and use the proceeds to help balance the budget.

  6. - WhoKnew - Thursday, Apr 26, 12 @ 10:13 am:

    Game 6 — what a THRILLER!!

  7. - Ray del Camino - Thursday, Apr 26, 12 @ 10:14 am:

It’s early yet, but the Birds are looking pretty good. And I know Pujols will turn things around in Anaheim, but many of us are sort of guiltily enjoying his oh-fers.

Rich, thanks for the opportunity for the happy guys in the red ballcaps to pop off.

    @Ray

0 for his last 19….I love it!

  9. - Shore - Thursday, Apr 26, 12 @ 10:16 am:

They were busy losing 2 out of 3 to a cubs team that would struggle in the California penal league. Your question should have been what year will the cubs bring their next world series trophy to springfield.

  10. - PAD 24 - Thursday, Apr 26, 12 @ 10:18 am:

    Rich,

Don’t forget that the trophy made a stop at the statehouse in 2007 since the cardinals won it in 2006.

  11. - Wumpus - Thursday, Apr 26, 12 @ 10:19 am:

LaRussa could have shown up. But there would have been too much arrogance in Springfield with im plus the politicians.

  12. - LIberty_first - Thursday, Apr 26, 12 @ 10:22 am:

A sports tax would solved all our economic troubles.

  13. - Frank - Thursday, Apr 26, 12 @ 10:23 am:

What do the Cubs and Marlins have in common?

Neither team has won a World Series since moving into their new stadium :)

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch this morning lists the Cardinals as being in first place in the Central Division with a 12-7 record. The Cubs, on the other hand, are listed with a record of 6-13. The Cubs haven’t even won as many as the Cards have lost.

Perhaps your paper has different figures?

My 10 yr old grandson is such a Cardinal fan. He went to see spring training game in Florida over spring break…turned down seeing Mickey Mouse just to see the Cardinals. I’m actually surprised he did not try and get his school teacher to take his class for a field trip Springfield to see the trophy yesterday, uh, learn about our legislative process.

  16. - Ron Burgundy - Thursday, Apr 26, 12 @ 10:42 am:

The Cardinals provide a great example of excellence and fiscal responsibility for Springfield. After all, just this offseason they avoided wasting $240 million!

  17. - Shore - Thursday, Apr 26, 12 @ 10:46 am:

The cubs won the first 2 games of the series which was their first series win all year and no I’m not a believer in the cardinals long term.

  18. - Peter - Thursday, Apr 26, 12 @ 10:46 am:

I’m sure there wasn’t as much drama as when the trophy was in the other Springfield last week:

Let’s keep it that way, lol.

The Cardinals couldn’t make it. They had to pull out all the stops to avoid getting swept at Wrigley.

What’s going on with Pujols, anyway? Lot of speculation that he altered his dietary, um, supplements once he got his 10 year deal. Doesn’t want risk that.

  21. - Freeman - Thursday, Apr 26, 12 @ 10:50 am:

We need at least 3 White Sox open threads to make up for this now.

I also urge legislators to make the opening day of every session “2005 World Series Trophy Appreciation Day”. Ban all other trophies in Illlinois. Until the Sox win another one.

Congratulations to the Cards and all their loyal fans.

No Pujols, LaRussa, or Dave Duncan. Aces Wainwright struggling and Chris Carpenter hurt. Berkman, Jay, and Allen Craig all hurt. And the Cardinals are still doing quite well! Lance Lynn pitched great yesterday, striking out 7 including Starlin Castro once. David Freese continuing to rake.

Us Cardinal fans have seen this many times before (but never to this extent). When Albert starts pressing, he expands his strike zone & becomes human. Not only is Albert not getting hits or HRs, he’s not getting walked. While I haven’t seen him bat a single time this year, I am almost sure this is the case.

An Albert slump goes like this….several games of strike outs & infield popups, followed by a game of bullets hit directly at people, followed by a week of mashing.

Im not convinced that Albert is washed up, so I’m enjoying this mega-slump while it lasts.

  24. - Anonymous - Thursday, Apr 26, 12 @ 11:10 am:

Difference between the Cardinals and the GA: the GA would have signed Pujols without having the necessary revenue to fulfill his contract.

Gotta give the Cards GM alot of credit. Despite losing out on the player of the decade, he re-focused and signed Furcal & Beltran, and locked up Yadi long-term. This Cardinals roster is deep (other than 2nd base, but its been like that for 5-10 years)all over. Once Craig & Jay come back, guys like Matt Carpenter & Shane Robinson who have produced at the big league level this year are going to get pinched back down to AAA. And in AAA we still have top-10 pitching prospect Shelby Miller.

That fact is that the Cardinals have a nice little roster & they have the talent in the farm system to compete at a high level for the next several years.

Albert is still the man, but thank god we let him go to the CA Angels

  27. - mark - Thursday, Apr 26, 12 @ 11:32 am:

I heard LaRussa was gonna show up but feel asleep at a stop light in Lincoln…

  28. - Amuzing Myself - Thursday, Apr 26, 12 @ 11:45 am:

I’m enjoying the Cubs fan clinging to a 2-1 early season series win against the Cards - clearly because they know they have little else to look forward to this year. Nevermind the series is now tied 3-3, and we won’t talk about how they won (were handed) that second game. Cards are 12-7, and they’ve only played six games at home so far and without several players, due to either injury or slow progress after surgery (Wainwright). Waino pitched well in his last start.

The Cards look pretty good after this first month of baseball. I have to say I expected them to be OK, but didn’t expect such a fast start. 2012 looks to be a fun season to watch.

  29. - Blago's Hare - Thursday, Apr 26, 12 @ 11:55 am:

The Cardinals must have thought Chicago was the capitol of Illinois. They should have sent someone, or scheduled the stop for a time when they could have had a rep there.

  30. - Springfield Skeptic - Thursday, Apr 26, 12 @ 1:55 pm:

Know what a bear with a vasectomy and the World Series have in common. No Cubs.

  31. - Hawkeye - Thursday, Apr 26, 12 @ 5:00 pm:

Cubs fans - there is room under our tent when you are ready to come in out of the rain.
