Question of the day

Tuesday, Apr 2, 2013 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Michael Cabonargi, a member of the Cook County Board of Review, is considering a Democratic bid for state treasurer.

Yeah, I know what you’re thinking. Michael who? What the heck? But he had almost $350K in the bank as of January 1st.

So, let’s welcome him to state politics, shall we? Here is Cabonargi with Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon…

* The Question: Caption?

  1. - Stones - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 2:51 pm:

Looks like “American Gothic” gone very wrong.

  2. - phocion - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 2:56 pm:

“Will I support you if you run for AG, Sheila?…I don’t know, it depends on who else is running”

  3. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 2:57 pm:

Cabonargi was appointed to replace Joe Berrios on the Board of Review.

Given the property tax hikes in Cook County despite declining real estate values, it may be a good time for him to move on. Some voters seeking tax relief are unhappy that their property tax valuation appeals are being rejected as a matter of course.

  4. - Responsa - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 2:59 pm:

Sorry. I just can’t come up with a single caption that wouldn’t be unbearably cruel. And I’m basically a nice person so I’m going to pass on this opportunity.

===Given the property tax hikes in Cook County despite declining real estate values===

If you change “despite” to “at least partly because of” you’d be far more right.

  6. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 3:01 pm:

I’m not sure that anybody is ever gonna be able to top Stones’ comment.

  9. - Because I said so... - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 3:33 pm:

Mike Cabonargi is a really sharp guy and really nice too. Best of luck Mike!

  10. - Chicago Cynic - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 3:33 pm:

Mike has cleaned up the Board of Review. He’s a former securities law prosecutor, Simon and Durbin protege and all around good guy. That said, a caption contest is a nice welcome to politics.

“Beauty and the Beast enjoy a quiet moment”

  11. - Chicago Cynic - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 3:35 pm:

    47 - perfect!

  12. - Norseman - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 3:37 pm:

Sheila who? and Michael what’s his name? pose for a picture at a rally for whatever office.

  13. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 3:39 pm:

    (Sheila thinking), (Cabonargi thinking)

“Why do I have to take this picture? I know, i am probably helping, but really, who know this person next to me? I bet when I show this to my supporters, they are going to ask me who this is. Ok, just be a team player and help. Smile and take the picture…”

    Sheila: “Ready?”

Michael: “I was thinking the same thing. Ready.”

  20. - Just The Way It Is One - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 4:05 pm:

Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon announces her support for the pictured gentleman, rumored to be somebody few have ever really even heard of, who thinks he’s qualified to be Illinois’ Treasurer apparently, by enthusiastically asserting, “I’m supporting ANYbody who says they’ll support ME for the Statewide Office I’ve announced I’m running for–the Office which no one knows what it IS because I won’t SAY what it is–AND because I’m endorsing ANYbody who doesn’t look like Pat Quinn–not because I don’t like or respect him as our Governor, but, well, ‘cuz like I used to tell my Pops to his utter dismay when I was a little ‘Crumbcrusher,’ and he was insisting on an answer or reason for something I was doing…’just BECAUSE’!!!”

  21. - Just The Way It Is One - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 4:08 pm:

Empty Chair and Boone’s is Back up above: excellent! And, as noted before, more than an Honorable Mention to Stones…classic–AND hilarious!!!

  22. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 4:13 pm:

“In a world where bland meets boring, two crazy kids decided to turn the world … upside down.

Meet Joanne Humphries, college tutor to Athletes at Southern North University, City Campus. Joanne loves poetry, geometry ‘proofs’ and frozen custard with … sprinkles.

Joanne tutoring partner, Davis O’Sullivan-O’Hallorhan, an Irish immigrant, when not tutoring, is on a world-wide quest for the perfect closet organizer, at a reasonable price.

How these two crazy kids solved the biggest algebraic scandal since the ‘2000 Computer Glitch’ of 1999 is the stuff legends are made of. Their only hope to stay awake was something so dispicable, Chicagoans cringe at the mention of it.

    Sheila Simon …Michael Cabonargi

    The Ketchup Hotdog Diaries…

Getting the Plain, Bland, truth, was NOT on the menu …On petitons, coming soon.”

  28. - Skeeter - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 4:46 pm:

Phocion’s initial comment has not gotten the respect here that it deserves. Brilliant.

That being said, it just hit me. The Dems choice for AG may come down to either Sheila Simon or Kwame Raoul? Please tell me there will a third candidate. Somebody who has a real record. With all the lawyers in Illinois, we have got to come up with a better choice than either of these two.

  29. - Source Code - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 4:48 pm:

I agree with Chicago Cynic. Cook County tax bills were mailed on time for the first time in over 30 years last year.

Cabonargi: “Shiela - is this the line we wait in until Lisa makes her 2014 decision?”

  30. - Wensicia - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 4:49 pm:

Whom benefits, politically, from this shot? One, both or neither? It is a nice picture, though.

  33. - Doug - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 4:55 pm:

Cabonargi is a good guy. The BOR in Cook County is significantly more transparent since Mike joined their ranks. Funny picture, but I think if these 2 start running a lot of folks on this thread will be eating their words

“Introducing our coaches for this year’s ‘Math-A-Thon’ team …”

  35. - Red Ranger - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 5:12 pm:

Before we give Michael the award for the “Greatest and Most Ethical Cook Co Pol of All-Time”, lets wait for the day when an average Cook County property tax payer can fight their bill without the assistance of a connected property tax lawyer. Then we can say “Michael really cleaned up the BOR.” Until then, it is business as usual over-by-der.

  43. - Quicknote - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 8:17 pm:

Mike’s a good guy. Occasionally bump into him in the neighborhood and at policy events. Exactly the kind of person you’d want as treasurer.

  44. - A Citizen - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 8:18 pm:

And the Dem Party Mascot look alike contest winner is …..

  45. - Rudy - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 9:02 pm:

Michael brought on-line filing to the Board of Review in the last 2 years. Before he arrived, the Board used a 3-part form with carbon paper in between.

I’m sorry, she’s a really nice lady, and smart, and hard working, and reputed to be honest and all that… but she just isn’t photogenic.

$350k is a pretty substantial campaign warchest for an obscure office (like Treasurer).

  50. - Spliff - Wednesday, Apr 3, 13 @ 8:57 am:

Sheila I knew and worked for your father … your no Paul Simon!

  51. - Niles Township - Wednesday, Apr 3, 13 @ 1:49 pm:

Our fair governor started out at this board when it was known as the Board of Tax Appeals. There is precedent from going from this office to Treasurer.

  52. - Anonimo - Wednesday, Apr 3, 13 @ 5:32 pm:

I know, hearsay is bad - but here it goes: I heard from someone that worked with him that he’s not a nice guy. I won’t be voting for him.

  53. - Amalia - Wednesday, Apr 3, 13 @ 6:54 pm:

@anonimo, I”ve met the guy and talked with him and he’s very smart and quite cordial.
