Rauner unveils TV ads

Tuesday, Jun 11, 2013 - Posted by Rich Miller

* From a press release…

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner began airing two television ads today highlighting the campaign’s focus on controlling spending, job creation and reforming state government. The ads are running on broadcast and cable statewide.

“After months traveling the state, it’s clear that Illinoisans are ready to take on the status quo in Springfield, clean up state government, get spending in line, and make it easier to create jobs and grow a business here,” Rauner said. “Those are my top priorities, and I’m committed to reaching as many voters as possible with that message.”

Prior to announcing his campaign for governor, Bruce made more than 65 stops on a statewide Listening Tour getting to know the thoughts and concerns of thousands of Illinoisans. Bruce is currently on his Bring Back Illinois campaign tour. He participated in an employee town hall and press conference in Peoria last week and an open press employee town hall in Chicago yesterday. Bruce is in Wheeling today.

* Here are Rauner’s two new ads. First, “Upside Down”

* “Back To Work”

Rate ‘em.

* Rauner also issued a statement today about Bill Daley’s candidacy…

“I respect Bill Daley and welcome him to the governor’s race. Unfortunately, one more candidate from the entrenched Illinois political power structure doesn’t hold much promise for fixing our serious problems. The same old political dynasties have literally had decades to address our economic decline, our pension disaster, and our failing schools. They haven’t done the job. Illinoisans aren’t going to fall for that again. We need a clean break from the political machines that have been in charge for too long. It’s time to clean house, shake up Springfield, and bring back Illinois.”

Discuss.

I commend Rauner’s media team for getting such open-ended work in the off season. We should all be so lucky.

  2. - Chucky Jay - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:14 am:

I think Bruce Rauner should focus on winning his primary before he starts taking shots at Daley (who may or may not be the Democrat nominated)

  3. - soccermom - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:14 am:

65 stops? Heck, PQ did that many on the day he officially announced for governor…

  4. - Montrose - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:15 am:

“Not me. I can’t be bought. I have more money than God, so I am set.”

I am pretty sure that last line was in there.

  5. - levois - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:15 am:

When I think of Rauner now I think of Gidwitz. I wonder which one would’ve been a better governor if either had went beyond primary in their respective elections?

  6. - CircularFiringSquad - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:17 am:

still no people with CousinBrucey in the ads
    Very smart
We know Gidwitz, CousinBrucey is no Gidwitz

  7. - Empty Chair - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:19 am:

How big is the ad buy?

  8. - siriusly - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:19 am:

Bill Daley has had next to nothing to do with Illinois politics, so Rauner’s hit is way off. however, it might be an easier sell to GOP voters who think that all things Chicago and Democratic equal a big conspiracy to ruin us.

  9. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:20 am:

===How big is the ad buy? ===

I’ll be posting that soon for subscribers.

  10. - reformer - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:22 am:

    Cut state spending?

    * Illinois is already among the lowest spending states, either as a percent of GDP or per capita.

    * We already have the fewest state workers per capita.

    * Our state already provides the lowest level of education funding of any state.

    * State funding for social services has been steadily diminishing.

Voters shouldn’t tolerate more of the tired GOP generalities about “waste, fraud and abuse.” If the state is spending too much, and if taxes must be cut, exactly where will the spending cuts be made. Is Bruce really a different kind of pol and bold enough to spell out his specific agenda??

  11. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:24 am:

Better than Daley’s but a tenuous hold on reality.
    B.

Rauner is on fire. All that money he’s dumping on his consultants to buy him the governors mansion. Then of course this innovative new slogan “back to work” which has NEVER been used before.

OH GOD Rich there’s an actual buy behind this?

Dude, you’re running for elective office, hate to break it to ya but that makes you a politician!

===it might be an easier sell to GOP voters who think that all things Chicago and Democratic equal a big conspiracy to ruin us.===

Wait until Primary Voters in the GOP find out calls were made to Democrat Arne Duncan to Clout Rauner’s child into Payton Prep …just saying.

    To the Post,

“I can’t be bought, but how much for my child to get Clouted?”

“End corruption, like when Dopes like me Clout over the hardworking little people’s kids, like when I did it!”

He looks and sounds phony, and going after the “Democrats and some Republicans”… so, does Bruce Rauner have a “Litmus Test”?

“You can clout your kid into Payton Prep, but I will get back to you if you are really ‘Gaming’ the system.”

    Yikes!

You can’t clain you are NOT part of the problem/corruption and still be gaming the SAME system.

    Quaility - “B/B+”

    Message - “B-/C”

    Truth - “D-”

  16. - walkinfool - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:34 am:

“Upside down” doesn’t do much. It’s a finance term.

“Back to work” is clearer, but is beginning to become old news.

“I can’t be bought” will resonate and stick with some voters, but aren’t they also the ones who will skip a primary?

  17. - Ggal - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:36 am:

    “bring back Illinois”
Is this code for I’m going to pander to the tea party? I have seen and read that phrase too many times and not enough of how that task is going to be accomplished.

  18. - Come on man! - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:36 am:

He needs a voice over guy bad. I also like in the Carhart Ad he trys to get folks with dropping his g’s and lengthening his vowels.

  19. - Old and In The Way - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:40 am:

I can’t be bought…..because I’m buying it all for myself and my rich friends and you don’t have enough money to out bid us…so there. Now, get back to work at those minimum wage jobs. Say, did I mention that we need to cut that outrageously high minimum wage in the state? Too many takers!

  20. - Old Shepherd - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:42 am:

I was struck by the “put these things back to work” line in the second ad. Is he talking about the backhoes or the people? It’s a bad line.

  21. - Downstate - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:42 am:

Talking to my elected Republican friends - even they are worried as “incumbents”. “Toss em’ out” is becoming a fairly common refrain.

Works for Rauner in the primary and in the general as well!

  22. - OneMan - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:45 am:

Interesting use of the Chicago accent on leavin…

Ads are not bad, still think a bio piece is a better call for him at this point, but that is me.

  23. - The Captain - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:49 am:

His awkward hand gestures made me think of this.

    “Yeah, this feels more natural.”

  24. - dazed & confused - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:50 am:

Given that Caterpillar required their logo to be blacked out in an Extreme Home Makeover show filmed outside of Peoria because of trademark and branding, I’m curious if they gave approval for their logo in this TV spot.

I’m sure that Mr. Rauner didn’t do it without checking….

  25. - Bill White - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:56 am:

If Rauner does spend big money, I think he will be a huge obstacle to anyone else who might want to challenge Rutherford’s nomination.

That said, I just can’t see Rauner getting more votes than Rutherford in March 2014.

  26. - Kwark - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 11:59 am:

One of the most memorable parts of the Marin interview was at 7.45, where Rauner basically says, “Hey, I think everyone should take advantage of the opportunity to clout their kids into selective schools.” Man of the people!

Seriously, Rauner said “I advocated for her in the {Payton} process.” The question is, how? Details, please!

  27. - LittleLebowskiUrbanAchiever - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 12:04 pm:

I’m Bruce Rauner and I promise not to blink for an uncomfortable amount of time… Even if it creeps you out. I won’t back down.

  28. - foster brooks - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 12:13 pm:

The only thing bruce rauner can promise is to shift the tax burden from the rich and corporations to the middle class. And people wonder why the democrats are in charge.

  29. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 12:15 pm:

As an aside. The Rauner Facebook page is full of pro-and con wingnuts today. Pretty funny.

  30. - warhed - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 12:20 pm:

this is great! if all you guys have on Rauner is helping his kid get into a select school you will all be looking for real jobs - if you remember how to work- when we are calling him Govenor Rauner…

  31. - langhorne - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 12:25 pm:

completely generic, worn out message and themes. (repeat shore’s links here). who is he connecting with in these ads? political junkies will watch out of curiosity, but i doubt the average (primary) voter will absorb or be moved by any of it. its the same old i can turn things around song. ho hum

  32. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 12:31 pm:

You Rauner guys sure do complain a whole lot about people bringing up the school clouting incident.

Your angry, single-minded focus prolly only makes people think it’s a weakness worth exploiting.

    Just sayin…

  33. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 12:35 pm:

    - Rich Miller -,

Yep. And the Hypocricy of it all.

    Other than that …lol

  34. - hisgirlfriday - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 12:40 pm:

Had to watch these ads with the sound down. I’m wondering where the bio ad is here to introduce who Bruce is. Hammering that things are awful in this state is meaningless unless you present a clear picture of what the alternative is.

The upside down ad is gimmicky but I think it would get my attention and cut through ad clutter. In the second ad, like @dazedandconfused, my first thought was hey that’s a cat machine. Then my next thought was the cat ceo claiming his was a personal endorsement and wondering if this cat footage is paid for and possible cat employee is being paid by the rauner campaign or will this in-kind contribution from cat show up on his papers. Also I wondered if this ad will be running in decatur. If I was one of the people laid off there Id certainly question why a company has to lay off people for finances but can let some politician film his commercials for free at a cat site with cat equipment.

Finally on messaging - can someone tell me precisely what bruce wants to bring Illinois back to?

  35. - In the know - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 12:44 pm:

The upside down thing is gimmicky, but annoying since it lasts too long. a bit too clever for its own good.
The back to work ad struck me as well because of the CAT machinery. Most of those “action” shots could have been done at the CAT proving ground, but the workers running them? Appeared to be fixing a street, so were they public employees? Were they UAW? Operating Engineers? And I agree with Oneman, use of the term “them” was awkward. Then again if corporations are people, then machines can get back to work.

  36. - Obamas Puppy - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 12:51 pm:

Anyone watching Springfield and thinking that Govt employee unions control the legislature is delusional.

  37. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:01 pm:

All that money and this is what he comes up with? Who wrote these? I don’t like Upside Down. The first couple of seconds gives a headache and it isn’t unique enough to capture your attention for the rest of the ad. The Carhart jacket is about as subtle as a yellow hard hat. There is nothing memorable about these ads other than “I can’t be bought” which a) implies that everyone else running for office can(?) and b) just emphasizes his great wealth and inability to relate to the average voter. He needs to spend that money on better creative.

  38. - Precinct Captain - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:09 pm:

If he’s going to be the back to work governor, what is his jobs plan? I see four cheap bullet points on his website under “Jobs.” How would right to work zones work? What type of tax system does he want? A uniform property tax? A property for income swap? Graduated income tax? Value-added? One reason I liked Rich Whitney is that he had actual position papers that more than just cheap BS.

  39. - langhorne - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:11 pm:

forgot to mention–lose the barn coat unless it is yours and legitimately old and worn. and btw, it is getting close to 90 in spfld and 80 in chgo. so on second thought, just lose the barn coat.

  40. - langhorne - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:14 pm:

is the jacket made in america? if it is a prop a staffer bought at big R, it might not be.

  41. - Demoralized - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:29 pm:

==Illinoisans aren’t going to fall for that again.==

I think Mr. Rauner is giving us a bit too much credit. We’ve tripped and fallen so many times we need one of those “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” alert things.

  42. - zatoichi - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:55 pm:

So Rauner is “ready to take on the status quo in Springfield, clean up state government, get spending in line, and make it easier to create jobs and grow a business here,”. What campaign in the last 40 years has not used those talking points? Since this is his first attempt at political office, what personal political successes does he bring to the party except having alot of money?

  43. - Chavez-respecting Obamist - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:56 pm:

    “…bring back Illinois.”

I don’t know what this means. Bring it back from where? And bring it back to what?

  44. - Chicago Cynic - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:09 pm:

I like upside down. Gimmicky, but attention getting. Simple, though disingenuous message. The other one was just dreck.

  45. - Ghost - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:12 pm:

Getting buisness is generally about infrastructure, location and laws which protect business owenrs from predatory activites.

How will lowering taxes in IL help create desriable infrasturture, locations and a safe business environment?

After all if all it takes to lure business is low taxes, how come every business in the united states is not based out of nevada or whatever Ruaner consider to be a buisness friendly tax state.

What costs will he cut from the budget? Police protection? bank regulation? Or it this the mytheical magic beans reductions of every business man who know how to fix governemtn, but has no concrete plans they can identify other then feel good sound bytes.

  46. - Endangered Moderate Species - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:25 pm:

It looks like I am in the minority opinion, but I thought both ads did a good job of hitting on the main points this campaign will be driving home to the voters.

I don’t agree with the thought that he needs an introductory bio, too much information this early in the campaign will only clutter the mind of the consumer.

His eyes are creepy in the first ad. He needs to blink.

  47. - Tom - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:26 pm:

spend some money to make him look comfortable. Body language is key in ads. Not sure I would have had him carry the entire ad.

  48. - anonymoose - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:38 pm:

Quite poor, below average and not at all memorable - in my opinion.

Ad #1 Who is the genius? All the “good” stuff is upside down and tough to read. Right side up…all the “good” words are very tiny. Helloooo -SIZE MATTERS.

Ad #2 Bruce Rrauner all the “big” words in the ad are NOT good words to associate your candidate with: BULLDOZE, WRECK, LEVEL. Bruce Rauner - a destructive force for Illinois?

Finally, in my opinion, Mr. Rauner has an unusual sounding voice, gestures, presence. A rather goofy-odd look in his eyes….but I am trying to be respectful. If it is pride that makes him use his own voice and presence in his ads, boy, he better get over that PDQ.

You probably could have stopped there. Also, I have a different spin. The people of this state buy the “your handouts will never end” line from the D’s, rather than the, “I’ll create an environment favorable for job growth and you can earn the things you have,” that comes from the GOP.

  50. - So. ILL - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 3:20 pm:

Also, I completely agree with this. Spot on. Excellent observation. Don’t write the script for your opponents man! “Bruce Rauner will ‘bulldoze, wreck, & level’ women’s access to preventive health care and ovarian cancer screenings,” and on and on with every entitlement or pension benefit the state of Illinois offers to women, children, and first responders.

  51. - Illannoyed - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 3:27 pm:

How long must we suffer campaign ads like these–ones in which the candidates promise things (”grow jobs,” “cut income taxes”) when we know (or ought to) that no one person can accomplish that. But maybe Rauner believes it. In that case, the clincher should be “I’m Bruce Rauner, and I’m delusional.” Oh, should he re-do that first ad, there should be cue cards that say “Blink, for god’s sake, blink” on them.

  52. - Just Saying - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 3:44 pm:

    “I can’t be bought…”

After reading Crain’s, it seems Rauner may BE a buyer. Ask Stu Levine. Or Ed Rendell.

  53. - too obvious - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 4:10 pm:

Will Rauner agree to reduce the size of the huge pension fund management fees he receives? Guessing not.

Probably makes more from IL pension funds than any 50 employees combined right now.

  54. - Chicago Cynic - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 4:30 pm:

Anonymoose, I disagree with assessment of Rauner’s voice. It’s deep and way way better than that high pitched whiny twang of Bill Daley.

  55. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 5:44 pm:

Just to be clear, I really dislike this guy.

He’s a punk bully and a phony with a real twisted sense of entitlement. In my lifetime, born and raised in Illinois, guys like him get what’s coming to them.

You want to build yourself up, public-trough billionaire, by smacking down teachers and pensioneers?

Pack a lunch, daddio, it’s going to be an all-day job.

Why don’t you take all that money you made scamming off the public employee pensions, and the charter schools, and Rahm squeezing the FCC for SecurityLink, and build yourself a nice Roland Burris Memorial?

Because you ain’t ever going to be governor. Not in my lifetime.

What’s revealing about Rauner is that he pretends to be everything that he is not.

What’s wrong with who you are, Bruce? Not attractive? Ashamed?

  56. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 12:44 pm:

warhed, thanks for coming. You’ve been a persistent commenter lately on Rauner. I noticed two things.

    1) Your IP address is from New York City.

    2) Rauner’s cable media buyer is Cable Scope, Inc, which is located in New York City.

    I’m sure there’s no coincidence.
