More Lou
Friday, Nov 1, 2013 - Posted by Rich Miller * Usually, I post a video at the end of the week when comments are turned off. But we’re gonna do something a little different today. I didn’t post many of Lou Reed’s “hits” earlier this week, and that may have disappointed some folks. So let’s start with the Velvet Underground’s “Rock & Roll”… Jenny said when she was just about five years old * “Sweet Jane”… And there’s even some evil mothers I thought I was * And, of course… Plucked her eyebrows on the way

Rock & Roll is my favorite Lou Reed song, even better than the Sweet Jane version with the great guitar introduction.

I always correlate “Perfect Day” with Trainspotting, but it is such a beautiful song that I could listen to on repeat for a long time.

“Vicious, You hit me with a flower, you do it every hour, oh baby you’re so vicious.”
Love that song.

Go see “Berlin” right now. Terriffic movie… terribly depressing album… Somehow, it just worked.

Never will forget hearing “Loaded” for the first time in the fall of 1984 when I was a freshman in college - someone gave it to me to listen to because they said “Oh, Sweet Nuthin” sounded like the Dead. The album was and is amazing. It is timeless in the sense that if you played it for someone and told them it was written and recorded yesterday that they would believe it.
Allright, allright
And it was allright
Oh, you listen to me now
And it was allright
C’mon now
Little better
Little bit
It was allright
It was allright

‘There are even some evil mothers they’re going to tell you that everything is just dirt’
Loaded is probably my favorite album from before I was born. While it’s VU’s most mainstream, it really taught me to not believe the best music is on the radio.

All are great Lou choices but in terms of Springfield relevance, I’d pick Halloween Parade. So many died without marriage rights. Needs to stop now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQrgSpKHFOs

If I had any question as to the depth and breadth of Lou Reed’s influence, a FB post from the Bottle Rockets’ Brian Henneman about the influence of “Sweet Jane” on their song “Kerosene” dispelled all doubts.
Masterpiece begets masterpiece.

And as long as we’re the topic of life-changing music, Bloodshot is re-issuing long-out-of-print first two albums from the Bottle Rockets — re-mastered and with scads of unreleased bonus tracks: http://goo.gl/F9fYGl

Live “Vicious” on the extended album is great. We used to play that in our locker room to fire up the Moline High School swimming team before heading out to the pool to do battle
