Reaching into the past for today’s gotcha moment
Friday, Aug 22, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller * Back in the day, Bruce Rauner was the chairman of the Chicago Convention and Tourism Board and he spoke at a press conference announcing that the National Restaurant Association had committed to keep its annual show in Chicago through 2016. So, naturally he had some kind words for the state’s leaders about the then new McCormick Place reforms…
* It’s a fun little ding, for sure, but times were different then, for both Illinois and Rauner. Watch… The tone of his voice is what struck me most. His voice has a much harder, sharper edge to it now, and if you close your eyes you can sometimes hear Reagesque inflections. Such a change can come with experience, but often, with political candidates, comes after coaching. No big deal either way. * But imagine if this or even part of this brief little clip was somehow used in a TV ad… Heh.

That internet…
…it’s for …forever.
Aw, it’s a fun ding, but Quinn Crew, you get ONE real shot to make hay out of this, if you choose to. You better make pretty doggone sure…it’s a huge, huge winner. Take your time, make it delicious, or just leave it as it is, an intertube “funnies”
In reality, it’s just a cutesy ding, and fun to mock…until it isn’t.

Let’s all thank Rich for this one. This is great stuff! This is better than the best circus.
- Empty Suit - Friday, Aug 22, 14 @ 9:38 am:
Yes any time you catch your opponent praising you a definite plus, “bleepin golden”.
Problem for PQ is the videos of him praising Blago..”honest, man of character” etc etc. Ouch!
- Frenchie Mendoza - Friday, Aug 22, 14 @ 9:38 am:
It’s interesting, too: he’s a much better speaker in these clips. No pauses, no staring upward to think of the next talking point, no trying to listen to what he says as he’s saying it.
He seems actually to believe what he says here. I’m not sure what this means except it points to an authenticity problem with the recent Rauner. His recent body language — his eyes especially — has none of this authenticity.

I hope Quinn can do something with this. As OW says though you only get one shot and screwing it up or going too far gets you nowhere.
On the other hand I could see Rauner using this snippet and then adding “Thank you to all you democratic leaders who have screwed up so much that it gives me an opportunity to run using all your screw-ups over the past 10 years as my platform.”
- William j Kelly - Friday, Aug 22, 14 @ 9:51 am:
I bet whoever was in charge of wiping all embarrassing or damaging rauner pictures or video off the web must be in serious trouble over this. But if I may say two things in that persons defense 1) it must have been a massive job and 2) leaving this gem behind should give ALL current rauner supporters a verrrry clear picture of just how quickly and viciously he WILL turn on YOU in the future. Rauner stankin up Springfield stankin up Illinois!
- jerry 101 - Friday, Aug 22, 14 @ 9:52 am:
Oh, come on. That video is clearly a hoax.
The REAL Bruce Rauner wears carhartt jackets, flannel shirts and blue jeans, just like regular old everyday Illinoisans.
- Oswego Willy - Friday, Aug 22, 14 @ 9:55 am:
- jerry 101 - wins…
I’ve watched it a few times now, and I agree, Rauner seems so much more relaxed and himself, embracing the chance to speak and being thoughtful in his remarks, looking genuine.
Shame Rauner couldn’t channel this speaker, as opposed to Howard Dean at times.
- Arthur Andersen - Friday, Aug 22, 14 @ 9:56 am:
On the other hand, you had PQ behind him doing a dance like the Metamucil just kicked in.
- VanillaMan - Friday, Aug 22, 14 @ 9:58 am:
Wow - so just a few years ago, Rauner, just like a majority of Illinois voters, decided to give Pat Quinn a chance to be governor and to be openly supportive of him.
Say - how did that guy work out as governor?
Pat Quinn’s campaign won’t tell us. However they do want you to know that Rauner is rich and has tax shelters for his Federal taxes in the Caymans.
Pat Quinn is running for reelection, but you wouldn’t know it by his campaign because they are running an anti-Rauner message, not a pro-Quinn message.
Like a majority being polled now, Rauner sides with Illinoisans who don’t think Pat has done such a great job after he got their vote.
I don’t see how this is some kind of killer video. As a matter of fact, it shows that Rauner had similar hopes for Quinn as most people.
And I’m still waiting for Pat Quinn to tell us what a great job he’s done as governor. That is what he needs to do.
- Steve - Friday, Aug 22, 14 @ 10:01 am:
I can’t wait for Pat Quinn to just keep running this as an TV ad. Even better, a robo-call with Rauner’s voice praising Pat Quinn in Republican areas. This is hysterical.
- Oswego Willy - Friday, Aug 22, 14 @ 10:02 am:
===Pat Quinn is running for reelection, but you wouldn’t know it by his campaign because they are running an anti-Rauner message, not a pro-Quinn message.===
Seems to be “working” sense all I hear is how close it’s getting on the last couple polls…with negative Ads against Rauner leading the way.
The lesser of two evils works.

So nice to see this little blast from the past…just Brucie demonstrating how much of an “outsider” he is.

- Nearly Normal - Friday, Aug 22, 14 @ 10:31 am:
Sooo, how does one get to be chair of the Chicago Convention and Tourism Board? I would imagine it is an appointment but by whom? The City of Chicago? The local Chamber? Sounds like one must be an insider to get this plum.
- kj - Friday, Aug 22, 14 @ 10:38 am:
In theory, shouldn’t there be a reverse of this? By that I mean isn’t reasonable to assume Governor Quinn said something about Rauner and the Convention bureau in his remarks?
- William j Kelly - Friday, Aug 22, 14 @ 10:43 am:
Btw , picking your nose on camera is a “gotcha moment,” being exposed on camera as a total fraud is something a little different. Let’s hope the Illinois Republican Party isn’t so far gone that they show they have some self respect and replace rauner today!
- Shore - Friday, Aug 22, 14 @ 10:44 am:
It’s a good video pick up and I’m surprised quinn hasn’t used Rauner’s civic activism against him more. Rauner’s been on the stage awhile and there have to be dozens of videos and quotes of him praising all sorts of quinn-blago-george ryan ect ect initiatives.
- CircularFiringSquad - Friday, Aug 22, 14 @ 10:45 am:
Plus the 2014 Version of Mitt Rauner is much, much skinnier. That makes all the “rentals” — credit unions, armed ballot security teams, time buyers very worried about the next few weeks
- Da Moat - Friday, Aug 22, 14 @ 11:09 am:
They aren’t replacing Rauner.
- 47th Ward - Friday, Aug 22, 14 @ 11:30 am:
Bidness community? I hope his speech coaches are working on that tic.

Another Gotcha! Blago appointee and Jack Lavin understudy pleads guilty to tax evasion after double dipping at DCEO!

If the Quinn campaign wants my advice, they should call me before 2 today.
Their gratitude yesterday was pretty underwhelming.
- dupage dan - Friday, Aug 22, 14 @ 12:11 pm:
Given all the huffing and puffing yesterday about the gun totin’ PI intimidating the Libertarian party canvassers, I thought the media would be all over it today. I tried a search but couldn’t find anything. Given the seriousness of the allegations, we should have seen something, no? All I found was 2 things. One from Capfax and one from the Libertarian party website.
I will wait with bated breath the roll out of this Rauner endorses Quinn piece in yet another scintillating Quinn web video. That’s a sure hit with the voters, right?
Am I missing something here? All that angst yesterday. And then nothing? Are the news media outlets so jaded and cynical they don’t even see this as malevolent? Baffling.
- Yellow Dog Democrat - Friday, Aug 22, 14 @ 12:18 pm:
Thanks DuPage Dan.
If Team Quinn wants my advice, they should call.
- Oswego Willy - Friday, Aug 22, 14 @ 12:34 pm:

You and - Soccermom - are highly coveted “gets” for AWillyWord Con$ulting. You - 47th Ward -, and - Soccermom - get the Dem side of the Shop, full partners.
No snark, you’re one of the best around here & in the real world too. A simple thank you isn’t too much.
Much respect.

Clueless as always in your political advice.
- Yellow Dog Democrat - Friday, Aug 22, 14 @ 12:58 pm:
Willy -
A smart Democrat would make you an offer, and if I could take a hint I’d stop helping Team Quinn out for free and go work for Rauner.
We at least know from this video that Bruce Rauner knows how to say thank you.

===We at least know from this video that Bruce Rauner knows how to say thank you.===
That is true.
At the next office meeting, we will all talk about rain making.
There’s still time for Rauner to pick you up, next time I see him, I’ll put in the good word.
