Rauner claims he’s being outspent 2-1
Tuesday, Aug 26, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller
* From yesterday’s Bruce Rauner fundraising appeal…
Right now we’re being outspent by about 2 to 1 by the special interest allies who support Quinn-Madigan.
Will you help us get this ad out far and wide by making an urgent contribution of $25, $50, $100, $250, $500, $1,000, or even $2,500?
Quinn-Madigan and their allies are literally spending about a million dollars a week in lies to protect their system.
But you can stop them today, right now, with a donation.
Join us, today.
Bruce
* His campaign manager sent one out today…
Pat Quinn and his special interest allies are spending about $1 million PER WEEK with lies about Bruce.
If it sounds like a lot, that’s because it is. They’re outspending us about 2 to 1.
Quinn will spend more money this year than anyone has ever spent to win the Illinois governor’s race. Ever. He’ll spend millions more than even Blago.
Why so much? With Pat Quinn under federal investigation, more news about patronage hires, an economy in the tank, cuts to education funding, and a whole host of other problems it will take record-breaking special interest cash to give Quinn a chance.
You know when the courts are intervening to kick term limits off the ballot despite overwhelming support from rank-and-file democrats, independents, and republicans that the deck is stacked against us.
But no one ever thought shaking up the system in a state like Illinois would be easy. The machine will pull out every stop to win. Of course.
So I spent all day yesterday re-crunching the numbers. We need $437,332 to give our advertising a needed boost to close the gap with Quinn and his special interest machine.
Are they sure that’s not $437,332.47?
Price specifics like that are designed to make the ask sound more believable. But unless all of Rauner’s GTCR stock just tanked, I find it hard to believe that he’s starving for cash.

It’s the Burn Rate of the Rauner campaign cash that warrants the appeal, not the raising of the cash…
Unless the $10 million Bruce and Ken Griffin magically lost hundreds of millions, or refuse to spend more money…
…Rauner will never be “cash poor” in this campaign.
Ever.
- Formerly Known As... - Tuesday, Aug 26, 14 @ 11:38 am:
Is that accurate one-on-one?
The only way it seems the “we’re being outspent” works, maybe, is by totaling the spending in all races. In that case, maybe “Quinn-Madigan” are outspending 2-1.
Even then, he can write one check and reverse any 2-1 ratio overnight.
- How Ironic - Tuesday, Aug 26, 14 @ 11:39 am:
If Bruce needs all day to ‘re-crunch the numbers’ for a total of $437,332 for an ad buy…God help us when he really has to work on a state budget.
That should have been 15 minutes work by an underling, and then Bruce gives a thumbs up or down.
His statement makes him seem like he has problems with math and time management. “All day”? Really?

“We need $437,322……” Do they acrually think we are that stupid to go for that precision, business-minded accounting ploy”. Yep
- jim - Tuesday, Aug 26, 14 @ 11:49 am:
Of course he’s not starved for cash. He’s seeking support from the public in terms of dollars. It’s no secret that donors are more enthusiastic supporters, and he’s trying to gin up his support.
There’s no mystery to this. It’s standard operating procedure in all campaign.

===There’s no mystery to this===
I totally get what you’re saying, but why is he allowing himself to be outspent 2-1?

Living on $53 million, gross, a year, doesn’t go as far as it use to?
To all that…
The money personally spent, and “raised” by calling Ken Griffin in the Primary showed a ROI that yielded a 17 point positive “return” than what expected in “earnings” to the investors…
…don’t Hedgies like to distribute losses and liabilities as much as they can? They go “All in” until the numbers speak to more protection or cover to the investments?
Maybe Ken Griffin’s checkbook is closing for a bit?
Maybe the “exposure” (any and all definitions) is too much right now for both Bruce and Ken?

Stupid auto-correct

Good Grief
Can’t these guys give it up already.
2-1 outspent–I guess that’s easy when you arbitrarily decide what is spent against you and what you are spending. Heck, the Illinois budget would be pretty easy to balance using those same standards.

did he just insulted all branches of illinois government(wow) some are your own party members
- phocion - Tuesday, Aug 26, 14 @ 12:09 pm:
Seems doubtful Rauner is being outspent. Unless he’s cherry-picking data on A-1 filings for a specific period. But, hey, I get plenty of Quinn appeals for funds and they’re pretty silly in their attempts to get me to open the checkbook, too.

LOL $437,322!
I can’t even read this with a straight face!

Rich, Forget Lutheran Services. Bruce needs your help.

He pays no social security/medicare tax and begs for money?? LOL

Wha, wha, wha! I really feel for the man. NOT!
Nah, he and the Koch brothers and friends will do just fine spending their money on this race without going and begging from the rest of us.
- How Ironic - Tuesday, Aug 26, 14 @ 12:26 pm:
The more I read this, the more absurd it is on it’s face.
I think I’d have a similar feeling if I came across Bill Gates at a crosswalk holding a cardboard sign saying “Will work for food or cash donation”.
- Nearly Normal - Tuesday, Aug 26, 14 @ 12:30 pm:
Bruce, just transfer some of the Caymans funds to your stateside bank and you will be fine!

- why is he allowing himself to be outspent 2-1? -
Maybe he decided the ROI wasn’t looking good, and he wasn’t sure he could transfer liabilities to a shell committee. He’s much more comfortable investing other people’s money.

There are salesmen, then there are snake-oil salesmen.
This must be pretty confusing to those on the low-end Rauner funder list. I don’t think Griff and those who have been writing five-figure checks got it.
- zatoichi - Tuesday, Aug 26, 14 @ 1:23 pm:
Just a few months ago a Rauner spot was in every commercial break with no Quinn. Now Quinn starts spending some money and now Rauner feels he is being outspent. Pass the Kleenex.
- Demoralized - Tuesday, Aug 26, 14 @ 1:28 pm:
It’s a standard fundraising appeal, but man does it sound pretty dopey coming from a billionaire.
He could pull out his wallet and hand over the cash for the ad campaign and it would be a blip in his bank account.

Which also happens to be about how much you earned in 2012, Baron. Don’t cry poor when you’re rich. #Whoops

Um, I think this is what a lot of levels of donors are used to seeing. So, they’re getting what they’re comfortable with. There’s a strong perception out there that Rauner has limitless funds. A little reality snap shot stating Quinn may be a bumbler, but he’s not a pauper, might be a good message.
The point is made that Quinn is spending $1 million a week. That’s just about more important than anything else there.
- A guy... - Tuesday, Aug 26, 14 @ 2:26 pm:
In fact, I think I’ll send him $25 in Willie’s name. That will get things rocking.
If you’re going to expound on a “burn rate”, Willie, it would seem to me it wouldn’t even be a factor if you had enough money to spend whatever it takes, i.e. burn rate = who cares?
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Aug 26, 14 @ 2:38 pm:
===If you’re going to expound on a “burn rate”, Willie, it would seem to me it wouldn’t even be a factor if you had enough money to spend whatever it takes, i.e. burn rate = who cares?===
Then why complain about being outspent in a solicitation?
Do you …read … what people comment?
===It’s the Burn Rate of the Rauner campaign cash that warrants the appeal, not the raising of the cash…===
I addressed that money is no object.
Dope.

Billionaire Bruce claiming he’s being outspent 2-1 has as much credibility as saying Gov’s office knew nothing about or is not responsible for the staff assistant hirings.
Bad idea for either side to make those particular claims.

Rauner’s brain has not de-thawed from the ice bucket challenge that’s all I can figure.
- VanillaMan - Tuesday, Aug 26, 14 @ 8:24 pm:
Keep saying this Bruce and you might get enough voters to believe you for that winning margin.
It’s a good way to blunt the attacks about how rich Rauner is.
Even if it is pretty tough to believe!
