Senger up with new TV ad
Tuesday, Oct 7, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller
* As we discussed yesterday, state Rep. Darlene Senger may have a fighting chance against incumbent Democratic Congressman Bill Foster. Rate her new ad…
* Script…
Big spending Bill Foster…
…He’s voted seven times to increase the debt limit…
…While opposing a balanced budget.
Higher taxes, job killing regulations, wasteful spending…
…Bill Foster voted for it all.
I’m Darlene Senger. I’m running for Congress to get Washington to work for us.
We need to cut the debt and lower taxes for families and small businesses.
Darlene Senger opposed governor Quinn’s tax increases.
She’ll fight for us in Congress.
I’m Darlene Senger and I approve this message.

I guess this is one of those “mixed” spots. Hit Foster with generic potboiler, then introduce yourself with generic potboiler.
I rate it a “whatever.” Don’t see anything that flips an undecided, but maybe notifies some of the base that she’s in the race.

Cookie-cutter ad, versions probably up in competitive districts nationwide.
BTW Senger knows full well, as a financial person, that this whining about “voted to raise the debt ceiling” is spurious. Whatever.
She’s smart and a competitor. She can win.

For the Congressional, the in house ads have been way better than NRCC. For the Governor’s race, Rauners ads have been lousy.
I give this a solid B, gets your point across in 30 seconds without talking about dead babies or sex offenders.
- 47th Ward - Tuesday, Oct 7, 14 @ 1:56 pm:
Wow, the triumph oof talking points over logic.
Voting to raise the debt ceiling is not synonymous with increasing spending. A balanced federal budget would be an economic calamity. Annual budget deficits have gone down the past two or three years.
Does she not have a clue about how the federal budget works?
- Big Muddy - Tuesday, Oct 7, 14 @ 1:57 pm:
Senger wins.
To the ad,
Meh.
But meh is all you need against Foster.
- Louis G Atsaves - Tuesday, Oct 7, 14 @ 2:09 pm:
Solid B. Got her points across.
- Cheryl44 - Tuesday, Oct 7, 14 @ 2:15 pm:
After seeing that ad, I don’t think she understands how government spending works.
- Living in Machiaville - Tuesday, Oct 7, 14 @ 2:25 pm:
..”don’t think she understands how government spending works.” That is beside the point. How many viewers understand it? Somewhere between 0 and a few doz. The rest just see that Foster is big spending and wasteful of taxpayers $$. Message sent and received. Simple. Does it change an “independent voters” mind? Given the Foster has a major lack of district/constituent out reach leads one to think he’s open for such attacks. The ad rates B-.
- walker - Tuesday, Oct 7, 14 @ 2:34 pm:
She understands. She’s a financial pro. She’s just using the standard national talking points that resonate for many voters in her district.
- OneMan - Tuesday, Oct 7, 14 @ 2:48 pm:
Not a Foster fan by any stretch, but will say he has been seen around a lot more than he was/is during non-election years. Dude is popping up all over the place as the election approaches.
As for ’she doesn’t understand how budgeting works’
Please point out a single ad anyone does that really treats a policy issue correctly.

=Dude is popping up all over the place as the election approaches.=
Maybe in Joliet or Aurora; don’t believe he knows part of his district is in DuPage. Maybe he’s just conceding DuPage to his opponent.
- Carl Nyberg - Tuesday, Oct 7, 14 @ 3:03 pm:
47th Ward has a point about debt ceiling talking points. It’s complete bunk and everybody who is serious knows it’s bunk.
The responsible people are the ones who take the hard votes, the irresponsible ones are… like Sen. Obama.
- A guy... - Tuesday, Oct 7, 14 @ 3:28 pm:
The ads a pass. A semi-solid one. Foster’s a lousy campaigner. When he is out in the district, he’s boring and has no energy. Darlene is a vigorous campaigner who makes him look older than he really is. She’ll work until the end. He’ll work..maybe.
