Emptying out my in-box

* Simon Edelman’s closer is pretty darned good…
* In other news, Gov. Pat Quinn held a press conference today at a Chicago training center for new school “Safe Passage” workers. Some reporters surmised that it had more to do with politics than with an official governmental event…
* So, they played a little hardball…
While Mayor Rahm Emanuel let politics trump friendship in backing Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn over Republican challenger Bruce Rauner, Quinn didn’t return the favor Friday when asked if Emanuel deserves another term in office.
“I am going to deal with my election on Tuesday, there will be plenty of time to talk about that,” Quinn told reporters after appearing with Emanuel at a training session that turned into a political rally for hundreds of new Safe Passage workers hired by Chicago Public Schools.
* Listen…
* Meanwhile, Rauner is hitting the road. AP…
Former Gov. Jim Edgar will campaign with fellow Republican Bruce Rauner as Rauner makes his final push to become Illinois’ next governor.
Edgar is scheduled to join Rauner Monday in Bloomington, Springfield, Moline, Rockford and the Chicago suburbs. […]
Edgar supported then-state Sen. Kirk Dillard in the GOP primary. He says in a statement Friday that after 12 years of Democratic governors “voters are eager for change” and Rauner is “exactly what Illinois needs.”
* Sun-Times…
In the closing days of toss-up campaigns, Sen. Mark Kirk R-Ill., is stumping with GOP governor nominee Bruce Rauner and former Rep. Bob Dold, R-Ill., at events in his old north suburban House district, turf where Kirk has the strongest coattails.
On Saturday morning, Kirk— a Highland Park resident, in the 10th district — and Rep. Peter Roskam R-Ill. are featured at a Dold get-out-the-vote rally at the Lincolnshire Marriott, in the heart of the 10th congressional district where Dold is in a tight battle with Rep. Brad Schneider D-Ill.
On Monday night, Kirk will be the featured guest at Rauner’s final GOTV rally of the campaign Monday night in the 10th District, which could also provide a boost to Dold. Rauner’s race with Gov. Pat Quinn is winding up in a dead heat.
Kirk is also doing a recorded call targeting suburban voters, urging a vote for Bruce.

No love for Obie out on the trail.

Great Quinn closer. Lots o’fun!
- Under Further Review - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 3:44 pm:
I suppose the producers of “The Simpsons” will protest the use of their animated cartoon on Tuesday.
As for the anti-choice rhetoric, one would have to support abortion on demand with no limitations or restrictions in order to pass the litmus test suggested by the ad. Not even a majority of the SCOTUS would support that any longer and AG Madigan has conceded on parental notification to a degree.
It’s an entertaining spot, but less than truthful.
- Ducky LaMoore - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 3:44 pm:
Jim Edgar campaigning for Rauner doesn’t add to Rauner’s credibility, it subtracts Edgar’s. But, when the most popular governor of Illinois doesn’t want to make a comeback because he makes too much money in the private sector, is it a surprise he would shill for Rauner?
- Abe the Babe - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 3:52 pm:
Simon is a genius.
- Norseman - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 3:54 pm:
Simon Edelman’s closer is hilariously good. Too bad it’s just web.
- Jake From Elwood - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 4:04 pm:
I was with Edelman until Kale was mentioned.
Kale = Fail. LOL
- illini - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 4:04 pm:
So when will any candidates make a “final push” anywhere in Illinois South of Springfield. I will not hold my breath.
I feel slighted and offended, but I guess I will have to rely on the endless robo calls and TV ads from St. Louis to help me make up my mind!!!!!
- Amalia - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 4:09 pm:
perfect. really really perfect. until kale.
- low level - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 4:16 pm:
71 is more fun. Why would you change anything in the IL House? They took tough, fiscally responsible votes on the pension problem-what the Tribune wanted - then good ole mother Trib pulled the rug out from under them after Buddy Bruce complained.
Won’t matter. Trib editorial page hasn’t made a difference in elections in over 20 years. C

Jim Edgar is a full-time University of Illinois employee. Is he going to be campaigning Monday on his state-paid time?
- Under Further Review - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 4:23 pm:
@Ducky:
Has Edgar switched jobs? Since when did teaching classes at Eastern Illinois University become a private sector job?
- Union Leader - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 4:34 pm:
I’ve lost respect for former Governor Edgar.
- Langhorne - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 4:37 pm:
Finale is killer. Like being stung over and over again by wasps.
- Responsa - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 4:39 pm:
Do some people really find that snotty haughty millennial girl in Simon’s over-long web ad to be appealing or convincing? I have no quarrel with the approach itself and using Rauner’s own words against him–that’s fair game. But as the conduit she is just horrible. And don’t tell me this cringe-worthy ad is going to resonate powerfully with young women, or any age of woman for that matter. Sorry.

Governor Edgar serves on a variety of civic and corporate boards of directors.

Jim travels, often to Chicago, to serve on corporate boards (Kemper Insurance, Alberto-Culver and others)
- ThinkTangerine - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 4:43 pm:
I’m a millenial female and I thought the finale ad was hilarious and well-executed. I just wish Quinn had the $ to put it up on the teevee.
- Norseman - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 4:43 pm:
Langhorne, I’d agree with you if it was paid media. Otherwise it’s an amusing piece that you, I and the others who join us here can enjoy.
- Under Further Review - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 4:44 pm:
@Responsa:
She reminded me of Lena Dunham and that is not a positive.
On a different note, I will credit Quinn with exercising caution in not taking a position on the Chicago mayoralty. Emanuel is none too popular in certain precincts where Quinn needs to score big numbers.
- Under Further Review - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 4:47 pm:
@Ducky;
Serving on a corporate board or two is not full-time employment at most businesses. It can be nice work if you can get it, but I think his primary employment is in higher ed (public sector).
- Responsa - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 4:50 pm:
==On a different note, I will credit Quinn with exercising caution in not taking a position on the Chicago mayoralty. ==
My theory on that is that Quinn follows CapFax and soccermom has scared him about opining on anything beyond his job title.
- DuPage - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 4:54 pm:
Hard to believe Edgar lowered himself to Rauner’s
level.
- Wordslinger - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 5:08 pm:
How is Emanuel “supporting” Quinn? Tapping into his massive fundraising network for him?
I’d bet plenty more individual Emanuel donors have kicked in to Rauner than Quinn . Rauner’s the guy that made Emanuel a millionaire. I haven’t noticed any love lost between Emanuel and Quinn.
- Oswego Willy - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 5:09 pm:
Edgar is officially a prop.
The video is genius.
That 10th District better go 60/40 for Rauner after all this closing us ones up there. Otherwise, another waste.
Quinn should have given Rahm some love, Rahm could have been better to Quinn earlier, and more often.
Oh yeah, the lucky charm Edgar…lol. Worth another giggle.
I hope I keep getting calls from Rauner, it’s like “Call me Maybe?”
- buckle up - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 5:10 pm:
In their two minute closer the Quinn folks couldn’t say a SINGLE thing about what Quinn would do as Governor with another term.
Not one.
The guy has been Governor for almost six years and all he has left in the tank is attack ads.
Deplorable.
This pushed me over the edge, I’m voting for Rauner. Quinn is just running on empty. He’s done.
- Precinct Captain - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 5:23 pm:
Abortion on demand? Is that in the premium channels section?
==- buckle up - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 5:10 pm:==
Did you know you can click through to the QFI YouTube channel and see all the closers, positive and negative? Or are you just that stupid?
- Anonymous - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 5:26 pm:
If Rauner is “exactly what Illinois needs”, then why did Edgar support Dillard over Rauner in the primary?
- Been There - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 5:27 pm:
===So when will any candidates make a “final push” anywhere in Illinois South of Springfield.===
Illini, Quinn was in Mt Vernon and Edwardsville today. Rauner is going to be in Marion and Harrisburg tomorrow.
Hope this perks you up
- Under Further Review - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 5:35 pm:
I received a fourth postcard mailing from “Liberty for Illinois” praising Chad Grimm and faulting “pro choice” Bruce Rauner.
All of the emphasis on abortion related issues make me think that the Quinn campaign and its surrogates are worried about the polls indicating that Rauner may have stronger support than expected among suburban women voters. My guess is that trying to manufacture an “anti-choice” issue, which worked wonders for Quinn four years ago, is an effort to frighten some female voters back into the Democratic column on election day by creating doubts where the two major candidates are both pro-choice.
- Amalia - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 6:05 pm:
the young woman in the ad is really good. smart, funny approachable.
- Samurai - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 7:09 pm:
The Edelman video seems to pretty accurately characterize Mr. Rauner.
- Filmmaker Professor - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 8:27 pm:
Edgar will be collecting public pensions from two different systems: he gets his lawmaker pension at the same time as he is earning a SURS pension. Plus, he doesn’t have to teach a single class. he is an occasional special guest. and has his own taxpayer funded private secretary. am i missing anything?
- decaf - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 9:01 pm:
Regarding the snarky tweet by reporter Charles Thomas, I have heard the name Rahm Emanuel mispronounced many times, including by newscasters. So why single out a city worker for something like that?
- Angry Chicagoan - Friday, Oct 31, 14 @ 11:06 pm:
Wonderful Edelman video.
