Another Quinn closer

Monday, Nov 3, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller

* I saw this ad Saturday night in Chicago. Yet another closer TV ad and another traffic change from Gov. Quinn

* Background…

A governor can make a decision that changes everything—in just 30 seconds.

Bruce Rauner says he’ll cut the minimum wage, but not before he gives himself and billionaires like him a $1 million tax break. His budget plan would lay off 1 in 6 teachers.

Governor Pat Quinn will raise the minimum wage, and he’ll never cut our kids’ education to give a tax break to the wealthy.

That’s the choice in this election—you decide.

* And here’s some of what the governor was up to today

I’ve asked he Rauner campaign if they had anything new. I’ll share if they do.

I sure hope it’s a new position on the minimum wage — Rauner hasn’t had one of those in weeks!

  2. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 5:16 pm:

Another “closer”? Both Quinn and Rauner go through “closers” like Sox and Cubs go through closers.

They are both like the house guests that take 40 minutes to say good-bye, leaving your house at 2 am, and all you want is sleep!

  3. - Hotel Ibiza - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 5:23 pm:

To little to late….. Quinn had six years to improve Illinois and failed miserably.

  4. - Ron Burgundy - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 5:25 pm:

Is it just me, or do I think that Rauner could change those things in 30 seconds only if pigs fly and unicorns prance through the General Assembly to allow such bills to get to “Governor Rauner’s” desk?

  5. - Wordslinger - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 5:31 pm:

What a dumb spot. It makes no sense. Decisions aren’t made in :30, spots are produced in :30. They’re different.

Did you think it was clever doing the “Sixty ‘Minutes” thing? Yeah, that’s fresh.

Put the bong away and GOTV.

  6. - walker - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 5:32 pm:

Everything that didn’t make the first cut get’s thrown over the wall now. By both sides.

Out of bullets? Throw rocks. Out of stones? Mud and sticks.

This has been one heckuva wild contest!

  7. - Voice of Reason - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 5:36 pm:

I admit I support Quinn, but just look at his rally compared to Rauner’s in Springfield. Laughable.

  8. - Anonymous - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 5:38 pm:

Prediction: Quinn doubles the counties he wins.

  9. - walker - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 5:41 pm:

===Put the bong away and GOTV===

Didn’t see a lot of A Guy lately. He’s probably following Word’s good advice.

  10. - Under Further Review - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 5:44 pm:

Everybody in poverty, Nobody left out government created misery — Reelect Quinn.

  11. - Norseman - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 5:56 pm:

Yes. As Word said, it’s a dumb spot. It seems to me that Quinn changes decisions every 30 seconds. He’s the last to be extolling his prowess as a decision maker. The only positive about this closer is that there can’t be enough time to add more closers.

  12. - RNUG - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 5:57 pm:

I saw it on TV before Rich posted it here. If you ignore the legislative process required to actually change things, it’s a halfway decent ad that should make the undecided or wavering state retiree rethink voting for Rauner … which i assume is the whole point, to try to pick off a few more votes. If that is the target, I give it a C for creativity but a B or B+ for effectiveness.

  13. - Wordslinger - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 5:58 pm:

UFR, it’s mystifying to me how the vigorous, sunny optimism expressed by you and so many Illinois GOP poohbahs doesn’t translate into victory.

  14. - MrJM - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 6:04 pm:

“Put the bong away and GOTV.”

Chill, man — I can do both.

    – MrJM

  15. - Norseman - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 6:05 pm:

Everybody in is right. Get in the polling place, vote quickly for Oswego Willy and then go in to your home to beat the weather. Since you have to write-in our future Governor’s name, carefully spell it:

    O S W E G O W I L L Y!

  16. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 6:10 pm:

    Thanks - Norseman -, my fear is the thousands, hundreds of thousands, forgetting an “L”, adding an “E”;

You just rolled the Campaign Closer out. Thanks.

    OW

  17. - anonano - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 6:15 pm:

If some of it was true, it would be good.

  18. - Responsa - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 6:26 pm:

I was sort of hoping that Pat Quinn from all his years of government service knew there is a legislature and that governors are not dictators who just “sign” things on a personal whim in thirty seconds. Well, maybe he does know that but is hoping a lot of voters don’t. This ad is disgusting and insulting to all the citizens of IL. and to the lawmakers of IL. in both houses and of both parties. D.

  19. - RNUG - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 7:33 pm:

At this point, truth doesn’t matter. All that matters is moving emotions a bit.

  20. - Will P - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 7:59 pm:

why is raising the minimum wage a priority now? Too many other accomplishments to get it done in the last 6 years?

Quinn and the legislature in this state don’t even pretend that they work for the people. All politics all the time.

  21. - Roadiepig - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 8:12 pm:

I no longer have a land line , but my son has on because of his home business. He has had 8 robocalls , some with different messages, all pro Rauner. He already voted early and voted for the first time for a democratic governor. So wasting time and angering my son for no reason. Stupid !

One more thing ( and prefacing this that I am a lifetime republican who can not vote for Rauner, no matter how much I dislike Quinn and would have voted for ANY decent Rulublican candidate): is it just me or are the bots sounding a lot like certain “news” channel commentators the days leading up to Obama beating Romney, even though they just knew Romney would win. I wouldn’t be so confident (with this tight race) if I was a backer of either governor candidate

  22. - Anon III - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 8:16 pm:

The picture of a Faustian bargain.

  23. - walker - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 8:46 pm:

Best wishes to all tomorrow, and hope it doesn’t stretch out for a week.

  24. - DOI Chef - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 9:18 pm:

And then there’s that federal investigation thingy for Quinn. How’s that for a closer. Rauner should run an ad with a prison door slamming shut. (Voice over) “Do we need any more of this?”

  25. - Under Further Review - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 9:37 pm:

    @DOI Chef:

    Right you are.

Quinn can run out the clock on an election and perhaps fool the voters, but the US Attorney moves according to a different time table. . .

  26. - Norseman - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 10:05 pm:

=== Quinn can run out the clock on an election and perhaps fool the voters, but the US Attorney moves according to a different time table. ===

As they say, I’m not sure there is any there there. The important issue is that Raunervich loses. If there is a crime to be prosecuted so be it. Illinois would be better off with Raunervich and Quinn out of the picture.

  27. - James Knell - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 1:37 am:

Maynard Ferguson’s Street Player… wow. Come to think of it, Quinn is the only Governor I have ever lived under that I actually like. Keep in mind I’ve lived in two other great lake states, and I came to IL in the George Ryan administration. In those two other states there were governors from both parties. Quinn tells the truth about the state budget even though some here don’t want to hear it.

  28. - Del Clinkton - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 7:29 am:

I guess if you like misogynists for Governor, than Bruce is your man!
