This is the business we’ve chosen

Monday, Nov 3, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller

* John Oliver gives us a decidedly liberal take on state legislatures, including an appearance by Rep. Mike Bost (5-minute mark), but it’s worth a watch (some profanity, mostly bleeped) and it’s pretty darned funny

Brief appearances by BFC and Sen Landak as well.

  2. - Anon - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 11:51 am:

I saw Ann Williams too on the list of people who cake walk every two years.

  3. - Downstate Mom - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 11:56 am:

also Barbara Flynn-Currie as “winner” at at the end…

  4. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 11:59 am:

Good piece. Good for Comedy Central.

  5. - Amalia - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 12:01 pm:

think I saw Harmon’s name on the scroll too.

the Bost bit is so funny/sad watching it going national.

  6. - Bored Chairman - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 12:21 pm:

    Hilarious. Interesting. Depressing.

  7. - Precinct Captain - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 12:25 pm:

==Good piece. Good for Comedy Central.==

    Home Box Office.

  8. - chiatty - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 12:33 pm:

Oliver is a talented comic, no doubt.

  9. - Wordslinger - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 12:56 pm:

    You can’t fake funny.

Fox News, Rush and the far-right do most of the work for Oliver, Stewart and Colbert.

    Where’s the right-wing funny show?

  10. - very old soil - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 1:08 pm:

    Fox News

  11. - bdrlgion - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 1:20 pm:

Wordslinger - As long as the GOP is perceived as the party of rich white men, it’s going to be tough. Ripping on “The Establishment” is always funnier.

  12. - The Lowly LA - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 2:01 pm:

They really tapped into the IL Dem unopposed at the end there. I missed Harmon, but caught the aforementioned BFC plus Camille Lilly, Ann Williams and Andre Thapedi.

Wordslinger and bdrlgion: I agree wholeheartedly.

  13. - Skeptic - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 2:20 pm:

There’s no right wing funny and no left wing angry. (or a least not as much) I wonder how the guy that got caught copying ALEC did on his English essays in college…

  14. - Wordslinger - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 2:21 pm:

I’m especially thick today. Just caught the II reference. Hilarious.

I think it was 47 a couple years ago, when the South burbs came up in the news, who did a riff on the Hyman Roth monologue that ended “that kid’s name was Robert Shaw. And the city he invented was Dolton. And there’s not a plaque….”

  15. - Amalia - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 2:53 pm:

“I hate to sound like Billy Baldwin’s agent, but you can’t keep copying everything that Alec does.” priceless.

  16. - Kasich Walker, Jr. - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 3:17 pm:

Maybe I’ll need to pay attention to some other district. Where I am State legislators run mostly unopposed, until redistricting.

  17. - Kasich Walker, Jr. - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 3:26 pm:

….made it to the end of the bit, and I see that was the point of it.

    It’s a Soviet ballot.

  18. - MrJM - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 5:55 pm:

    “Where’s the right-wing funny show?”

    The Benny Hill Show?

  19. - Jorge - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 7:15 pm:

John is the best at this. I always end my weekends with show. Can’t top the master of the dingo.
