Candidate filing begins
Monday, Nov 17, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller
* I don’t know if anybody cares or not, but the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners sent out a list of candidates who filed this morning. Rahm Emanuel was the only major candidate who filed for mayor. And, so far 124 candidates have filed to run in the city’s 50 wards. Click here to see the list. And the Tribune has a brief look at some of the contested races. Click here for that.
I was in the 4th Ward shortly before the election and there were people all over the place with clipboards attempting to get folks onto the ballot.
…Adding… Greg Hinz…
No one yet has filed either for city treasurer or clerk. But a total of 124 candidates is running for alderman, an average of about two and a half for each of the city’s 50 wards, but less than 167 that filed first thing in 2011.
In nine wards that in general are represented by entrenched incumbents, only the incumbent filed. Those are the 12th, 13th, 14th, 30th, 32nd, 40th 42nd, 48th and 50th wards.
No incumbent filed in three wards. Those are the 2nd, in which the current alderman, Fioretti, is running for mayor; and the 36th and 38th wards. Incumbent 38th Ward Ald. Tim Cullerton is retiring, but neighboring Ald. Nicholas Sposato is running in the 36th after his ward was changed very substantially in reapportionment.
In a couple of other aldermanic notes of interest, Patrick Daley Thompson, grandson of Mayor Richard J. Daley and nephew of Mayor Richard M. Daley, filed to run in the family’s 11th Ward Bridgeport fiefdom, as expected. And Lincoln Park Ald. Michele Smith, 43rd, drew two challengers with the possibility of more to come.

I would like to dedicate this song to Rahm. http://youtu.be/JkWGs2R5p6w

Would have loved to see Karen Lewis run against Emanuel.
So would have Quinn. That would have been a lot bigger spark than advisory ballot questions.
The buzz over Harold challenging Byrne in February 1983 almost won Adlai the mansion in November 1982. That’s the only reason that race was close, and shockingly so.

You mean Billy Kelly wasn’t in line to file for mayor?
- anon 2.0 - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 2:51 pm:
Billy Kelly will file last under the Dan Proft candidate filing plan.
- admin - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 2:54 pm:
@Anon - you mean Oswego Willy wasn’t in line for Mayor?
- admin - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 2:55 pm:
Anon 2.0 - why would Proft file when he has a cushy brokered time deal courtesy of Dick UIhlein on WLS? Nothing else could explain those HORRIFIC ratings.
- Gooner - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 2:57 pm:
Of course Billy Kelley was never going to file. He’s doing this politics things for other reasons. He doesn’t want to actually be on the ballot.
A few notes –
Interesting that Fioretti was not there at 9:00 a.m. He’s had to know he was running for two years, and yet he doesn’t have the organization to get it done?
In the wards, a few stand out –
Anne Shaw is going to be a tough challenger in the First Ward.
In the second, five candidates filed at 9:00. Two of them are probably the class of the field (Hopkins and Pattison), but it is impressive that three others had enough of an organization to get things done. That is going to be good race.
Arena v. Garrido should be good too.
Interesting that nobody filed today to take on Pawar or Silverstein. I suspect a good campaign could defeat either of them.
- anon 2.0 - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 2:57 pm:
In 2010 he filed last thinking he’d get a boost.
- admin - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 3:00 pm:
@Gooner - You mean Bob Fioretti wasn’t in line to file for mayor? Fioretti was never going to file. He does this politics thing for other reasons.
- 47th Ward - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 3:04 pm:
===I suspect a good campaign could defeat either of them.===
I can’t speak to Silverstein’s chances, but I think Pawar is solid. He burrowed in pretty deep and people around the ward still give him pretty good marks. He votes with Rahm, but not all the time, and he’s independent enough to discourage a challenge from the left. Plus he works pretty hard. He may still draw a challenger, and I heard of someone else circulating, but I don’t think he’ll have a big fight on his hands.
- Ravenswood Right Winger - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 3:05 pm:
@Gooner: Supposedly this guy is running against Pawar. http://www.fiedlerforthe47.com/home.html
P.S. Are you an Arsenal supporter?
- anon - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 3:14 pm:
Willy has higher aspirations. Plus, there is that residency thingy!
- Gooner - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 3:16 pm:
Ravenswood Right Winger,
Yes, and there are actually at least two other Arsenal supporters here. At times, we’ve been known to hijack threads. It is an interlull though now, so we’ve been quiet for a week or so.
- Joe Maddon - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 3:19 pm:
William Kelly didn’t file for two simple reasons .
1. Not enough signatures
2. He would get slaughtered wouldn’t even get 5 percent
- regular democrat - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 3:20 pm:
Little surprised oconnor didn’t have a challenger
- Oswego Willy - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 3:30 pm:

I can’t really comment, - Norseman - handles all questions, especially about my future, however, to say you are probably correct would be more correct than not.
I said too much.
- s - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 3:31 pm:
I wonder how Patrick Thompson would do if he couldn’t get his middle name (his uncles’s last name) printed on the ballot. Kinda hoping a decent candidate emerges to give skippy silver spoon a race there
- Hacksaw Jim - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 3:32 pm:
=== No one yet has filed either for city treasurer or clerk. ===
Surprised Mendoza didn’t file yet.
- Anonymous - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 3:35 pm:
If I’m Summers or Mendoza (or any candidate without serious opposition), I file the last day and give any opponents less time to review petitions. Ballot position won’t matter in races like those.
- Cheryl44 - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 3:39 pm:
I’m also in the 47th, and am supposed to go to the CTA meeting tonight to support bringing back the 11. I got an email about it from my alderman.
- Rhino Slider - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 3:43 pm:
I hope the number of candidates doubles. It would be good for Chicago.
Kelly says he is doing his radio show for the next 10 weeks. I don’t think he is running for Mayor.
- anon - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 3:47 pm:
Willy, can we quote you on your quote? Rumors are flying, I think it would be a good idea to hold a presser.
- Oswego Willy - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 3:52 pm:
- anon -,
You can run with my non-statement, but if I were you, - Norseman - will have the official statement when the timing works. Thank you fur your consideration in this sensitive matter.
To the Post,
Ward races are as grass roots as they come. Filing first, last, 9th, many times your neighbors and friends know of or heard of the front-runners and it comes down to the streets more than punch numbers.
- Joe Maddon - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 3:56 pm:
What radio show does Kelly have?
- Gooner - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 4:10 pm:
Joe M,
Doesn’t he purchase time to air some show? I thought that was his deal. Maybe he can tell us.
One other note — he didn’t he bust the caps by writing himself a check?
Anybody know if that still applies when he doesn’t file?
- Joe Maddon - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 4:14 pm:
Did he actually put a check in the account that went through the bank and cleared , that’s the question?
- anon - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 4:18 pm:
Willy, you say that is a non-statement but we view it as a statement. So, we are going with it online and in print tomorrow. We called Norseman and we had to leave a VM, hopefully he gets back to us soon.
- Oswego Willy - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 4:29 pm:
- anon -,
I’m comfortable with that, if something changes and you get it wrong, note I told you to hold off. Your call.
With all these candidates, what is the over/under on runoffs?
- Jaded - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 4:38 pm:
Nope don’t care, but always appreciate the information.
- ZC - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 6:36 pm:
Of course fewer candidates filed. The signature requirements went way up this year.
- PublicServant - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 7:11 pm:
Has McKinney been hired by someone yet?
- low level - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 7:27 pm:
The Chicago City Council has become the most useless legislative body in the free world. 85% of that stuff - street closures, awnings, tag days, could be done via bureaucratic channels - and it is anyway, they just insist on voting on it.
The real stuff, bond ordinances, anything where money is spent - most don’t bother with anyway.
- admin - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 8:27 pm:
@Joe Madden
Joe Madden didn’t file because:
1. No one knows who he is
2. No one knows who he is.
- Lame Duck - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 8:55 pm:
In 43 Smith has twice the cash the other candidates have combined. Oh yeah she also has Rahm. She wins in a cake walk on Feb 24.
- Rory - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 9:53 pm:
We got a robo call tonight asking what we would think of “Quinn vs Emanauel” for mayor.
Quinn!!
- RoPo Ranger - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 10:38 pm:
===Little surprised oconnor didn’t have a challenger===
Dianne Daleiden is running against O’Connor in the 40th. She just hasn’t filed yet.
- Political Observer - Monday, Nov 17, 14 @ 10:51 pm:
I would not underestimate the Mayoral Candidacy of Frederick Collins, who is a dynamic speaker and is a non-stop Energizer Bunny on the Campaign Trail. Frederick has quite a following at this time.
- William j Kelly - Tuesday, Nov 18, 14 @ 8:26 am:
If pat Quinn put a full page add in the Trib and sun times asking people to download a petition, sign it, notarize it and deliver it to him; I bet he would have enough signatures to run for mayor.
