Dancing on a grave that isn’t even a grave

Tuesday, Feb 3, 2015 - Posted by Rich Miller

* From the NRCC…

Hey there,

Remember the unbelievable news that former Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon was reportedly considering a bid for Congress, despite her ties to failed former Governor Pat Quinn?

It turns out, after testing the waters for a few weeks, Simon is not anxious to jump into the race. Today, Roll Call reported that she has rebuffed Democratic recruitment efforts, saying she was “not actively pursuing it.” Simon even went a step further, comparing campaigning to childbirth and that “it’s not something to jump back into right away.”

Simon certainly does not sound like somebody who wants to run. Perhaps Sheila Simon has finally realized that being besties with politically-toxic Pat Quinn will make running for office again a bigger challenge than she ever realized. Then again, Simon must know that in Southern Illinois, being recruited by Nancy Pelosi is just as toxic as being Pat Quinn’s protégé.

NRCC Comment: “Southern Illinois families have had enough of Sheila Simon and Pat Quinn’s failed policies. Democrats will need to step up their recruiting because 12th district voters know better than to send a Pat Quinn protégé to Washington.” – NRCC Spokesman Zach Hunter

That’s really over the top. Apparently, some DC types can’t resist taking shots at people who aren’t even candidates and probably wouldn’t have ever been a candidate.

Sheesh.

I’m no fan of Sheila Simon, but there is an arrogance to the piece that makes me want to write a big check to whoever the Democrats nominate for that seat.

  2. - PMcP - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 1:11 pm:

Maybe I’m an idealist, but why does such juvenile writing get associated, with what should be, very intellectual decision-making processes. It’s like we’re electing people to audition for the Mean Girls sequel.

  3. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 1:13 pm:

There isn’t a single shred of intelligence in the entire statement.

Reading it left me completely duck-faced.

  4. - OneMan - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 1:13 pm:

Both of the congressional committees have the same PR bot working for them…

  5. - Formerly Known As... - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 1:14 pm:

They also jumped on her almost immediately after the election.

Good riddance to Mrs Simon, but too much, too soon.

  6. - A guy - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 1:20 pm:

She self-destructed. Why breathe any life into dead political careers. Poor move.

  7. - vole - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 1:22 pm:

Because, obviously, southern Illinois has been best served by the winger ideologues like Shimkus who have done so much for bringing prosperity to Egypt. Its written in the scriptures.

  8. - Stones - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 1:23 pm:

Agreed she is not the best candidate by any means but she abandoned Quinn.

  9. - Wordslinger - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 1:28 pm:

I’m guessing maybe there’s a minimum quota on releases that NRCC staffers have to put out? Performance measurables?

  10. - Streator Curmudgeon - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 1:39 pm:

Even the NRCC has to take a breather from demonizing Obama.

Dr. Goebbels would have enjoyed that “news” release.

  11. - Archiesmom - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 1:46 pm:

Politics is a lot less fun now that venom is routinely injected into every comment or issue, no matter how insignificant. I miss the good old days of honest debate and accurate discussion of facts.

  12. - And I Approved This Message - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 1:48 pm:

This is what they said just a couple of weeks ago:

“Southern Illinois families have already been hurt enough by the policies of Sheila Simon and Pat Quinn. The last thing folks need is the out-of-touch Quinn-Simon agenda wreaking havoc on them from Washington.” – Katie Martin Prill, NRCC Spokeswoman.

These spokeskids need to get a hold of A Child’s Glossary of Adjectives and find some new words.

  13. - Hakuna Matata - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 1:48 pm:

Well evidently they are not paying attention to what Rauner is doing, because he is making Quinn look good.

  14. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 1:49 pm:

Mentored by Quinn? And her Father was who? Pee Wee Herman? A fool wrote this piece. A fool who is perpetrating the constant negativity of what politics has become in the 21st Century.

    !!!

  17. - Demoralized - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 1:55 pm:

The NRCC has an unhealthy obsession with Sheila Simon. Who are the dopes over there advising them to make her and issue? I’m pretty sure there are real targets they should be going after. If they think Sheila Simon is one then they need to re-evaluate themselves.

  18. - dupage dan - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 1:56 pm:

Did Simon really equate an election campaign to giving birth?

I don’t know what to do with such a statement.

However, I have heard that there is a form of amnesia that settles in over a period of time.

  19. - Ghostbusters - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 1:56 pm:

Remember the unbelievable news that nobody cares what these waste of pixels NRCC Mad Libs say?

  20. - Obamas Puppy - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 2:06 pm:

That tells me they are worried about her running.

  21. - Precinct Captain - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 2:13 pm:

The idiocy of this release is stunning.

  22. - Westward - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 2:22 pm:

Wouldn’t have even know about this if you didn’t post it. Slow day?

  23. - train111 - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 2:24 pm:

We all pooh pooh this press release, but keep in mind it isn’t meant for our consumption. The NRCC is sending it out to their true believing contributors (the ones who will buy any tripe that the NRCC writes as gospel fact) in an effort to troll for dollars. The crazier and more panicked it sounds ,the better the chance that a true believer will open up their checkbook and send some bucks their way.

  24. - Ghost - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 2:32 pm:

Not a big Simon fan. To her credit she got a lot more votes then i expected

  25. - Roadiepig - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 2:34 pm:

    train111:

Ding ding ding- we have a winner!

Red meat for the masses, minus any nutritional value. Gotta keep that money train rolling (and it goes for both parties, not just the Republicans. )

  26. - Amalia - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 2:44 pm:

maybe it’s about her and making sure she continues to be demonized so she’s damaged goods. she came so much closer to winning than anyone expected, so time to make sure she does not rise up and win something the Republicans want.

  27. - Joe Bidenopolous - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 2:50 pm:

“That tells me they are worried about her running”

    +1

===The NRCC is sending it out to their true believing contributors (the ones who will buy any tripe that the NRCC writes as gospel fact) in an effort to troll for dollars. ===

Well, the statement does contain the words “Nancy Pelosi.” That’s just red meat tin foil hat types.

  29. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 2:50 pm:

Dancing on a grave that isn’t even a grave

That can’t be dancing. Its more like what you see when someone gets tased. Instead of dancing, he is kind of like twitching and urinating through his Gap khakis.

===The NRCC is sending it out to their true believing contributors (the ones who will buy any tripe that the NRCC writes as gospel fact) in an effort to troll for dollars. ===

  31. - John Parnell - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 3:11 pm:

So much for bipartisanship in Congress. Must be some new staffers repeating what they learned in college.

  32. - Precinct Captain - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 3:39 pm:

    ==- VanillaMan - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 2:50 pm:==

  33. - DaBears - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 4:22 pm:

Stay classy, Republicans. It’s going to be a long 2-4 years in the Land of Lincoln.

  34. - horse w/ no name - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 4:25 pm:

It’s crap like this that makes it hard to defend the business of electoral politics. A totally unnecessary and cheap shot that has no real tactical value and does nothing but make some smart ass button up punk with Karl Rove posters over his bed feel better about his sad life.

  35. - Filmmaker Professor - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 4:37 pm:

Quinn “toxic”? Really? I strongly suspect there is going to be a complete reassessment of his reign once Gov Rauner’s policies take hold.

  36. - Del Clinkton - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 5:41 pm:

“Southern Illinois families” with their jobs program called Prisons. Union Prison Jobs. And they voted for Bruce who wants to get rid of their Unions.

    Think…Southern Illinois…before you vote.

  37. - scholar athlete - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 6:21 pm:

This is why politics today attracts the worst people. No serious person would run in a system that values neither seriousness nor ideas. At some point the political system will bottom out and people will say “enough!” If it could work in Northern Ireland it can work here. I just hope the wait isn’t 350 years like there.

  38. - ??? - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 6:38 pm:

“Besties?” Did a 15-year-old write that?

  39. - Enough - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 9:18 pm:

The NRCC is showing exceptionally poor taste and they HAVE to be lying to boot. There is NO way the DCCC or “the Democrats” are recruiting Sheila Simon to run for Congress. If the DCCC is wooing anyone for that race it is State Rep Jerry Costello, Jr. trying to get him to run to retake his dad’s old congressional seat of so many years.

  40. - Harry - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 10:17 pm:

NRCC really lame—they act as if they’re terrified of her

  41. - research addict - Tuesday, Feb 3, 15 @ 10:53 pm:

Maybe 16-year old - Georgia native, Zach is in his first cycle as Regional Press Secretary for the NRCC, covering West and Midwest regions. Previously he worked as Communications Director for Congressman Adam Kinzinger of Illinois and Deputy Press Secretary at the American Action Network.

  42. - VanillaMan - Wednesday, Feb 4, 15 @ 8:44 am:

Yup - it seems that we have an ignorant kid playing politics here.

Its like seeing Jody Foster’s character in “Taxi Driver”, or Brooke Shields in “Pretty Baby”.

Yuk - someone get a hook and get him off the Net.
