Munger learning fast
Tuesday, Feb 17, 2015 - Posted by Rich Miller * Last week, Illinois Comptroller Leslie Munger decided to stand with the state constitution and laws (and public employee unions) against her party’s governor. Munger wasn’t supported by a single union in her 2014 state House bid, but she’s obviously not holding a grudge. The appointed GOP incumbent capped her week by attending Equality Illinois’ Valentines Day event - the only statewide Republican official to show for the gay rights gala. Running in 2016 isn’t going to be easy for any Republican here, but she’s proving to be a quick study.

There’s a lesson in there for Rauner somewhere, I wonder what it is?
- Norseman - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 11:26 am:
Do I see the wisdom of Judy’s staffers guiding this new official? Kinda like Judy watching from heaven to make sure the Comptroller’s office she left unexpectedly is in good hands.
- Anonymiss - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 11:28 am:
Happy Valentine’s Day, Judy. We miss you.
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 11:29 am:
If Comptroller Munger listens and works with the existing Infastructure in place, and together work real hard at staking her own claim, while understanding what makes Republican statewide winners,…win, Munger can be tough to beat.
Kudos all the way around; to Munger and Crew.

==There’s a lesson in there for Rauner==
He just solidly won a statewide election for Governor. The real lesson is that there’s more than one path to success.
- wndycty - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 11:34 am:
As a Democrat I can say if she continues to behave as Judy would she could be a tough incumbent to beat in 2016.

===He just solidly won a statewide election for Governor. The real lesson is that there’s more than one path to success.===
There is.
Gotta find another Pat Quinn to use it…other than that…
- John A Logan - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 11:35 am:
Tree Stand…Rauner’s path was only possible because he has more money than Fort Knox. Munger is taking the right steps to win election, especially if your not a gazillionaire.

So did Rod, twice, but his success rate with the GA was not so good. You can bully your way for a while, but not forever.
- Frenchie Mendoza - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 11:50 am:
Munger’s serving the public. This public — and I know this is hard for a lot of folks to understand — includes state employees.
Rauner is serving dubious partisan ideology — something that has nothing to do with authentic public service.
- Formerly Known As... - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 12:02 pm:
Following the JBT example.
- Wensicia - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 12:05 pm:
Munger has shown she takes her appointed office seriously and is ready to prove she represents and serves all the citizens of Illinois.
The man who appointed her has done the exact opposite.
- Wordslinger - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 12:08 pm:
The lesson for Rauner is that he’s governor of all the people, not just the 50.27 percent that voted for him.
- efudd - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 12:27 pm:
Ms. Munger, you keep this up and you’ll get this Democrat’s vote.
- Anon - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 12:45 pm:
Any update on the Friday, 4:15 “operational solution” press release? Have the state agencies officially been told they must steal, I mean, set aside the fair share dues?
- Annon3 - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 12:47 pm:
She is smart and has a job with pretty narrow parameters. This should not be a shock.
- Black Ivy - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 12:54 pm:
Kudos to Governor Rauner for appointing this apparently independent “quick study”…
- Precinct Captain - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 12:55 pm:
This is a solid start.
- Demoralized - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 12:56 pm:
She better be careful. The ultra-conservative wing of the Republican Party will be out with knives over her association with *gasp* gay people.
- VanillaMan - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 1:37 pm:
The gay ship sailed a few years ago.
So your argument is very 2010.
- Huh? - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 1:48 pm:
The lesson for the car hart jacket is to make sure that the politician you bought stays bought.
Apparently, Ms. Munger can think for herself. Interesting development.
- DuPage - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 2:05 pm:
It would be poetic justice if Munger wins her next election and Rauner loses his.
- chiatty - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 3:00 pm:
Well done, rookie!
- Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 3:18 pm:
Munger did the right thing. She is not going to put the legal cart in front of the horse and break the law, the way Rauner is doing.
The U.S. Supreme Court may rule on fair share fees, but it should be based on plaintiffs who believe they were personally aggrieved, not this sham of a lawsuit filed by a multimillionaire who is about the worst example of someone who’s been harmed by union fair share fees.
- scott aster - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 3:42 pm:
Big deal……..has she done anything to inprove the operation of the Comp office. That is an operational office the last time I looked.
- Roamin' Numeral - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 3:49 pm:
==Big deal==
It is a big deal. Topinka was successful at making inroads with constituencies that typically voted for Democrats in high numbers. If Munger is able to do the same thing, it will help her a lot. Especially in a presidential year.
- Levois - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 7:23 pm:
Excuse me, is there legislation in place for Munger to run again in 2016?
- good cop bad cop - Tuesday, Feb 17, 15 @ 8:58 pm:
Rauner is softening the electorate with an extreme push to the right. This paves the way for her down the road. Rauner knows he is one term change guy. Munger makes out on the deal moving the legislature to middle right. Nothing happens by accident in these circles. Don’t take the bait.
