*** UPDATED x1 - NWMC didn’t advance *** Makanda: Oops!

Monday, Apr 20, 2015 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Some commenters were flabbergasted when Makanda’s village board unanimously passed Gov. Bruce Rauner’s “Turnaround Agenda” resolution earlier this month. The tiny village is a very liberal town and the former residence of US Sen. Paul Simon.

Well, it turns out that village board members aren’t anti-union, they just lack reading comprehension

Makanda’s village president said the board did not mean to endorse Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposed local right-to-work zones where he seeks to allow voters to decide whether to disband closed union shops in the communities where they live.

Village President Tina Shingleton said board members thought they were simply signaling the village’s desire for more local control and autonomy from the state when it passed a two-page resolution supporting Rauner’s so-called “Turnaround Agenda.”

She said the board had no intention of making a political statement about collective bargaining when the April 6 vote made Makanda one of 19 local governments to have endorsed the resolution. It is the first community to sign off on the resolution in heavily unionized Southern Illinois, where even many conservatives are proud union members of, for example, the coal mines, steel mills, state prisons and public schools. […]

“None of us are anti-union and we don’t want to see jobs taken away from anybody,” she said, noting that she is currently in the process of determining whether a vote to revoke support of the resolution in whole or part is in order.

But how could they miss this language?…

Whereas voters in our community should be allowed to decide via referendum whether or not employees should be forced to join a union or pay dues as a condition of employment…

Sheesh. And some believe state legislators are lazy.

* Meanwhile, the IFT has a list of upcoming Rauner resolution votes

*** UPDATE *** I asked the Northwest Municipal Conference if they’d taken a position on the governor’s draft resolution…

Rich:

The topic of the turnaround agenda was placed on the Northwest Municipal Conference Board’s April 8 agenda for discussion. There was no call from our members to advance a supporting resolution.

Larry Bury
Deputy Director
Northwest Municipal Conference

Not what the governor’s office wanted to hear, I imagine.

Further evidence that legalizing Southern Illinois homegrown could be an economic boon to the region.

    No email from “ck”

    No cheerful “Hi Rich-”

No major watershed win to tout?

Maybe all these entitles have a bad case of the “Mondays”?

    “thanks”…,

I give credit to the Rauner team — it’s a pretty neat tactic to ‘decentralize’ discussion of their agenda. It is clearly working (lots of local electeds are debating and dealing with the proposal who otherwise would not be engaged at all), even if the opposition is racking up more wins.

As someone who has visited Makanda’s funky arts district several times, I was surprised that they did vote for Rsuner’s anti-Union manifesto. After reading this post, now I understand that they were just “confused”.

Considering today is 4/20, let’s hope the Makanda board isn’t meeting to reconsider their mistakes- the yeas and nays might get mixed up once again.

Makanda is a great little town. Love Vulture Fest, and the monument to Boomer.

No one ever went broke underestimating the American public. Rauner sure didn’t. We now have a Governor that has gone on record as saying “all jobs don’t have to be in America.” This is in addition to Blago that thought it was “unfortunate that we have a Constitution.” What have we become as an electorate to give these people the keys to the car?

    Makanda moment.

I hope Naperville has the common sense to vote this down. I like the town and would hate to have to avoid staying there on my trips to visit Chicago.

  10. - Bobby Hill - Monday, Apr 20, 15 @ 11:08 am:

To me the vote stands as taken until they revoke, rescind, re-vote, amend or pass a measure contrary.

The fact that they look stupid can’t be rescinded.

  12. - Arsenal - Monday, Apr 20, 15 @ 11:11 am:

Man, really speaks highly of the careful consideration that is being put into this issue.

  13. - Nick Neato - Monday, Apr 20, 15 @ 11:16 am:

I predict Downers Grove (Naperville neighbor) will be on this list shortly. Once the new Village Council is seated. Can’t wait to see how those Dems the DGTRO slated will react to union busting on their first day.

When will he take it to the Walter Payton College Prep debate team for a vote?

Or maybe no municipal boards meet on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Call it a hunch. OY OW. lol

  17. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Apr 20, 15 @ 11:55 am:

    Oh - A Guy -,

I’m mocking the idea of the daily email. It’s embarrassingly sad to think that these ones and twos are emailed.

    That’s the mocking.

Don’t worry, Rauner didn’t lose any either, lol

  18. - DuPage Grandma - Monday, Apr 20, 15 @ 11:58 am:

Naperville had a huge turn over on their City Council. Of the 9 office holders,(8 Councilmen and 1 Mayor), who will vote on the Turn Around Agenda, only 3 will hold office after May 3rd, Inauguration Day. Interesting they are voting on it now.

  19. - A guy - Monday, Apr 20, 15 @ 12:19 pm:

OW, I think the tally is goofy myself. I’ve said so. I’ve also seen commenters ask for it here, which might be why it’s here and why the guy who pays no attention to the news has asked someone to forward info to the tally. Have no idea why we’re doing this. At least upon that we agree. It’s dopey x however many days we continue to revisit it.
    thanks,
    ag

  20. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Apr 20, 15 @ 12:33 pm:

No, - A Guy -, if Rauner feels compelled to make his case town to town, muni to muni, etc., let’s see how Rauner is doing.

I am mocking the idea of this plan of this resolution bit will actually be the catalyst in Rauner’s “Turnaround Agenda”.

Unless it’s 100%, it’s s losing way to gain momentum.

That the Press Shop now has to say “Madeupville” passed the Resolution, wasting time on a politically losing exercise, and some poor person in the Press Shop needs to tout it, that is embarrassingly pathetic, and those working on this, this isn’t turning around Illinois, it’s hoping another town doesn’t embarrass the governor.

Stop the whole Dopey thing, or please o’ please, keep email these Dopey results. The mockibg of the process is delicious.

Gotta be deflating being stuck working for the governor in the most utterly useless exercise to shake up or bring back, or actually making a difference. Not one GA vote has flipped, or will flip, due to these resolutions.

Gives me chuckle, for that I thank them, lol

Are these the “big results” subscribers were promised?

  22. - Pius - Monday, Apr 20, 15 @ 1:35 pm:

Here is the latest on the “Turnaround Agenda” for the Champaign County Board: http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2015-04-19/kacich-rauner-sirois-and-mayoral-spending.html

  23. - Keyser Soze - Monday, Apr 20, 15 @ 1:53 pm:

Is the stuff (de facto) legal in Makanda? If not, try it, it could boost the local economy.

  24. - the Patriot - Monday, Apr 20, 15 @ 4:28 pm:

“But how could they miss this language?…”

If you take a deeper look into the Makanda economy and specifically their most popular cash crop…it is a bit easier to comprehend….little less puff fellas, little more give.

  25. - Makanda - Monday, Apr 20, 15 @ 5:11 pm:

Makanda home of US Senator Paul Simon and Lt Governor Lisa Simon. Need I say more?
