Question of the day

Wednesday, Jun 24, 2015 - Posted by Rich Miller

* This guy is really gonna be missed

Republican state Rep. Mike Tryon announced that he will not seek re-election next year, ending a 12-year run representing McHenry County in the General Assembly.

Tryon, of Crystal Lake, cited his belief in term limits as the primary reason for stepping down, as well as a desire to spend more time with his family. He said it would be “disingenuous” of him as a Republican to support term limits – a cornerstone of new Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposed agenda – yet serve beyond 12 years in Springfield.

“I’ve always supported a 12-year term limit, and I think there’s some commitment to that policy if you really are a supporter of it. I’ll be 61 at the end of this term, I own two businesses, I have my first grandchild on the way, and it’s time for me to focus on that. I’ll have no shortage of things to do,” Tryon said.

* Here he is on the left, playing with the Boat Drink Caucus

* The Question: Caption?

Somehow, I believe the Drink Boat Caucus will live on. Will their be a talent hunt in Springfield?

I know this is not a caption, but this is sad… he’ll definitely be missed.

Both Tryon and Sen. Sullivan will be missed in Springfield. And its scary to think about who will replace Tryon.

  8. - Mama - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 3:01 pm:

Rep. Mike Tryon with the Boat Drink Caucus singing the Budget Blues. Another rep is flying the coop. Best wishes on your retirement.

“Wait, are we playing ‘Werewolves of London’ or ‘Sweet Home Alabama’? I always get those two songs confused.”

  10. - nona - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 3:03 pm:

It’s good to see someone who practices what he preaches, in this case about the desirability of term limits. I wonder how many of his colleagues who are now for term limits will follow Mike’s example?

“If Chad tells that story again about how we got backstage at Phases of the Moon I’m gonna scream.”

  12. - Just saying... - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 3:07 pm:

A solid well informed, thoughtful, and independent conservative lawmaker who could get things done. His district should be fearful of a hand picked ultra conservative (Proft, Uhlein, Rauner) type mouthpiece…

  36. - Concerned - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 3:52 pm:

how ironic that the day the Daily Herald announces that Skillicorn might run against Tryon, Tryon says he’s not runnng again. I really hope it’s because of what he says and not that he’s afraid of that joke Skillicorn. Hopefully McHenry Co will start looking for a replacement and give Alan a challenge.

  37. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 3:54 pm:

===how ironic that the day the Daily Herald announces===

I’ve known about this retirement for a few weeks at least. I respected his right to announce it on his own because I like the guy so much.

  38. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 3:55 pm:

…Now, please get back to the caption contest.

  39. - Duke of earl - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 4:03 pm:

    Grandpa’s can’t wear blue jeans!

  40. - anonymous - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 4:25 pm:

So happy for him, so sad for Springfield. A truly nice, smart, normal person here for all the right reasons.

  41. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 4:27 pm:

    === A truly nice, smart, normal===

You had me until that last word.

    lol

Actually, you’re right. He is just a guy. That’s one reason why I like him so much. He’s just so unassuming.

  42. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 4:27 pm:

Playing lead and leading by example

  43. - Huh? - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 4:28 pm:

“Not only do I get to play in this awesome band and wear this ugly shirt, but now I also get to vote for a tax increase!”

  50. - Man Club - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 5:31 pm:

Another good moderate republican. Bad for Illinois.

  51. - Six Degrees of Separation - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 5:40 pm:

For some reason, Alice Cooper popped into my head. The obvious choice would be the song “Elected”, but since he is observing the spirit of term limits, a few lyrics of “The Ballad of Dwight Fry” would be more appropriate.

I was gone for all those days
But I was not all alone
I made friends with a lot of people
    In the danger zone

    followed by repeated cries of

Ya gotta let me out of here
    Let me outta here
    I gotta get outta here
    I gotta get outta here

  52. - 13thone - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 5:51 pm:

I wonder if the Governor or any member of his entourage will be releasin a statement takin credit for scarin away another reasonable member of the General Assembly? Have a great day!:^)

  53. - Anonin' - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 6:13 pm:

    Cashin the check

  54. - Commonsense in Illinois - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 6:36 pm:

Louie Louie…yep that’s the entire repertoire…wait, what’s that last chord again?

  55. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 8:33 pm:

    Long may you run.

  56. - Gooner - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 8:55 pm:

That contradiction never bothered Bill Brady.

In any case, although I don’t agree with term limits, it is great to see somebody who advocates for them applying them to himself. That takes guts. Very impressive.

  57. - Amalia - Wednesday, Jun 24, 15 @ 9:17 pm:

    Rock on!
