Too bad the violent thunderstorm that hit Springfield was about 12 hours early. It would’ve made a great backdrop to Rauner’s doom and gloom spiel.

  2. - Greg - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 7:48 am:

Good to see you back Rich. Take care of yourself.

Hats off to Barton for taking up the slack.

  3. - Cheswick - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 7:54 am:

Early this morning, a Springfield radio personality ridiculously asked the governor about Donald Trump. Bruce Rauner doesn’t know what Donald Trump is saying. Or care. Bruce Rauner only knows and cares what’s in Bruce Rauner’s realm and that is breaking unions (and all that entails). Period. Hopefully, the Springfield radio person was just trying to fill air time. Otherwise, pathetic question by Springfield media.

  4. - Grandson of Man - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 8:06 am:

“Bruce Rauner doesn’t know what Donald Trump is saying.”

Bruce Rauner doesn’t read the news. He doesn’t have to. He.Just.Knows.

  5. - Bill Edley - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 8:31 am:

I don’t know whether Gov. Rauner, the Republican Party, or both are behind the strategy of continuing to personalize State Government by attacking Speaker Madigan but it’s dumb move. There is a rich history of Republican screw-ups starting with Jim Thompson, his appointed Secretary of State and later Governor Jim Edgar, and the last Republican Governor George Ryan.
It doesn’t take much research to tie the problems Illinois faces to that crew.
We should be facing up to Illinois’ problems today, and put aside the blame game.

  6. - Stones - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 8:35 am:

Where is the funding for this year’s State Fair coming from?

  7. - burbanite - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 8:38 am:

Will they override the veto on Gov’s day?

  8. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 8:43 am:

Cover “the #1 problem” in white duct tape, then it makes more sense

  9. - Cheswick - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 8:55 am:

The governor bid $61,000 for the champion steer at the fair yesterday. And won! How does that work when it’s time to pay? Does he call up the “trustee” of his blind-not-blind trust and tell him to write a check?

  10. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 9:00 am:

    How embarrassingly pathetic.

    Amanda Vinicky tweets a picture of ;

“The #1 Problem Facing Illinois Is ‘Michael Madigan’”

It’s truly, “Fire Madigan, 2.0″ while the threat of an override hangs over the Director’s Lawn as Rauner’s only hope is to, you guessed it “Fire Madigan”

What a complete lack of understanding the powers of ANY Illinois governor in the processes of governing.

But, if your only purpose in being Governor is to dismantle collective bargaining, I’m sure it makes sense.

    What a waste.

  11. - Wordslinger - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 9:12 am:

I see ILGO has negative mailers out on Martinez,
Guzzardi and Damico. I take it they’ll be bankrolling primary opponents as well.

    Otherwise, what’s fhe point?

  12. - AC - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 9:17 am:

We need more tired old messages, perhaps involving dead voters, but what I’m really waiting for are bumper stickers that say:

“The #1 Problem Facing Illinois Is Chicago”

    and

“The #1 Problem Facing Illinois Is Springfield”

Obviously they’ll have to be careful where they distribute them.

  13. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 9:21 am:

You can’t beat someone with no one.

IllinoisGO is… Raunerite politics moving into Phase 2; Infiltrate Democratic politics while masquerading as a Republican governor, feign acknowledgement.

Rauner is a Raunerite. Rauner wants his own Caucuses. Rauner owns 2 Caucuses, now it’s about dismantling the other 2.

If Rauner would admit he wants the Blago dream, I’d back off. “Why?”? Thinking people are fools, as opposed to being truthful is the bigger “sin” in this very specific instance.

Own it. It’s not about the GOP, it’s Rauner saying, “it’s all about me!”

  14. - LINK - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 10:17 am:

On a side note (but relevant to the OT Session), I just tried to make my first call ever in my 60 years-plus to my State Senator Sam McCann) to voice my support for an override of the veto for SB1229 and was transferred to a voicemail box that was full. As he has no email listed with the State Board of Elections, there seems to be no way to contact him today other than in person.

    Now, I will try Poe…

  15. - Joe M - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 12:08 pm:

I think Madigan has a better handle on what the #1 issue in Illinois is. His opening statement at most of his press conferences is: “The #1 Issue Facing Illinois Is the Budget”

  16. - Grandson of Man - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 2:08 pm:

Rauner told union protesters that America was built on free enterprise and growth. America was also built on the backs of union members and union rights, the very people and things Rauner has been trying to weaken or eliminate in one way or another.

Rauner is still in campaign mode against Madigan.

    #anythin’butgovernin’

  17. - reasonable - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 2:18 pm:

you can email McCann at SenatorSam@frontier.com

  18. - Wordslinger - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 2:26 pm:

So the pay-to-play bust out king and Medicaid scammer disses Americans who actually working for living as not understanding free enterprise or how to grow the country.

It must be amazing to go grow through life with thaf combination of narcissism and lack of self-awareness.

  19. - Mouthy - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 2:30 pm:

    - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 9:00 am:

    Well said.

If the override doesn’t pass the first discretionary item I’d get rid of if I were an ASFCME member is my SJ-R subscription based solely on their beat the union editorial…

  20. - LINK - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 2:36 pm:

Thanks reasonable. I sent a email/letter to Poe and McCann

  21. - Mason born - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 2:37 pm:

It seems to me Rauner is pouring gas on a fire he tried to put out yesterday. I mean claimimg unions are un-american just reassures every one that you are committed to bargaining in good faith with these un-american people. Wait what?

  22. - Skeptic - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 3:21 pm:

Mason Born: Sounds like you’ve hit on the M. C. Escher Logic that is Bruce Rauner.

  23. - reasonable - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 4:13 pm:

when are they going to vote on SB1229?

  24. - ah AH - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 6:00 pm:

    debating now… yes will vote…

  25. - ah AH - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 6:07 pm:

    Now the hard part

  26. - Grandson of Man - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 6:10 pm:

SB 1229 clears the Senate and is on the way to the House. I watched the debate and the rantings of Sen. Murphy. Now the fun really begins, as the bill goes to the House.

  27. - Casual Observer - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 6:16 pm:

    Madigan: “checkmate”.

  28. - Stoic the Vast - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 6:24 pm:

    Is this an Up day?

  29. - Sue - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 6:24 pm:

The Union Arbitration bill on its face is a single purpose bill in total violation of the Illinois constitution. Hopefully someone is drafting the dec action awaiting the override vote in the House. Absent the Sp Ct willing to ignore its duty to uphold the constitution the AFCSME bill will be DOA in court.
