Today’s number: 601
Thursday, Sep 3, 2015 - Posted by Rich Miller * The previous record for comments on a single blog post here was 422, set on December 30, 2008. I was having a nice leisurely lunch in South Beach that day, and when I finished I decided to take a stroll along the water. And then after just a few short strides I suddenly realized that it wasn’t New Year’s Eve, when I figured I’d probably be safe from any major Rod Blagojevich announcements (he wasn’t trying to bury any news back then). It was only the 30th. Oops. So I sprinted back to my hotel, dashed up the stairs instead of waiting on the elevator, pulled my mobile phone out of the room safe and saw I had a ton of missed text messages and phone calls. Gov. Blagojevich was about to appoint Roland Burris to the US Senate. After blogging in my room for a while, I moved to a nearby bar and had them change the channel to CNN. They wouldn’t turn on the sound, though, so I missed some important things. And since I was sitting in a beach bar I had more than my share of cocktails, so the post is pretty much a rambling mess. I should’ve broken it up into several smaller posts, but I didn’t for whatever reasons. And now I cringe every time I look at that monster. * Anyway, I told you that story because y’all smashed the old record with your 601 comments on yesterday’s post about Rep. Dunkin’s absence. I thought about opening up a fresh thread late yesterday afternoon, but then I decided I’d wait and see if you broke the record so I wouldn’t have to look at that awful Burris post ever again. Thanks!!!

I actually tried to help get it to 500. How little did I know. That post of Burris should rightfully now be posted on the pre-made tombstone of his…if there’s any room. lol

Kinda fun to go back and re-read it, know that we know you were BUI.

I would have guessed blagos arrest was #1.

==so I wouldn’t have to look at that awful Burris post ever again==
What did I (and probably many others) do? Look at the awful story involving Burris and Blago. Guess anyone who follows Illinois politics is a glutton for punishment. Thanks Rich
- The Muse - Thursday, Sep 3, 15 @ 12:13 pm:
South Beach. Cocktails. Beach bar… You sir, are forgiven.

===I would have guessed blagos arrest was #1.===
I broke that up into several posts. Plus, we were knocked offline for two hours.
- @MisterJayEm - Thursday, Sep 3, 15 @ 12:19 pm:
Rich,
If you want to roll it back to a nice even 600, I’ve got a dad-gum double-post in there.

What’s the record for deletions? lol. From the comments, it looks like you might have hit 700 notwithstanding Doublemint twin MrJM! (kidding you JM)
- A Jack - Thursday, Sep 3, 15 @ 12:28 pm:
I thought one of the CCL or ten round clip posts broke a record also, but I can’t remember what it was. But perhaps old age is catching up with me and my memory. Although I will always be younger than Rich.
- Twisted Sister - Thursday, Sep 3, 15 @ 12:29 pm:
Rep. Dunkin: (a) a no-show performance on the Democratic Party’s most important vote in the last decade generates the most comments - ever - on Cap Fax AND (b) a member of the House’s very illustrious century club.
A rare breed of legislator indeed!
- foster brooks - Thursday, Sep 3, 15 @ 12:31 pm:
if and when afscme strikes the record will be broken

If contract negotiations come to an impasse you might want to beef up your servers and bandwidth. This site has become the go-to place for state employees and retirees.

===a member of the House’s very illustrious century club. ===
And he won it three times.
His name is only on the trophy twice because he won it two times in a row and didn’t give up the trophy to allow them to inscribe his name again.
He remembers it differently.
- OneMan - Thursday, Sep 3, 15 @ 12:43 pm:
First on that one BTW…

ah, memories. Tombstone guy and hair man now have fellow travelers on the strange train that is politics in our state.

I was sitting through one of my kids’s extracurricular activities and couldn’t believe the amount of comments that kept coming every time I refreshed my smartphone. And then I went to Facebook and was surprised that a lot of news site and legislator pages weren’t as inundated as I expected.
- Chicago Bars - Thursday, Sep 3, 15 @ 1:07 pm:
Is there an online list of the very illustrious House Century Club “winners”?
- Huh? - Thursday, Sep 3, 15 @ 1:13 pm:
I hope you got enough rest yesterday. You have to remember to take care of your self.
- Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 3, 15 @ 1:39 pm:
Rich,
Thanks for keeping the lights on, the place was hopping last night.
You have the best place to talk real time Illinois politics, and last night continues to reinforce that fact.
It reflects on you how incredibly special of a community you created.

“As they shouted “No! No! No!” while casting their votes, Rep. Kenneth Dunkin, a Chicago Democrat who sponsored the legislation, stuck his middle finger in the air and gestured it toward his colleagues”.

I almost couldn’t remember if the Century Club was 100 votes against a member’s bill…or the member missed 100 votes!
