Question of the day
Friday, Oct 16, 2015 - Posted by Rich Miller * I have a bunch of errands that I absolutely have to run this afternoon, so I’m gonna be gone for a bit. We’ve got a bunch of policy stuff on the blog today, so instead of a question, how about we talk baseball? And, by the way, I hate the Mets, but that still doesn’t mean I’m rooting for the Cubs.

LETS GO METS!!!
- OneMan - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 12:39 pm:
When I was a youth, the Mets were on the NY Superstation WOR? that we got as part of our cable package, so you could watch the Mets and adds for Carver’s Ice Cream and the seasonal cakes that were just the same shaped ice cream cake with different decorations.
- Chicago Cynic - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 12:40 pm:
CUBS in six if not sooner. They are really good.
- 47th Ward - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 12:41 pm:
Glad it’s the Mets. 7-0 against them this year. Four more to go.
- Politix - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 12:41 pm:
Welp, with Russell out I hope Javier’s bat stays hot. Of course, Russell’s fielding will be missed. Hope to see him in the WS…
- Aldyth - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 12:43 pm:
I daresay it will be easier to get the folks of Illinois to get behind the Cubs making it to the World Series than for the legislature and governor to agree on a budget.
- Anonin' - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 12:45 pm:
Hopin’ Cubbies don’t get nervous….worried BVR skippin’ the games….can’t believe you are runnin’ errands and skippin’ the big high speed rail presser
- lake county democrat - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 12:48 pm:
Pulling for the Mets (as a Sox fan) but have to credit Theo Epstein for an amazing job building this team on the cheap - nearly every decision a winner. One interesting thing about this series is that the Mets took the same rebuilding approach as the Cubs, except they focused on pitching rather than hitting. Kansas City is also the result of “mega rebuilding” (over 25 years). The only “traditional” built team still in the playoffs are the Blue Jays (who were my pick to win it going into the playoffs).
- Secret Square - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 12:49 pm:
I know I’m getting ahead of myself here, but the question has come up of which AL team would be better for the Cubs to face in the Series if they win the NLCS.
If you define “better” as “most competitive” the answer would have to be Toronto, but if you define “better” as “most fun for the fans” I’d pick Kansas City.
Consider that:
1) there are outposts of Cub Nation in far western IL and in IA that are closer to KC than to Chicago;
2) there are large numbers of IL college students attending schools in MO and IA within reasonable driving distance of KC;
3) disgruntled Cards fans whose hatred for the North Siders trumps any grudge they might have against Don Denkinger would likely root for the Royals, and you have a recipe for a Series potentially as intense as any Cubs-Cards contest.
Let’s just say that if I owned a sports bar in Des Moines, Columbia MO or Omaha right now, I would be praying really hard for a Cubs-Royals Series!

BTW TeamBungle promised another Superstar will be found to run the AG Dept — count the gate at the fairs.
BTW/2 Anyone ask how the count went in DuQuion?
- Politix - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 12:53 pm:
“skippin’ the big high speed rail presser”
No presser after all? Guess teh hi-speed rail idea was too far out even for him right now.
- FormerParatrooper - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 12:54 pm:
Cubs take Mets, advance to World Series. Meet KC Royals, first 3 games neither does well. Royals win in 5 games. My prediction.
- slow down - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 12:54 pm:
The fear we’re starting to see in the eyes of White Sox fans is entertaining.

Nice to hear this from a “Cynic”!
- Stones - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 12:56 pm:
Good young power pitchers versus good young power hitters. Stacks up to be a hell of a series.
I’m not a Cubs nor Mets fan but will be watching as a fan of the game of baseball.
- illini - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 12:58 pm:
I’ve already posted a few times earlier today on heavier topics but always enjoy these threads.
Congrats to the Cubs - they were better than my Cards when it mattered and I can remember years ago when the Cards and “Scum Pond” Mets were challenging each other ( and if anyone has one of those T-shirts, it is probably a collectors item ).
I respect your loyalties Rich, and I hope that to some extent it is reciprocal. All I hope is that these will be good series and that we have an opportunity to watch baseball at its best.
I’m saying, at this point “Go Cubs”

I predict a team with blue in their uniform will win it all.
- Not quite a majority - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 1:06 pm:
Back in ‘69 the Cubs had a great shot. Then a little expansion team took off — historically speaking (the Mets for you youngsters). I’m a diehard, lifelong Cardinal fan, but this series, I’m rooting for the Cubs. And if KC gets in on the American side, I’m double rooting for the Cubs!!
- VanillaMan - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 1:07 pm:
My father told me that it was the Mets’ fault the Cubs wiped out back in 1969. So - it is the Cub’s turn, right?
- Phil - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 1:17 pm:
@ One Man - Are you casting aspersions on Fudgie the Whale? BTW, you got the name wrong: it was Carvel’s, not Carver’s.

- LizPhairTax - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 1:27 pm:
Avenge 1969 and then avenge 1993 for the Sox if we get the Blue Jays.
- cards fan - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 1:29 pm:
From Red Bird to Blue Jays.
The Force seems to be with the Jays.
- Wordslinger - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 1:30 pm:
Nice to have the extra days to reset the rotation, Lester on long rest, Jake on five days.
- Responsa - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 1:36 pm:
I have to admit that I think deGrom is the bee’s knees.
In general, I think Mets pitching rotation including their closer is superior to Cubs– and I think Cubs young bats are superior to Mets. So who knows? I’ll root for the Cubs.
My initial post-season hope was for the Astros to end up as AL champs and Cubs to be NL champs, and then have Chicago Cubs take out the Astros to win the World Series as did another amazing Chicago baseball team back in 2005. I like symmetry and bookends. I would have loved to see a Cubs –Astros series.
- Not a Cubs fan but,... - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 1:36 pm:
Muts are set up for an epic failure…. 69 was a miracle and 86 only happened because they played the Red Sux
- cannon649 - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 1:38 pm:
Mets could not be more fitting.
I am a long time Cub fan but the Rickets management team has upset me regularly.
Good for the city - but
- Secret Square - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 1:40 pm:
Another reason a Cubs-Royals Series would be awesome: wagers involving deep dish pizza and barbecue
- logic not emotion - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 1:52 pm:
I’m a Cardinals fan firstmost; but I’ll be a Cubs fan until the start of the next regular season.

Now I have “Summer of ‘69″ in my head. Bad on two levels.
REVENGE!
- common_sense - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 1:55 pm:
The one game the Cardinals pitched well the cubs could not hit. Mets have better pitching than the Cardinals had in the playoffs. As Cardinal fan I hope the Mets destroy the cubs. I am a Cardinal fan and a fan of ANYONE who plays the cubs.

I’m reminded of the old (80s) ad that played on WGN with Mike Royko saying, “What’s a Met?”
GO CUBS GO!
- Juvenal - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 2:22 pm:
Wordslinger -
Nice to rest pitchers, true.
But you never want to rest hot bats, and the Cubs have six starters with OBP over .250
That said, Cubs are the Final Four favorite for a reason.
- hisgirlfriday - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 2:53 pm:
With the Mets as the opponent, we’ve got “Rookie of the Year” playing out along with “Back to the Future II”
- anon - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 3:08 pm:
Throw out those 7 wins earlier this season. Mets had players hurt and didn’t have Cespedes. Mets pitching staff is very good
Mets in 6
- Wensicia - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 3:20 pm:
The Cubs are the only positive in this state right now.

fear in the eyes of White Sox fans? you mean the glow that still exists from winning ten years ago!!! we did it!!!
- Buddy - Friday, Oct 16, 15 @ 4:36 pm:
My! My! My! How sad some Sox fans are. When the Sox went to the series in 2005 every Cubs fan that I knew was pulling for the Sox. It was exciting and nice to see all hoopla surrounding a world series happening in our backyard. Now the very same Sox fans that were so pleased when everybody was pulling for their Sox in 2005 are now the biggest cry babies on earth. Here’s to your inferiority complex.
