The governor and four legislative leaders will meet again Thursday at the Thompson Center in Chicago as they continue talks during the budget impasse. Two weeks ago, they met at the Capitol in Springfield, making public speeches beforehand. Last week, they met in Chicago behind closed doors.

A light lunch will be served, followed by a recitation of positions and some finger pointing. Following coffee, a promise to keep these negotiations moving forward. All will publicly say they’re encouraged by the talks.

Hot cocoa, popcorn, and a replay of “It’s a Wonderful Life”

  7. - Nope, Nope, Nope - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 11:19 am:

Radogno and Durkin will be completely silent whenever Rauner takes a drink of water. They haven’t gotten that trick down just yet.

  8. - Mama - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 11:20 am:

I would love to be a mouse in their closed door meetings.

  9. - Sir Reel - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 11:23 am:

At some point, these meetings have to get down to dollars and cents. New revenues, cuts, agency spending, etc. The pontificating and politicking won’t cut it. But not yet.

  10. - Just Me - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 11:24 am:

They’ll get together and take out their calendars and schedule another meeting.

  11. - Wensicia - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 11:24 am:

Rauner offers Madigan and Cullerton free membership in his wine club if they’ll agree to limit collective bargaining.

  12. - Mama - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 11:25 am:

There are smoke signals coming from those weekly closed meetings, and it smells like lay-offs are in the air again.

  13. - Dance Band on the Titanic - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 11:26 am:

They are sternly warned that if they don’t reach an agreement on the budget they will all be on Santa’s naughty list this year.

Governor, is it your understanding that your tic-tac-toe TaxHikeMike campaign is going to cause me to accede to your demands?

  16. - Dome Gnome - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 11:33 am:

I predict Rauner tries to auction off the Thompson Center to the highest bidder, and Madigan swipes at his nose at just the most inopportune moment. Sold!

  17. - Bogey Golfer - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 11:40 am:

They’ll exchange Holiday cards, wish each other Merry Christmas, Happy New Year’s and pick a date in January to meet again.

  18. - Linus - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 11:41 am:

    There will be no mistletoe.

  19. - Norseman - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 11:43 am:

Madigan comes out of the meeting and exclaims that Rauner has been Xmas shopping in the extreme. Rauner blames Madigan for allowing unions to try and unionize Santas. Durkin complains about 12 years of Dem controlled Christmas decorations at state buildings.

  20. - Formerly Known As... - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 11:48 am:

Madigan: We need to help Chicago.
    Rauner: Hand over the unions.

Rauner: I’ll see you next year.

    Ugly Christmas sweater contest?

  26. - Robert the Bruce - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 11:54 am:

The only adult in the room tries to get to consensus on a deal, while Madigan and Rauner talk past each other, and the R legislative leaders read from their script.

  27. - Mongo - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 12:26 pm:

They ought to invite Moody’s to the meeting. That’ll bring some reality to an unreal situation.

  28. - burbanite - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 12:27 pm:

RNUG beat me. But also, Madigan lets Cullerton do all the talking.

  29. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 12:29 pm:

    Alabama beats Michigan State.

    OK beats Clemson.

    Alabama beats OK.

wet, lots of snow, occasional bluster, hail and bitter cold in the room…

  32. - Formerly Known As... - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 12:50 pm:

Madigan tries his own ==OODA loop== by being talkative and bringing everyone apples.

  33. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 12:51 pm:

    - WhoKnew -

Turns out Durkin and Radogno both thought they had Rauner, so they had to redraw…

  34. - Ghost - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 12:52 pm:

Rauner enters meeting singing: “its the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine….”

  35. - Anon - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 1:07 pm:

All for show. Rauner doesn’t want a resolution. He wants chaos. He has said this over and over. He thinks chaos will create opportunity. The guy is destroying lives.

  36. - walker - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 1:14 pm:

If they are stuck, and want a laxative, how about following Garrett’s suggestion — go over the compromise proposed by a group of leslators point by point.

  37. - cdog - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 1:31 pm:

Madigan to Rauner, “Are done playing with matches? Ready for a fire extinguisher?”

    No headlines

  43. - DuPage Don - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 3:31 pm:

Meeting adjourned sine die ten minutes after it starts because they can’t hear each other from being drowned out by protesters at LaSalle and Randolph!

  44. - XDNR - Tuesday, Dec 15, 15 @ 6:50 pm:

Madigan and Cullerton open the meeting by singing a duet to “Your a Mean One Mr. Grinch”, followed by Durkin and Radogno countering by singing Handel’s “Messiah”, Rauner adjourns meeting and suggests meeting again next December to discuss the FY17 budget.

  45. - Sick of It All - Wednesday, Dec 16, 15 @ 12:25 am:

Guess none of them have kitchen duty for Xmas! They ain’t home cookin - would probably be more effective of an effort. At least they would be feeding people more than bull.
