    TRY NOT TO SUCK

    Let’s go Cubs!

  3. - Aldyth - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 7:12 am:

There’s a century’s worth of Cubs fans jockeying for the best seats at the Wrigley Field in the sky. My Dad, an assortment of uncles, and both grandfathers will be there.

  4. - Harvest76 - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 7:14 am:

This is our year! Go Cubs!!

  5. - the Cardinal - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 7:24 am:

Cubs in 6 …too bad they wont win it all at home that would make for some northside fun.

  6. - chief wahoo - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 7:45 am:

    tribe in 5

  7. - thunderspirit - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 7:47 am:

Well, we don’t have any control over what the players do…but we have lots of control over how jerk-ish we are. I strive to not be. Go Cubs!

  8. - chief wahoo - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 8:05 am:

    @ thunderspirit

    Hooray for you

  9. - New Slang - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 8:09 am:

Nothing like a backhanded well-wishing post from a rival. Haha! We’ll take it anyway we can get it.

  10. - Responsa - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 8:09 am:

Kudos Cubs. I’m happy for my Cub fan friends and business associates. This years’ team is filled with young talent and is fun to watch. SO FAR, without question, they have been the best, most complete baseball team in each post season series and have absolutely deserved to win.

The national and local media coverage however has gone from human interest, to too much, to over-kill, to vomit worthy. Enough is enough. You’re embarrassing yourselves, media.

  11. - Cubs - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 8:12 am:

Thanks Rich…that means a lot coming from such a devoted Sox fan. Go Chicago!

  12. - phocion - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 8:22 am:

Cubs sweep in 4! Go Cubs!!!

  13. - LizPhairTax - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 8:25 am:

Has anyone done a TV news story about a really old Cubs fan, like maybe someone who was at the World Series as a child in 1945 and remembers what it was like? You could go to where they live and interview them. Maybe put them in some Cubs clothes or something. Have them hold up a picture from 1945. That would be ratings gold!

You could even do some side-by-side comparison of what things cost in 1945 and 1908 vs. today. It’d be innovative and unprecedented groundbreaking TV.

This is going to be fun. A group of fans that has waited a long time is going to get a championship. I hope that it’s us.

Keep Belushi away. No talent hack. And Eddie Vedder, you’re inching in to Tom Dreesen territory.

  14. - Six Degrees of Separation - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 8:35 am:

Or in the now-famous words of their manager…try not to (banned word?)

  15. - Ron Burgundy - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 8:42 am:

I think it is a wonderful story. A long downtrodden franchise, generations of long suffering fans, and a tremendous team full of young players who play with heart and a lot of talent. How can you not love this story?

I’m talking of course about the Cleveland Indians. :)

  16. - Give Me A Break - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 8:47 am:

Well this Cardinal fan has to admit it’s fun watching my Cub fan friends get to enjoy something none of them ever have.

And this Cub roster scares me to death given the roster’s age and depth. If injuries and free agency don’t hit the Cubs they are built for a really long run of success.

  17. - Tommydanger - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 8:48 am:

I see the 10 day forecast calls for record breaking lows in hell.

As a Sox fan, I hope you get to experience what we did in ‘05.

    Good luck!

  18. - BBG Watch - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 8:48 am:

I have the Cubs in 6. Wish my parents could have seen this.

  19. - RNUG - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 8:51 am:

Hoping this is their year. If nothing else, the series will.disyract us from politics for a bit.

  20. - RNUG - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 8:53 am:

== If injuries and free agency don’t hit the Cubs they are built for a really long run of success. ==

It’s the free agency that worries me long term. Right now a number of the key veterans only have 1 year contracts

  21. - Anon221 - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 8:58 am:

Go Cubbies!!! The bleacher bums in the sky box above are cheering for ya!

  22. - Amalia - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 8:58 am:

please get it done so we can stop the myth madness.

  23. - Amalia - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 8:59 am:

oh, and do something nice for Bartman. it was never his fault.

  24. - Piece of Work - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 9:01 am:

Cubs have to be strong favorites, the Cleveland pitching staff is in shambles.

  25. - Cleveland Fan - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 9:06 am:

Ian Hunter said it best: Cleveland Rocks!

  26. - 47th Ward - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 9:15 am:

Against ANY other team, Cleveland is the sentimental favorite. LOL. That is so Cleveland.

I might just listen to the game on the radio, like the last time the Cubs played in a WS. Well, I’ll probably have the radio on but still watch the TV broadcast. I can’t stand listening to Joe Buck.

    Go Cubs.

  27. - Piece of Work - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 9:21 am:

In another post, someone pointed out that Stan Musial was in the Navy in 1945 and the Cardinals finished 3 games behind the Cubs. Thank the military for the Cubs being in the World Series in 1945 because Stan would have easily made the difference in more than 3 games.

  28. - up2now - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 9:21 am:

I’m a Cardinals fan, but congratulations to the Cubs and their fans, and hope they beat Cleveland.

  29. - Way Way Down Here - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 9:22 am:

I was walking up Clark Street toward Wrigley Saturday night and some dude yelled from a second story window, “Hey boy, go buy me a Christmas goose!” Got a good laugh from the crowd.

  30. - Flye - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 9:25 am:

I hope they win so I don’t have to listen to their fans whine for another hundred years.

  31. - Six Degrees of Separation - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 9:27 am:

When he steps to the plate in Game 1, Dexter Fowler will be the first black Cub to play in a WS.

  32. - 47th Ward - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 9:33 am:

It’ll also be the first time a Cubs player has appeared on television in a world series.

  33. - LizPhairTax - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 9:35 am:

Or played at night. On a full stomach. After riding an aeroplane. We can go all day.

  34. - It's All Relative - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 9:37 am:

    @Piece of Work:

It is undeniable that the war affected pennant races. Musial was in the Navy for one year (1945). That being said, I have never heard anyone discount the Cardinals winning pennants in 1942, 1943 and 1944 or World Series titles in 1942 and 1944 when Stan Musial was in a Cardinal uniform and other MLB players were in the military. The Dodgers were the National League team that was probably most adversely affected by the war.

  35. - x ace - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 10:04 am:

Hopefully , Capitolfax will scoop with quote from the ” Emil Verban Society “.

  36. - Big Muddy - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 10:05 am:

GO CUBS!! …and good luck with former Cub Rick Renteria sox fans.

  37. - @MisterJayEm - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 10:08 am:

It’s 2016 — I’m going to take some vicarious happiness wherever I can get it.

    Go Cubs!

    – MrJM

  38. - Grandson of Man - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 10:09 am:

Masterful pitching performance by Hendricks. We wanted Rizzo to get a run after he was stranded on 3rd base once or twice. The Rizzo homer was so much fun.

    This is pretty darn exciting.

  39. - WhoKnew - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 10:13 am:

    Let the “W” flags fly!

  40. - Anonymous - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 10:17 am:

My mother-in-law passed away six years ago at the age of 93, being a huge Cubs fan, never got to see a WS win. Hoping this is our year! Pitching might just be our advantage

  41. - Montrose - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 10:19 am:

Few things can bridge the partisan divide like sports. It’s nice to have something to feel all warm and fuzzy about. Go Cubs, Go!

  42. - Huh? - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 10:20 am:

Was listening to the radio the other day when a story came on about “choking” in the big game. The definition of choking is not playing up to your full potential caused by over thinking.

The story went on to suggest that the best way to make your golf partner blow the next shot is to ask “What did you do with your right elbow on that last shot?” They will shank the shot because they are concentrated the elbow instead of the rest of the swing mechanics.

So Cubbies - no tweaking the pitchers or batters. Don’t over think what you are doing. Relax and play the game like you have been doing all year long.

  43. - Wensicia - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 10:33 am:

To Santo and Banks, wish you were here.

    GO CUBS!!!

  44. - A guy - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 10:48 am:

Congratulations to the Cubs. They earned every bit of this.

Rich, you were worried about disorder?? The first impulse of these fans was to break down emotionally in a sense of disbelief. If (When!) they win the WS, just watch….Kleenex, Puffs, and every other tissue brand (especially scented) will go through the roof.

They are a team of really good dudes who are fun to cheer for. This Sox fan is very happy for them.

  45. - Rod - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 10:52 am:

I am just thrilled the Cubs won the National League title. If my father, and grandfather buried at Wunder’s Cemetery (located at 3963 North Clark Street down the street from Wrigley Field)were still alive they would be thrilled too.

If the Cubs were to win the World Series I would be on a different planet. If they were to lose, I hate to admit it, I would not be devastated because I see this team advancing for years to come. I am honestly totally unstressed about the Cubs being in the World Series.

  46. - Stones - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 11:08 am:

The Cubs need to finish it in 6. Because of that dumb Bud Selig declaration at the All Star game the AL has home field advantage this year.

  47. - Carhartt Representative - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 11:17 am:

=They are a team of really good dudes who are fun to cheer for.=

I like Rizzo a lot. I think Ross and Fowler are good guys. I am so glad that the White Sox didn’t trade for Chapman. The guy is a former government informant for Castro, a deadbeat dad, and a domestic abuser.

  48. - Jose Abreu's next homer - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 11:21 am:

Cubs rescind offer of tickets to Aldermen.

  49. - Sam Weinberg - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 11:31 am:

    Extraordinary curses end extraordinarily.

Sorry, Cubs fans, I’m talking about Cleveland. And nothing would be more extraordinary than the Tribe being the second Cleveland team in the last 4 months to pull out an against-all-odds world championship to a media-darling juggernaut.

(That’s my heart talking. My head says Cubs in 5).

    Go Tribe.

  50. - NoGifts - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 11:33 am:

They haven’t won a world series since 1908. WHY DOES NOBODY MENTION THAT THEY WON IT TWO YEARS IN A ROW?? 1907 & 1908?

  51. - Stooges - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 11:34 am:

We Cardinals fans are upset that our team missed the playoffs and we haven’t won the World Series in five years. Cubs fans felt the same way in 1913.

As a life-long Illinoisian but Cardinals fan, I am happy for all my Cubs fan friends and relatives, and the city of Chicago. This Cubs team is impressive and I think they’ll find a way to win this in 6 games.

  52. - wordslinger - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 11:36 am:

Taking seven out of 10 from the Dodgers and Giants in October was a heavy lift. Winning three straight after getting shutout twice in a row was amazing.

The kids don’t know they’re supposed to choke. In the end, I think Cubs starters beat the Tribe’s bullpen.

  53. - Anonymous - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 11:54 am:

Cubs - Try not to suck.

  54. - Slippin' Jimmy - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 12:09 pm:

Told my Cub friend in April it was going to be a long season for this lifelong Cardinal fan but if Cards were out of I’d certainly pull for the Cubs. So I will and permit me to say the Cubbies are really fun to watch as they are very good. Unfortunately though, it’ll be awhile before they have 11 WS rings. Good luck Cubbies!

  55. - wordslinger - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 12:51 pm:

–Unfortunately though, it’ll be awhile before they have 11 WS rings.–

Hard to believe, but the Cubs have now won 17 NL pennants, to the Cards 19.

Six of the Cubs pennants were before 1900.

  56. - Slippin' Jimmy - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 12:55 pm:

Touché word- WS I was making reference to. LOL

  57. - Cubs in '16 - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 1:10 pm:

In my 40 years of following the Cubs this is the first time I sense a true culture change within the organization. Instead of inventing ways to fail they’re finding ways to win. And they’re going to win for a long time to come.

Rizzo, Baez, Russell, and Bryant could go down as the best infield in baseball history. Provided they stay healthy they all have a realistic shot at becoming HOFers.

When the Cubs win the WS Theo will instantly punch his ticket into the HOF and will be considered among the best, if not THE best, baseball executive in the history of the game.

  58. - Madigan's Lapdog - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 1:53 pm:

As I’m rejoicing at winning the pennant and excited about our Cub’s chances in the WS, my mind just wandered out to Colorado….wondering if they let Blago watch the games or listen on the radio.

  59. - VanillaMan - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 2:22 pm:

I’m still not feeling all that confident about this.

  60. - Amalia - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 2:27 pm:

October 14, 1906 That is all.

  61. - wordslinger - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 2:39 pm:

Amalia, that’s very funny, in a Bitter Sox Fan sort of way.

    Here’s the box score.

    http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHA/CHA190610140.shtml

  62. - Cubs in '16 - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 2:44 pm:

No need to provide the box score for Amalia Word. She kept a scorecard at the game.

  63. - Amalia - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 2:45 pm:

thank you, Wordslinger! it does not run off my lips as easily as October 26, 2005, but 1906 was a very interesting baseball year!

  64. - Amalia - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 2:47 pm:

@Cubs in ‘16, just proving once again that Sox fans know baseball.

  65. - 1906 City Series - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 3:20 pm:

According to some sources, the “ground rule double” in the first inning which scored a White Sox run was the result of someone in the standing room crowd tackling the Cubs outfielder Schulte who was trying to field the fly ball. Moises Alou had nothing to complain about in comparison.

Schulte was the first Cubs player to be chosen as an MVP (Chalmer’s Award) in 1911.

  66. - Amalia - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 4:04 pm:

Tinker to Evers to (no) Chance that year!

  67. - 1906 City Series - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 4:10 pm:

The 1906 World Series was odd in that teams played the first two games in snow flurries. These games were played during the second week of October during daylight.

  68. - Judgment Day - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 4:35 pm:

“== If injuries and free agency don’t hit the Cubs they are built for a really long run of success. ==

It’s the free agency that worries me long term. Right now a number of the key veterans only have 1 year contracts”
    ————–

Don’t sweat it too much. First off, the Cubs still look to have Top 6-10 level talent in their minor league system. There’s a LOT of very impressive pitching at the Eugene (Short Season) / South Bend (Low A) levels this last year, and some additional strong talent at Triple AAA & Double AA.

Talent pipeline is already well on the way to the big club. The Theo, Jeb (Hoyer), & Jeb (McCloud) show is just starting to hit their stride.

    “Cubs Win”.

  69. - RNUG - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 5:38 pm:

== Thank the military for the Cubs being in the World Series in 1945 because Stan would have easily made the difference in more than 3 games. ==

All the teams had players off at war. That’s why there is an asterisk on the 1945 win.

  70. - cannon649 - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 8:18 pm:

I have been a fan and neighbor for 50 plus years. Needless to say I do not like any of the office management or the “new” Wrigley.

The team has produced and Joe was great.

    4 more wins - please.

  71. - Soccertease - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 8:35 pm:

Go Indians! Cards fan, but will be happy for Cub friends/family if the Cubs win the series. I’ve never seen so many Cubs lids lately in my life,

  72. - RNUG - Monday, Oct 24, 16 @ 10:01 pm:

== I’ve never seen so many Cubs lids lately in my life, ==

Some of us are just digging out 50 some years of ball caps. My son found a red, white and blue one tonight in my box of “extra” ball caps in the garage. In my case, if I bought it or wore it at a game, the date and score is scribbled inside it.
