Oberweis makes horrible analogy

Tuesday, Mar 14, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* From the Windy City Times

In a March 8 hearing on the Illinois Fighting Wage Theft Act in the Illinois State Senate Labor Committee, State Sen. Jim Oberweis ( R-Sugar Grove ) implied that both “wife beating” and wage theft were ultimately results of “differences of opinion.”

After hearing details of the bill, Oberweis asked a witness, workers’ rights advocate Don Chartier, whether he’d ever beaten his wife or any other woman, to which Chartier answered, “No.”

Oberweis then asked Chartier if he’d ever had a disagreement with a woman, to which Chartier answered, “Yes.” At that point, Oberweis made the point that both wife-beating and wage-theft accusations boiled down to differences of opinion and “he said, she said” scenarios.

In a statement released by HourVoice, an organization pushing for the passage of the wage theft law, Chartier said, “I was absolutely shocked to hear the crime of wage theft and the crime of domestic violence both compared to ‘differences of opinion’ and minimized by Senator Oberweis, particularly in a State Senate hearing on International Women’s Day. His comments have certainly strengthened my resolve to work hard to fight both of these crimes.”

The Illinois Fighting Wage Theft Act was passed by the committee.

I can safely safe I won’t be applying for a job at Oberweis’ company.

  2. - Chicago_Downstater - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 12:40 pm:

I don’t know what is worse. The fact that Oberweis said that or that I’m not at all surprised that he said that.

Then again I’ve only heard stories about him from folks that have tried to pass things he was opposed to, so maybe that was unfair of me.

  3. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 12:42 pm:

Sen. Oberweis, have you ever been struck in the head with a blunt instrument, hard?

    Just say “yes.” Trust me.

  4. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 12:44 pm:

You can always count on Sen. Oberweis to refuse to see the inherit dangers of making an analogy that does not reflect the desired result of interpretation.

Trivializing domestic violence as an interpreted action clearly shows that Jim Oberweis sees serious social issues as just trivial things that others should see as he does… interpreted through the dollars and cents of a state Senator lacking compassion for human experiences.

Sen. Oberweis has, again and again, embarrassed himself and the Republican Party by merely never understanding his fellow human beings.

  5. - GraduatedCollegeStudent - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 12:49 pm:

Congratulations to Oberweis on positioning himself for a primary challenge to Shimkus.

  6. - Deft Wing - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 12:55 pm:

    Oh my. That’s bad.

Modern consumers may wish to think twice before their next purchase of dairy products.

  8. - Biscuit Head - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 12:56 pm:

    Is he married? Have daughters?
    Seriously.
With no sense of awareness or filter how did this guy get this far in life?

  9. - Rogue Roni - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 12:59 pm:

What’s up GOP? You either don’t say anything of substance or Go off script you say something horribly inappropriate.

  10. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 1:03 pm:

    - Rogue Roni -

Do not lump a whole Party with the Slytherin Jim Oberweis.

Jim Oberweis rarely speaks for the GOP and it can be argued he even rarely speaks for a majority of the GOP.

I can think of a Democrat or two a blanket statement like that would be grossly unfair to Democrats too.

    Thank you.

  11. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 1:10 pm:

Senator, do you have any other analogies more suitable for political discourse? Your last one is melting snowflakes faster than Global Warming.

  12. - Rogue Roni - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 1:10 pm:

I’m lumping the party to their two standard bearers, Trump and Rauner. Until I hear something from the peanut gallery they are complict.

  13. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 1:14 pm:

Senator, have you ever made a rotted monkey brain ice cream flavor? Your analogy is actually more disgusting than that.

  14. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 1:15 pm:

===Until I hear something from the peanut gallery they are complict.===

While that may or may not have merit to you…

… it’s grossly unfair to lump Republicans wholesale to someone like Oberweis.

Lemme guess, you’re waiting by your email for 70 odd emails?

Your high horse here seems more like a hobby horse.

  15. - MissingG - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 1:22 pm:

===Do not lump a whole Party with the Slytherin Jim Oberweis.===

Oswego Willy, not all Slytherins are evil. Remember Severus Snape? Talk about making generalizations…

  16. - A guy - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 1:27 pm:

Hard to imagine you can accomplish what he has and still have so awkward a style and sense that something like this can tumble out of your mouth. Eek.

  17. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 1:31 pm:

Severus Snape was a hero by first being a spy within Slytherin and in that role foiling the plans of Death Eaters and followers of Voldemort by, you guessed it, not following the strict Slytherin beliefs and requirements.

    (Pauses… thinks… pauses again)

    … or so I was told or… whatever…

  18. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 1:32 pm:

“I’m opposed to violence, except for senators asking me questions like that.”

  19. - Dome Gnome - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 1:40 pm:

Oberweis is my senator (with a lowercase “s”). I’m not proud of my state senator, my governor, or my president. That doesn’t leave me with much, does it?

  20. - MissingG - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 1:53 pm:

    Oswego Willy,
Slytherins get a bad rap just because that’s where the most visible racists are. *Tries to think of a political analogy that won’t get this post deleted*…

  21. - Annonin' - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 2:05 pm:

Certainly Obie can be lumped in with the pig/bigot in the white house.

  22. - Walter Concrete - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 2:05 pm:

How does Oberweis breathe when his foot seems to be constantly stuck firmly in his mouth?

Oswego Willy, do you live here or what?

  23. - Stumpy's bunker - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 2:06 pm:

Bellicose, quick to anger. Ask downstate GOP chairmen about being thumped on their chest with his finger to extract support during the 2006 GOP gubernatorial primary. He came too close for comfort to winning that nomination. And he eventually had to “settle” for a lowly state senator spot.

I’ve about decided that how you conduct yourself once blessed with a fortune is one of the real tests of character.

  24. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 2:13 pm:

    - MissingG -

(Trying to hide all shreds of HP around)

Salazar Slytherin was not “fond” of mudbloods. It was that belief that finally had him leave Hogwarts. Purity for Magic Folk.

    … again, that’s only what I hear or something…

    - Annonin’ -, linking Oberweis to Trump seems a simple enough helicopter ride away, but that’s between those two, not a whole Party that still has quite a few uncomfortable with Trump on many levels.

  25. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 2:18 pm:

He will just hand out some free ice cream and everything will be fine.

  26. - Skirmisher - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 2:20 pm:

I would be very relieved to see some evidence of intelligent thought by Mr. Oberweis, but I dispair of seeing it.

  27. - MissingG - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 2:21 pm:

    Good point OW,
Slytherin knew that you couldn’t restore the magical civilization with somebody else’s babies. But I’m still struggling to find a political analogy…

  28. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 2:41 pm:

    - MissingG -

Your analogy might be lost with those “Gs”… and Oberweis’ sense of… well, any sense.

    You keep lookin’ - OW

Jim Oberweis makes a wildly inappropriate analogy when debating something he doesn’t like.

In other news, water is wet. #sameasiteverwas

  31. - train111 - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 2:54 pm:

    Dear Sen Oberweiss

Could you please make your full time residence Florida? Your wife is already there and you already spend half your time there. It would spare you alot of foot in mouth disease and spare us from having to hear your nonsense.

PS Please don’t start tweeting your opinions every night. One of those is way more than enough.

Does anyone know: Was Oberweis a “yes” vote on the Grand Bargain?

Does he know a lot about both?

  36. - Michelle Flaherty - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 4:58 pm:

Is he still Rauner’s Senate floor leader?

  37. - cranky b - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 8:32 pm:

Sen Oberweight - you must have hit your first wife with that difference of opinion crap, thats the reason she owns the dairy.

  38. - TaxesBuyCivilization - Tuesday, Mar 14, 17 @ 11:52 pm:

Guess we can safely rely on the suspicion that he’s committed wage theft consistently.

  39. - Jerry - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 7:57 am:

It just shows how out of touch with reality Sen. O is. He thinks because he writes the occasional check to Mutual Ground that he understands DV. Obviously that is NOT the case.
