Rauner honors tireless volunteer

* NBC 5…
Howard Goldstein spent Thursday doing what he always does—volunteering with the Red Cross, serving food to his fellow veterans.
Little did he know, that Bruce Rauner, the governor of Illinois was waiting in the wings.
Striding toward the assembled volunteers in the food pantry at Hines V.A. Hospital, Rauner greeted each one. Then he called Goldstein forward, brought out a large proclamation, and revealed that he had declared Thursday, Howard Goldstein day in Illinois.
“Week in and week out for years and years, he’s helped volunteer with the Red Cross,” said Rauner. “He’s helped volunteer to help veterans, he’s helped so many organizations, here in Illinois and all walks of life. Howard’s an inspiration for all of us.”
Goldstein seemed genuinely shocked by the honor, pausing to thank the governor before escorting more veterans through the food line.
“I believe in giving back to the community so you just volunteer and do what you can,” he said. “I try to keep myself busy and stay out of trouble.”

Bruce Rauner: doing his best to ensure that nice people like Howard Goldstein never run out of volunteer opportunities to help the poor and least fortunate.
“We can use all the volunteers we can get,” said Rauner. “Lord knows we no longer pay people to do this (stuff). Not without term limits anyway.”

Here’s to all the Howard Goldsteins of the world. No one, including Rauner, can add or detract from their selfless service.
If Rauner truly wants to honor Goldstein, he can stop wrecking the social service provider infrastructure,
But I’m guessing he just wanted the free Uncle Fuzzy pop that NBC willingly provided — without questioning him on the great harm he’s inflicting on Illinois’ most vulnerable citizens.

One man truly helping others in need.
Another man makin’ proclamations and stagin’ news events about helpin’ others in need.

“We’ve determined Howard has volunteered so much, he has allowed us to lay off 4 more AFSCME employees”

Congratulations Howard for being recognized for the unheralded work you have been doing.
Perhaps the next person our Governor will recognize is Keana Williams for being a dedicated state employee. I feel fairly certain that instead of being honored for a day in Illinois she would settle for a guarantee that her sons life saving medical equipment will never again be removed because state vendors have not been paid for for over 2 years.

Hoorah for Howard Goldstein. Good job to the Rauner staffer who found him and set up this official thank you. Good for Rauner to laud a veteran and volunteer.

Ironically, Bruce Rauner is the reason for even more of a need from the Red Cross.
