In advance of today’s Women’s March in Springfield, Personal PAC posted a video skewering Gov. Bruce Rauner on abortion. It had 3,000 views in three hours. In it, Rauner’s voice is heard from a 2014 debate in which he says abortion is an issue between a woman and her doctor. As he’s talking, the video shows state Rep. Sara Feigenholtz, HB40 chief sponsor, walking into a store. It continues, music building up. It cuts to Diana Rauner from those 2014 TV ads saying “Bruce doesn’t have a social agenda” and turning to Rauner’s latest spot referring to “duct tape solutions.” What’s Feigenholtz buying at the store? Duct tape. Enter state Rep. Kelly Cassidy: “We’re taking duct tape to Springfield to help Bruce Rauner stick to his promises to defend women’s health.” The video ends by slapping duct tape across Rauner’s mouth.
Um, remember when Comptroller Mendoza held a press conference to slam WGN Radio host Steve Cochran for joking with Gov. Rauner on-air about taping her mouth shut with duct tape?
Yeah. In that light, maybe it wasn’t the best image to use. Watch the video…
*** UPDATE 1 *** I just spoke with Terry Cosgrove, who said the duct tape image “was intentional.”
“This was intentional to highlight what was said about Susana Mendoza and the duct tape. And this veto of HB 40 is an extension of that sexism,” he said.
“He’s being sensitive about duct tape? Please!”
*** UPDATE 2 *** A formal written response from Cosgrove…
Gov. Rauner keeps saying he wants real solutions to real problems and not duct tape solutions. The ad points out he is using duct tape to cover up his lies about abandoning his support for HB 40. Governor Rauner should use the duct tape to stop telling lies to voters.
[ *** End Of Updates *** ]
* The governor’s people put out their own video highlighting his commitment to women. It begins with his former comptroller, Leslie Munger…
A Democratic lawmaker pushing legislation to remove prohibitions on publicly funded abortions in Illinois hopes to call it for a vote as thousands of women converge on Springfield to lobby for a “progressive agenda.” […]
A vote Tuesday would coincide with the Illinois Women March on Springfield. It’s patterned on worldwide women’s marches Jan. 21. It will include a rally for measures including Feigenholtz’s bill and the long-stalled ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.
The event will include a noon rally at the Lincoln statue on the east side of the Statehouse grounds, and a rally in the Statehouse rotunda at 2:30. Lobbying and a march around the Capitol complex comes between those events.
To make way for the marchers, Second Street will be closed between Monroe and Jackson streets, and Capitol Avenue will be closed from Second to Third streets, city public works officials said. The closures begin at 10 a.m. and last until 1:30 p.m.
A full list of speakers and event details are here. There won’t be a public live video feed, but you can follow the march by monitoring our live coverage post.
Terry Cosgrove could not resist interjecting himself into the video. Apart from his livelihood, how do women’s reproductive/abortion rights concern him exactly?
I dunno if the continual referencing to the Duct Tape is the best way to pivot Rauner.
It shows a lack of turning the message.
The lazy way to rebuff a message is trying to have it backfire… especially when it’s backfired on the initial “inserter”.

“Bruce Rauner fails”

Never be too cute “by half”
You have Rauner’s own questionnaire and the flip flop there, and you have Diana Rauner “misleading” women, in the prism of where Bruce stands now.
That’s solid. No need to be too cute when simplicity hits the sweet spot.
John Rawlss — we all end up paying for things we disagree with. For example, I pay for corporate incentives to companies making millions in profit, right here in Illinois. I pay for payments to victims who experienced abuse by police (I object to the reason for payment here, not the payment itself!), etc. etc. That’s what happens when we are in a democracy. And it just so happens that access to abortion is a part of comprehensive healthcare for women, who should not be forced to bear children against their will. Grow up.
From a public relations standpoint, the political action committee could have selected a better messenger than Cosgrove.

I can gurantee if all of Illinois residents saw this over 99% wont even know who he is in the video.

Men can, and should, be concerned that women have access to comprehensive health care, that includes reproductive health. Meh - try again.
To Terry being in the video. Don’t know who he is. So him being there didn’t take away from the message for me.
The video was actually pretty good. I particularly liked the first Lady’s clip. Don’t know how I feel about the “ounce of deception” buttons being sold.
===Don’t know how I feel about the “ounce of deception” buttons being sold.===
That’s who Bruce and Diana are now.
The play on The Ounce, still having Diana as President, praising the Pritzkers while Diana funding messages disparaging JB Pritzker… while President of Ounce of Prevention…
… Diana Rauner, herself, said suing her husband was a “business decision”, dismissing the damage Bruce is causing Social Services.
The Ounce wants Diana as their President, then sometimes… You get the negative of Diana and Bruce Rauner too.
The buttons are “fine”.
The fact that there’s no explanation needed for the message… that speaks volumes.
I get Willy’s point about too cute by half but personally I love this. Having Sara walk into a hardware store to buy duct tape is really quite awesome. And while I would prefer only women in this video, Terry is inoffensive here. So yea, if this is one and done, it’s great. Mocking was due. Mocking was delivered. I’m ok if women (not men. Men please don’t do it) bring duct tape on stage today.
But then get back to the main point which is Rauner lied. That’s the key. Rauner promised to support this and is instead caving to extremists in his party on this issue.
Since nobody expects him to have a real primary, I’m wondering WHY? Serious question - is his caving on this so he doesn’t have to fund everything in the party and his re-elect himself? Is this a Uihlein priority?
This back and forth cutesy duct tape business is too inside baseball to be effective for general public policy messaging. But whatevs. Just reinforces to voters that there are no serious adults in Illinois politics.
FWIW, this is a You Tube video posted on Personal PAC’s social media. You have to visit Personal PAC’s site to see it. This isn’t intended for a general audience.
Given the intended audience, however, this is really well done. And I really want one of those buttons.
“It would be more accurate to call it a taxpayer funded abortion on demand march.”
Truly unbelievable. This march is also about equal pay, gender equality and organizing women to run for office and VOTE. This is not a single issues march. But…if it makes you more comfortable in hating it, you can make it all about abortion.
Terry needs to be careful - he seems to have a very personal grudge against Diana Rauner - you could tell from the press conference - I’m afraid he might go too far attacking her when he needs to stick to Bruce.
It is a little odd to see Cosgrove in there. Were there only two women from the GA willing to be in there?
I’m biased on this one because I definitely have an alternative view. Trying to be objective, the video darts around a bit too much to get much of a consistent thread. Diana may have the most cogent part of this video and people could leave with a different idea than the objective of the video. If they were going for angry…they accomplished that. I’m kinda with Willy on this one that it’s likely too clever by half.
The Cosgrove vignette doesn’t help this at all. Except to the most inside of insiders. He’s whiny as ever on top of that.

Gubernatorial candidate Pawar is scheduled to speak at today’s event. His social media site mentions labor rights. Women state employees in bargaining unit positions earn the same as men, thanks to the contract and labor rights. That’s important and powerful.
Per a study, women in unions earn more than those not in unions in every state. African-American and Hispanic women earn significantly more than their non-union counterparts. Rauner pays lip service to improving minorities’ economic prospects in state government, but he’s fighting a trench war to push down everyone’s standard of living.
Soccermom has been busy with work lately, so may have fallen behind. But didn’t men once have something to do with pregnancy? And aren’t people allowed to have strong political opinions on topics that may never affect them personally? I’m not quite sure why it’s troubling when men stand up for abortion rights, and I think Terry Cosgrove is one of the most canny and effective advocates there is.
More than just a yawner. Seven women, one man- all just talking heads. No identifications as to who they are. No identifications as to what agency they represent. Sound bites for Rauner??? Pretty worthless. Might be Rauner’s opinion of them as well. Would he miss them if they were gone???
After much contemplation, I guess I will resign myself to the fact that I have no control over where my tax dollars are spent.
Between publicly funded abortions, subsidizing Chicago’s and Cook Co’s harboring/educating/feeding/medicating of illegals, I don’t know if I can be shocked anymore by the lack of sane public policy.
Cdog, I am spending a lot of time (and money) studying public policy, and I’m not sure why it would be insane to provide education and healthcare to children whose parents brought them to this country without legal documentation. (I assume that’s what you mean by “illegals,” unless you’re talking about people who have broken the law and are imprisoned? Are you saying we should shut down and empty all prisons? That’s pretty radical, my friend.)

Illinois women up in arms!
Yet, not a single woman has announced for Governor on the Democratic ticket. Maybe they just plan on leaving it up to the (mostly) rich white guys running…….
Mrs. blue dog, and a pack of blue hairs(yikes), are teaming up today and doing a 24 hr pray in against abortion. I would hate to be Phelps or Costello on HB40..no win situation.
Soccermom, I appreciate your efforts in public policy. Please understand I am completely in favor of controlled immigration.
I do take offense, however, to the lack of respect for the rule of law. There should be pressure put on Congress to have comprehensive immigration reforms that includes tracking tourist visas, employer consequences, etc. (I believe Dreamers are for the most part currently in a safe status)
In the meantime, we aren’t doing a good job of taking care of our own citizens. Why should it be appropriate to block removal of, and thus harbor people, that have not “gotten in line” to enter this country legally. There are 1000’s waiting in line for years. I hope that DOJ and the entire Trump Administration makes it very rough to continue this promotion of lawlessness.
These kind of “swarm” actions and behaviors where a system is overwhelmed by intentionally disregarding the rule of law are disturbing.
It’s reminiscent of the Wild West, ride in to town with a gang and take what you want.
I have a friend that used to be a rape counselor until the State of Illinois made the choice to not afford that for its residents.
I am not talking about pregnancy from acts of violence. For goodness sake.
(I was actually adopted as an infant in 1962, through Lutheran Soc Svc. Who knows though, maybe my life was from a rape. I don’t know and it hasn’t been an issue. But I can say that I’m glad I was born and have been part of a wonderful family of 4 kids, all adopted as infants in the 1960’s. Just sayin’; everybody’s got a story, ya?)
A joke about placing duct tape over the mouth of a politician is unacceptable speech and the language of a rape culture. Actually placing duct tape over the mouth of a politician in a web ad is a sharp way to get your point across.
These divergent points of view are brought you by Illinois Democrats, who less than a month ago were apoplectic about an effort at a bad joke by Chicago radio host Steve Cochran. While Governor Bruce Rauner was on the phone line as a guest on his show, Cochran referenced a Rauner ad featuring duct tape as a metaphor for short-term fixes in Springfield.
Has anyone considered this: Medicaid/medical assistance is not just about who is eligible, or what services are covered; it also requires providers to meet certain criteria and to formally enroll in the Medical Assistance program. Should this bill pass as is, those are issues that HFS would ultimately have to hash out in rule, since the bill as currently written doesn’t go into details.
Given that abortion providers have historically been very, very lightly regulated (because pro-choicers fight even the most rudimentary regulations tooth and nail), what qualifications, if any, will providers be expected to meet? Will they have to be licensed physicians or could they just be advanced practice nurses or physician assistants? Will their facilities have to meet any particular standards (abortion facilities are exempt from many of the standards DPH imposes on outpatient clinics and other facilities)? What kind of oversight will be required to insure that fraudulent claims are not made?
Also bear in mind that since elective abortion coverage would NOT be part of the federal Medicaid program, it would not receive ANY federal match — the State would bear 100% of the cost — and the State AFAIK would be free to set looser eligibility criteria than currently exist for federal Medicaid (i.e. a higher income eligibility limit).
When a field that has enjoyed relative freedom from any oversight or regulation suddenly gets hooked up to a spigot of state funds, ask yourself: what could possibly go wrong?

More than just a yawner. Seven women, one man- all just talking heads. No identifications as to who they are. No identifications as to what agency they represent. Sound bites for Rauner??? Pretty worthless. Might be Rauner’s opinion of them as well. Would he miss them if they were gone???

“women, who should not be forced to bear children against their will”
I do believe that contraception and abstinence can be very effective in preventing pregnancy so that no one has to bear children against their will.
(Maybe the schools don’t cover that basic scientific fact anymore, due to a social agenda by the curriculum decision makers…? Who knows?)

Well good for cdog. I guess it’s tough cookie for a raped women though? I hope that a loved one of yours never has to make that decision.

People. This post is controversial enough without adding illegal immigration. Move along.

Rogue Roni,
I have a friend that used to be a rape counselor until the State of Illinois made the choice to not afford that for its residents.

It is never Pro-woman to put duct tape over anyone’s mouth.
Worse than simply “too clever by half.”

There is no hypocrisy meter in Springfield.
Which one is it Democrats?
