Madigan pot, meet Rauner kettle
Wednesday, May 10, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller * House Speaker Michael Madigan sat down for a 30-minute interview with WGN Radio’s Patti Vasquez yesterday. An excerpt…
There’s no doubt that Gov. Rauner relies heavily on polling. His people are in the field a lot. They won’t support reinstating a tax on food and beverages precisely because of that polling data (something like 75 percent of Illinoisans disapprove). * But this criticism of Rauner comes from a man who has always carefully positioned all of his more politically vulnerable members with poll-friendly legislation. He regularly forces multiple roll calls on bills designed to put Republicans in a bad political light. This is no poll-averse dude, by any means. Not to mention that Madigan’s House passed a permanent property tax freeze bill last year. And it wasn’t “targeted” at all. Why? Simple. It polls off the charts.

It was also a Rauner Requirement for a budget. But I’d bet the polls of local governments and schools would reflect a different outcome.

Governments don’t vote.

Seriously, is it even remotely possible that Madigan and Rauner could ever find a way to work together to get a budget done?
I feel like the answer has something to do with hell freezing over.

“Governments don’t vote.”
True, but the people who make up those governments do, and they need to make sure the people they represent realize both the potential positives and negatives of a permanent property tax freeze (for instance). It will be less State government “interference”, but potentially very much more local government burdens.
- Liberty - Wednesday, May 10, 17 @ 11:36 am:
Rauner will never agree to a tax increase.
- Skirmisher - Wednesday, May 10, 17 @ 11:38 am:
Those two clearly deserve one another. What demoralizes me is the suspicion that the voters of Illinois deserve them quite as much.

Jerry 101 ….NO and we all need to go buy Winter wear
- Truthteller - Wednesday, May 10, 17 @ 12:29 pm:
Five governors, three Republicans and two Democrats, were able to pass budgets with Madigan as Speaker. The evidence would suggest that Rauner is the main culprit here.

Funny how the most unpopular politician in Illinois (according to every poll) dismisses polls.

I laugh every time you say that. The Governor ain’t exactly loved. You’re a piece of work.
- Winnin' - Wednesday, May 10, 17 @ 1:13 pm:
Rauner is governor. Madigan is speaker.
Big difference.

Rauner 58% unfavorable
Madigan 61% unfavorable
That Rauner, 3 whole points.
To the Post,
You want my attention that isolates Madigan?
Have Rauner and Cullerton and Radogno send the Grand Bargain, then Rauner can really blame Madigan.
Until Rauner sends the Grand Comprmise… by allowing Raunerite votes to happen as cover for everyone, including Rauner, why any Raunerite takes solace in Madigan “here” is confusing to a want of a deal.
