Drury gets primary opponent

* I told subscribers about this several weeks ago…
Deerfield attorney Bob Morgan announced Thursday that he’s running as a Democrat for the Illinois House seat now held by State Rep. Scott Drury (D-Highwood). […]
“It’s been more than 700 days without a budget and it’s time for someone to stand up for the values of our community, make changes and begin fixing the problem,” said Morgan, a health care policy attorney.
Drury has claimed that he’s exploring a run for governor. He wouldn’t say whether he’d yet made up his mind.
* More…
“In a recent conversation with Bob Morgan, I was very disappointed to learn that he is open to voting for Mike Madigan to be the speaker of the House,” Drury said. “The last thing the 58th District needs is to go backwards.”
Morgan said he made no mention of Madigan during their brief conversation.
“I told him I would support a Democrat for speaker who shared my progressive values,” Morgan said.
Go read the rest.
…Adding… It’s not all listed online yet, but the Morgan campaign claims it has raised $30K so far and hopes to raise a total of $50K this quarter.

Drury provides too much comic relief to let go. That should be his campaign. “Send in the Clowns. Vote Drury.”

Did Drury do that kind of lying as a federal prosecutor?

Which means, good, bad, or indifferent, that he obviously will vote for Madigan.

Maybe he shouldn’t have announced he was exploring a run for Governor. Anytime someone says they’re leaving there are always people waiting in the wings to pounce.
Once someone gets in their mind their running sometimes it’s not so easy to take them off the ledge.
Drury should clarify whether he’s running or not. Then maybe this guy will back off?

In an odd parallel way, it reminds me of Tom Cross.
He kinda/sorta talked his way out of his leadership in the Caucus and “had” to run for Treasurer…
It was like a bad 10 days or so, leaving Cross like “what did I just do?!”
Drury kinda/sorta talked himself to getting a primary, well beyond is magnetic charm and winning personality, but I digress…

Drury’s always going to be Drury — a self-aggrandizing blowhard. But … he ain’t a Madigan pony like each and every one of his Dem colleagues.
Madigan, being Madigan, will do all that it takes to remove Drury from office. Because Madigan only cares about maintianing his power.

Like Ken Dunkin, Drury sides with Rauner, not even for the politics at play in his district, but to be an irritant, while being helpful to Rauner, purposely.
Drury looks to hurt Democrats, it’s his schtick.

Drury can be defeated with a progressive candidate who is well funded with a good GOTV plan. I won’t be surprised if Rauner makes an effort to fund Drury. I previously lived in Highwood and know that this district has a large number of very progressive voters. While this district has large numbers of conservative wealthy constituents, there is also a growing number of poor non voting constituents that Drury marginalizes by supporting Rauner policies. These persons can be registered to vote and most will align themselves with a good progressive candidate.

Morgan would be a huge improvement over Drury.
- Anonymous - Friday, Jun 2, 17 @ 11:18 am:
Whether Drury runs or not, Morgan will not be the democratic nominee. He is totally out of touch with the constituents in Highland Park and Deerfield. He has no relationships there and cannot raise money. Further, when people start digging into his government “work” he will be so damaged that it will be impossible for him to win. The media should start looking at his involvement in the Quinn hiring issues. FOIA any email he sent with a resume. Review all of his work on vetting candidates for appointments. He had his hands deeply in many of Wuinn’s biggest scandals.

Of course, Drury earned a primary opponent but it had nothing to do with his faux Gubernatorial candidacy. Drury’s wacky and arrogant Legislative behavior earned that primary, particularly his numerous shots, some petty some well deserved, at Madigan. Madigan and Madigan surrogates will attempt to spin it as Drury was intentionally helpful to Rauner, but that’s small stuff. Drury made Madigan his enemy because Drury directly attacked Madigan and willfully made a public act of his defiance. Good for Drury on substance but this primary is a spoil of his war.
- Primary Them ALL! - Friday, Jun 2, 17 @ 11:32 am:
How about this for a citizens protest? Let us citizens who care about our state run for the legislature in all our districts. They are all so implicated in failure, for following Rauner, Madigan, and the Dems for failing to have any messaging to call Rauner out. Why not protest by challenging every last one of them?
- 'Goose - Friday, Jun 2, 17 @ 11:36 am:
Good thing Morgan has no chance at beating Drury. However, if Scott does run for Governor, and Rotering doesn’t want this job, Morgan as the nominee would be problematic for the Dems. Quinn lost this RD by double digits in ‘14 and the Republicans would love to hang the Quinn noose around a guy with no general election name ID in an open RD 58.

“Let”? Go do it.

Didn’t the “pot czar” leave state government to represent cultivators and dispensaries? Doesn’t illinois have some prohibition against those conflicts or is our state that screwed up that it is allowed?

===Madigan and Madigan surrogates will attempt to spin it as Drury was intentionally helpful to Rauner, but that’s small stuff===
- Deft Wing -
You must be clueless to legislative actions.
Raunerites made sure Dems couldn’t get 71 numerous times for overrides, and at times “after Dunkin” Drury aided to purposely help Rauner in his decisions thereafter. Those are “small” things? Hmm.
- slow down - Friday, Jun 2, 17 @ 12:51 pm:
Drury will be fine. The vast majority of voters don’t follow the inside stuff that those of us on this board do.
I have a cousin in the district who is smart and generally politically informed and her view of Drury is entirely positive. His refusal to vote for Madigan may not be viewed favorably here but it is in Highland Park and Deerfield.
- Just Observing - Friday, Jun 2, 17 @ 1:10 pm:
=== there is also a growing number of poor non voting constituents that Drury marginalizes by supporting Rauner policies. ===
No there isn’t. There a very tiny number of poor constituents, and it’s certainly not growing.
- Just Observing - Friday, Jun 2, 17 @ 1:11 pm:
I agree with others, that provided Drury raises the money and works hard, it won’t be a cakewalk to beat him in a Dem primary.
- A guy - Friday, Jun 2, 17 @ 3:23 pm:
Compare Dunkin and Drury all you want. The comparison ends when comparing the districts. That’s up there in Rauner’s neck of the woods, unlike Kenny D’s district. A single sniff of Madigan deciding who their Rep is going to be (real or perceived) won’t go very far.
IMO, this comparison is foolish. Drury’s situation is a bit (a bit!) more akin to Jack Franks and nothing like Ken Dunkin.
- Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 2, 17 @ 3:38 pm:
===IMO, this comparison is foolish===
Nope.
Jack Frank’s cared about.. Jack Franks.
Dunkin and Drury are unlikable, and using that to aid Rauner and relishing their own “images” and impressions within the Caucus, no, Frank’s was about Franks… Drury and Dunkin are about sticking it to people to help Rauner beat Madigan.
Same
- A guy - Friday, Jun 2, 17 @ 3:45 pm:
Willy, I tried to be clear. Compare Drury and Dunkin all you want; don’t extend that to the districts they represent. They are far different in polar opposite ways.
And, Ken Dunkin was never a Federal Prosecutor, was he? lol (complete snark)
Drury and Franks share a tendency of being contrarians. I will grant you with no debate, that Jack is/was/always will be a much more likable person than either of the other two. But then again, who isn’t?
