So the Cubs are back in first place. Maybe they’ll decide to play a little better now.
The Cardinals have done from first to fourth in less than a week. Lol. Ouch. As a long suffering Cubs fan, I know how much that must sting.

Aww man… does that mean that I can’t say that people who disagree with me aren’t even human beings? Shucks. I was saving that one.

- Ron Burgundy - Wednesday, Jun 7, 17 @ 1:49 pm:
Matheny needs to go. His in-game management, particularly of the pen, is terrible and the much maligned OF defense from last year has actually gotten statistically worse. Nice guy, but he’s in over his head.
- Cubs in '16 - Wednesday, Jun 7, 17 @ 1:49 pm:
Cubs are in first and most of the lineup hasn’t starting hitting yet. Not to mention the starting pitching has been mediocre. I look for them to trade for a top tier starting pitcher and possibly a couple more bullpen arms before the deadline. The bats will heat up and the Cubs will cruise to another division championship in the weak Central.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 7, 17 @ 1:52 pm:
The Cubs need to look for better Catching. The guys behind the plate, not getting it done, day in, day out…

Probably good time for Rich to take a long, long weekend.

Another thing — the Cards’ baserunning and other fundamentals have been atrocious.

Here’s hoping the groomer isn’t a Raunerite or Oscar will be shaved bald instead of just a little off the top!

The White Sox rebuild has hit a snag. They’re not losing enough to get a high draft pick and their tradable assets (Frazier, Quintana, Cabrera, Robertson) are playing lousy.

We’re in the situation similar to last year around the all star break. Too many people are screaming that’s it’s the end of the world if the Cubs hit a slump but I’m ok with players slumping now as opposed to later in the season.

When Rich Miller says “be nice to each other”, that is NOT the dog whistle for a Cubs Discussion!
lol.
- wordslinger - Wednesday, Jun 7, 17 @ 2:30 pm:
Almora needs to play every day. Happ is not a center fielder. Schwarber needs to go down to Des Moines and find his stroke.
No shame in that. The kid still doesn’t have a full season in the bigs. But you can’t bat a buck sixty and be the worst defensive outfielder and stay with the big club. Nothing personal, just business.
Willie, what’s your beef with Contreras and Montero? I think catching is a strength.

Pew Charitable Trust figures that Illinois and Nevada are tied for last place in personal income growth since the Great Recession. Illinois is behind Mississippi.

There’s issues in Illinois?
- Chicago_Downstater - Wednesday, Jun 7, 17 @ 2:44 pm:
@OW & wordslinger
I tend to agree with wordslinger on the Cub’s men behind the plate.
Montero is doing great at the plate & I think he’s been pretty solid behind it as well. I mean he’s not an all star, but he gets the job done.
I can maybe see where OW is coming from with some of the routine plays the Contreras has flubbed–a particularly horrific dropped third strike throwing error comes to mind–but I chalk that up to the kid still learning to settle into the game. His arm is still a flipping rocket! His bat could use some improvement too this year, but he’ll heat up eventually.
To the Cards fans: #sorrynotsorry
To the Sox fans: Good luck with that rebuild. I’m hoping for a 1906 Fall Classic rematch in my lifetime.

===…what’s your beef with Contreras and Montero? I think catching is a strength.===
I think the routine plays that are not handled, and the handking of the pitching staff in real-time game on the field needs work. There seems to be a passed ball at an in opportune time, for example, like Chicago_Downstater - points out too.
Too erratic, for me.

You Cubs fans should be thankful we Cards fans took away the June swoon from you. And we started really early doing it. Bet there’s no September to remember down here.

Oh Susana!
Mendoza has a crush on former President Reagan! Who knew?
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 7, 17 @ 3:14 pm:
I guess I’d like to also see…
More walks, less strikeouts by Cubs hitters, both categories seemingly be going the wrong way this season.
More efficient starting pitching. Starters are running up pitch counts for strikeouts and not going deeper into games and getting themselves in more trouble. The 99 pitch count complete game by Lester was an absolute gem of an outing.
- jim - Wednesday, Jun 7, 17 @ 3:25 pm:
Great looking dog.
Cards have too many problems to blame Matheny. They’re just horrendous.
It’s easier to say what’s good than to list what’s bad.
Starting pitching is decent. Everything else is a problem. Offense, defense, base running, long and short relief. given some of the mistakes they make, I can sometimes hardly believe they’re professionals. Can’t fix this many problems.
Barring some sort of rebirth, season will be a disappointment. Cubs, on the other hand, are very good, but not as good as last year.

How shaggy are you, Rich? Do you need a haircut, too?

I had a haircut about a week ago.

Willy, you Cubs fans are spoiled! Cub hitters are third in baseball in drawing walks. White Sox are second from last.
Strikeouts are ruining baseball. In 1959, only five players struck out 100 or more times, and they were all big power hitters, including Hall-of-Famers like Mantle and Killebrew. Last season, 135 players struck out 100 or more times, including a bunch of no-name middle infielders who don’t hit for power. This is why games take too long.

===… you Cubs fans are spoiled!===
Point taken. lol. Sorry.
===Cub hitters are third in baseball in drawing walks===
I thought I read the Club was behind pace of last year. That’s my reference point.
Can’t agree more on “Ks”. There was a long discussion when Lester threw that gem how “Greg Maddux” that outing was, putting the ball into play, showing efficient and counting all outs the same; ground, fly, or strike.

Willy, you’re right. Cubs did finish first in walks last year, so they are heading in the wrong direction.

Oscar’s more worried about his public persona than his owner. lol Now he can be seen in public.
I heard other dogs saying their owners are getting lax on grooming regularity. They blamed Mendoza.

Perhaps Oscar the dog would be better to have in budget negotiations than the governor and speaker?
