Cullerton: “The Senate has done its work”
Tuesday, Jun 13, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller
* Press release…
As Illinois draws closer to entering a third year with no state budget, Illinois Senate President John J. Cullerton issued a statement reminding everyone that the Senate has actually passed a balanced budget. He urged Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Illinois House to take up and finish the work the Senate has done.
Statement from Illinois Senate President John J. Cullerton:
“I want to remind everyone that the Illinois Senate approved a balanced budget. Not just any budget, but the budget Governor Rauner introduced. We held spending to the exact level he wanted, kept the tax rate that he asked for, cut $3 billion in spending and ultimately eliminated the nearly $5 billion deficit in his proposed budget.
“The Senate has done its work. It’s up to Governor Rauner and the Illinois House to finish the job.
“Illinois has already gone two years without a budget, and Governor Rauner is dangerously close to extending that to three years. That is unacceptable. We need a bipartisan solution. With the May 31 deadline passed, it now requires Republican votes to get a balanced budget approved in the House. The governor needs to sit down with House Republicans, come to agreement on this balanced budget and then help make it the law.”
The SDems also included a breakdown of what their budget did. Click here for that.

===“The Senate has done its work. It’s up to Governor Rauner and the Illinois House to finish the job. …”===
Had Rauner allowed Leader Radogno to get either of the Two Grand Compromises… the incredible heat on Madigan would be painfully hot.
Then again, any discussion that Rauner wants a deal, and that discussion ignores Rauner refusing to work with Cullerton to triangulate Madigan is grossly disingenuous to the politics. Madigan didn’t double cross Cullerton or Radogno, Rauner did.
Good on Cullerton.
Rauner had his triangulation. Why did Rauner undercut Leader Radogno?

So in summary, the Senate did their job and the Governor’s job, since the Governor introduced an unbalanced budget.
They put on their big boy pants (or unisex pants), made some really hard decisions, and introduced a way to balance the budget.
Now we just need the Governor and House to act like grown ups…

So, I guess Rauner DID introduce a balanced budget. Thanks for the clarification, President Cullerton.

+++ - Birdseed - Tuesday, Jun 13, 17 @ 9:51 am: +++ You didn’t read the whole quote, did you? The part about the nearly $5 billion deficit?

Birdseed- maybe you should also read the very next sentence.

- Oswego Willy - +1
Rauner’s refusal to to accept Cullerton’s invitation to triangulate Madigan defies logic, proving he either doesn’t want a budget or has no idea what he’s doing.
Or maybe he’s become paranoid, like the scene in “Airplane!”: “No, it’s just what they’ll be expecting us to do.”

A Raunerite manipulating quotes to fit an agenda? No way! /s
To the post: glad to see Cullerton getting some actual facts into the discussion. Maybe people should actually look at what they passed as opposed to just the blatant disinformation put out by the ILGOP mouth breathers.
- Mama - Tuesday, Jun 13, 17 @ 12:51 pm:
Why has Rauner undercut every budget since he has been in office by continuous moving the goal post after an agreement was reached?
Why does he continuously keep the Republicans from voting on the budgets?

===Why has Rauner… Why does he===

- Mama - Tuesday, Jun 13, 17 @ 12:53 pm:
It appears Rauner does not want to pass a budget. Does anyone know why?
- Annoin' - Tuesday, Jun 13, 17 @ 1:14 pm:
But if the House acted they would be cheatin’ all those Senate GOPies out of a chance to be part of the solution. Why would Durkie have all his magoos vote when no Senate GOPies? hardly seems fair. Maybe House members will call it a “Chicago Bailout” and refuse to go along?
- Michelle Flaherty - Tuesday, Jun 13, 17 @ 1:24 pm:
Annonin’, This is Durkie’s big chance to show he’s a leader. I mean, he’s a full-fledged minority leader. Now with 51 members, he’s got real responsibilities. No more super-minority leader coasting. Is he up to the challenge?
- WWGD - Tuesday, Jun 13, 17 @ 3:27 pm:
Man sign that budget. We all see what your doing. Not a Cool move.
- Anon221 - Tuesday, Jun 13, 17 @ 5:39 pm:
The Senate Republucans also cornered the House Republicans once the ILGOP started the attacks on the Senate budget and those that voted for it. And, by targeting House Dems to drop support of the budget deal, Madigan only had 42 votes. So, really not surprised of the hold up. This is the only way to get Republican votes on the needed revenues. Not only did Rauner not corner Madigan, he cornered the party he supposedly leads. Not that he cares, and therein lies the kernel of truth All Republican members of the GA should consider. Kansas did. So should Illinois.
- Last Bull Moose - Tuesday, Jun 13, 17 @ 5:46 pm:
I applaud the Senate for passing a budget that is balanced, or seems to be with mutually agreed curves.
Now the Senate needs to play hardball until Rauner submits his balanced budget. No positions confirmed. No side issues moved forward
- Anon221 - Tuesday, Jun 13, 17 @ 5:48 pm:
Last Bull Moose- just keep in mind, only part of the Senate, in the end, had the fortitude to pass what needed to be done. If we get into an override situation, will others show the same fortitude, or be content with inaction?
